Live Wednesday Benefit Hosted By Seth Combs @ U31 Bar
A disappointing yet realistic matter of fact: Music may be the universal language of mankind, but it’s only as powerful as it is heard. And when silenced by monetary restraints, music, even at its’ most extraordinary degree, is unable to fulfill its’ intrinsic purpose to inspire and uplift — if it isn’t heard.
The line-up scheduled for the evening is not only very impressive already, but it’s also steadily growing by the day! Those performers confirmed so far include:
KEEP IN MIND: In consideration for those 9-5ers, the performances will be begin at 8:00pm and the show will wrap-up well before last call… Get to U31 early so you don’t miss any of the performances.
A small donation of $5 at the door will be your ticket to join in this intimate evening celebrating the sounds of our local musicians; and supporting the dreams of a new one soon to come.

Situated in the heart of South Park,Alchemy Restaurant strives to attune itself to the same beat of its eclectic and ever-diversifying neighborhood. Hyper-consciousness to culinary trends, uncompromisable support for locally-sourced ingredients, and an insatiable need to constantly evolve as a whole, intrinsically, Alchemy itself, is reciprocal to South Park’s multifaceted, forward-thinking mentality. I have to say, I went to FIREHOUSE yesterday thinking I knew what to expect from DJs Frankie M and Turbo Teen — because I had heard each of them spin at least 100x before.
However, I entered the rooftop in utter shock when I heard what Frankie M was dropping behind the decks: Unlike her usual ambient lounge house music set, Frankie M was busting out serious Wolfgang Gartner bangers and mixing in some disco-minded dance tracks. Coming from a girl I swear I’ve heard say “I like sexy house music that makes people take their clothes off, not electro music” in the past, this was one seriously swift shift into a new sound realm – and she’s certainly took to the transition very well.
ThenTurbo Teen stepped up to the decks and started banging out some seriously technical breaks. From upbeat corrido to heavy electro to tropical tech (my favorite electronic genre of the moment) the boys of Turbo Teen weren’t hesitant to drop absolutely stomping bombs on the dance floor. I’m almost embarrassed to admit I starred at their hands as they worked the decks for about 20 minutes straight; constantly mixing, tweeking, manipulating each track – I literally caught myself jaw-dropped several times I was so impressed by their mastering skills. These guys are seriously nonstop; obviously truly passionate, talented technicians for electronic sounds. (more…)

You COULD get a latte on your lunch break — or, you could take a trip back in time, back when you didn’t have to file taxes or do laundry, and all the world was a glitter-dusted wonderland. That’s right, we’re talking about cupcakes. What better nostalgic treat than a pink-frosted, spongy bit of cake? Then again, what we really liked about Cups— La Jolla’sbrand-new, green-friendly cupcake “lounge” — was that it didn’t feel like a four-year-old’s birthday party. In fact, it was a rather sophisticated joint, with sleek lines, leather benches and glossy surfaces. The lights were even dimmed to a cool glow (we found out later that this was, in fact, an effort to conserve energy), and the girls behind the counter-top wore “uniforms” that were more like band t-shirts.
Initially, we wanted to hate on Cups for the overt hip factor: But the names of the cupcakes alone were enough to win our hearts over: (more…)
Although the Bloody Beetroots w/All Leather, Shark Attack, and Deth Hertz show is sold out, there are still plenty of opportunities to get into some mischief! If you’re in the mood for getting 10 types of weird, follow the neon tornado into Gaslamp land or lurk into the darkness of East Village for a bass-driven electropica that will do a serious number to your dignity in any case. Events going down tonight are all-over the San Diego board! Some pop acoustic and TJ-tronic-tech in Little Italy, repping Riverside in the Gaslamp, Dog-lovers uniting over $5 cocktails in East Village, and burning down discos in North Park, you won’t have any trouble finding something awesome going down around town tonight! It’s choosing among this eclectic assortment of happenings that will be most difficult. Our advice? Mix things up! Do something different tonight–there’s not ONE definitive event going down, poke around town a little and intermingle between the “scenes”. It’s Thursday night, why not spice things up a bit?
Be safe, have fun, and keep it muy espicy Mixsters!(more…)
The masked, Italian DJ duo The Bloody Beetroots will be paying San Diego another visit this Friday night — unleashing another round of unrelenting, grinding electro-bangers that will show little remorse for souls not prepared for a head-ful of mind-numbing bass and heavily-distorted synthesized lasers wailing down on your eardrums.
