While walking up the north end of India Street, you might be a little more concerned about having a flashlight and/or pepper spray than enjoying a stiff drink and organic cuisine. Luckily, there is a little place called Starlite, where you can slip out of the dark and into the, well, a little less dark. This cavernous delight opened in 2007 and has since been a Mission Hills go-to joint; just minutes away from Downtown San Diego.

The newest addition to the El Camino family, Super El Camino, in the former Airport Lounge venue in Little Italy, provides a breath of fresh air, and ignites the sky with its bright pink neon lights, to wake up Little Italy’s somewhat sleepy nightlife.

The interior -designed by co-owner Mauricio Courturier (who also designed Voyeur and most recently, Noble Experiment)-is vibrant, quirky, and at times, simply brilliant.

DJ Craig Smoove has always been one of my favorite DJs in San Diego. From the first time I ever heard Craig Smoove spin at Thrusters Lounge, I knew he and I were on the same aural wavelength. What impresses me about Craig is the ease at which filthy electro oozes out of his finger tips — whether the crowd is ready for it or not. I like people who are bold enough to shake things up a bit – and sure enough over time, Craig Smoove began to open minds in the scene that is often resilient to change.

Off the busy main stretch through Hillcrest, Jake’s on 6th has an innate sense of warmth and graciousness. This family owned and operated space provides a setting that is intentionally romantic- with candles and dim lighting throughout. However, the layout creates a vibe that makes this wine bar very open and convivial as well.
