One of our absolute favorites here at TheMixster.com, SWITCH, is coming to our hometown nightclub Voyeur this upcoming Thursday, February 3rd, and damn are we are amped!! Most known for his works alongside DIPLO as MAJOR LAZER, and infamous collaborations with M.I.A., he has been on the constant frontier of pioneering sounds for over half of the last decade. He’s notably played a humongous part in spreading Fidget and Dutch House across the Americas, always seemingly ahead of the common party-goers’ ear. He interestingly enough saturated the bloghouse era in its early years, as far back as 2004, with releases that were well beyond their time. He’s shown the true way to break the mold and sustain longevity as an artist by looking forward and staying in front of all the copycats; demonstrating what it takes to be unique and to make music for the future.

We were fortunate enough to be at Voyeur last July when he played and we captured some amazing footage for you to view. Check him out below, and download some of his remixes he’s done over the years. This is most definitely a show you do not want to miss. ENJOY!

RSVP for 2/03 at Voyeur Now!

The man behind the country-wide EDM phenomenon HARD FEST, featuring some of the most epic line-ups across the globe, will be touching base and throwing down his own epic set at SPIN Nightclub on February 4th, 2011!!

Gary “DESTRUCTO” Richards began DJing in the early 90s in LA’s underground dance music scene quickly gaining the attention of fans and industry taste-makers alike. And although he launched his success with Def American Recordings and later carried over to the metal world with No Name MGMT, it was in 2007 that Destructo determined it was time to return to his roots – and instigate an EDM revolution by creating HARD. And the rest is all history. Today we in the electronic dance sphere recognize HARD events as some of the most MASSIVE and wildly attended ground-breaking parties in the country: guaranteeing fully-loaded line-ups teeming with multiple headliners, mind-blowing production, and unforgettable experiences.

Taking a break from being the mastermind behind the fantasy and all-out party-concocting productions of his own HARD events, Destructo will be back in the limelight and behind the decks at San Diego’s own SPIN Nightclub, to launch a full-frontal aural assault onto the masses and into the wee hours of the night, as SPIN is always open til 4am (and sometimes, beyond…)!!!!

Every once in awhile we need a boost. A push forward. A slap on the ass to get things done and launch our minds into the creative plane.  THE BLEND is designed to arouse and inspire the magic forces at work, set ideas in motion, and get the juices flowing in what I like to call CREATIVE HYPE.  The term can be easily defined as the ‘state of invention’. No matter what you do on the day-to-day grind, tapping into this beautiful way of thinking will bring motivation and enlightenment to all your activities.

I’ve got five ingredients, fresh and ready to stimulate your senses and pave the way for a creative day.  Some music, some visual art, and some fashion for a proper appearance. Just one suggestion… Don’t let these things cut back your productivity. They have an enchanting way of gripping your attention and make the day pass by in haste…

RINSE.FM

Pirate radio has never been fresher. RINSE.FM has been on the forefront of electronic music for 16 years and climbing, and they just received their official broadcasting license at the tail end of 2010.  Beyond that, they’ve been on my personal listen list daily since my teens. Some of the world’s top artists in House, DubstepFuture BassFunky (you name it) have graced the airwaves of this once illegal broadcast. You can view all the artists and their weekly shows, with podcast installments fully downloadable on the site. If you aren’t already familiar with this monster of a radio station, it is about time you get well-acquainted.

San Diego’s very own Victor Ramos aka Harvard Bass has had a helluva week: with drops including his reflip of Dirty Bird Records‘, WORTHY‘s Big Perm, and another just this morning off Boys Noize Records on the label’s latest Super Acid compilation release [Buy Release Here]. But this week also marks the release of Harvard BassPruno EP, off Teenage Riot Records, featuring the massive title track along with another original Onurp, with remixes by Style of Eye and Cosmic Kids.

PRUNO is so absolutely on-point, from start to finish. I can barely sit still in chair long enough to write this and certainly not without bouncing to this dope new drop. Cranking electro, a steady minimal bass-line, and slicing filthy tech riffs and of course that generous serving of saucy bass goodness we’ve come to expect from Mr. Ramos, I cannot fuck wait to devour this track’s aural goodness inside the clubs tonight. Straight to the dance floor baby bay.

Style of Eye’s reflip of PRUNO draws in a noisy, industrial build, shifty minimalism and howling kicks that shape-out and absolutely fill every last little crevice in the room.

ONURP kicks off to a salacious start and builds with deep-pulsating wobbles and simple yet intriguing percussion that amasses to an intensely layered and capriciously-shifting tech house drive. It is full-on mesmerizing, like that feeling you get walking out of the club at dawn, rubbing your eyes with disbelief at the reality that surrounds you…

Cosmic Kids’ remix of ONURP implements a fuller, spacey-approach, bass-ier reverberations, and even some pitchy synth lines for good measure.

Also here’s that drop off Boys Noize Records as well, because it’s definitely worthy of mention and of inclusion into your iTunes, by way of Beatport of course. Or of course as always, for your full streaming pleasure for you below as well.

Kentucky-born Caleb Cornett, better known as AMTRAC, is lacing up the arena of feel-good House, with disco flavor and wobble goodness.  This 23-year old already has a few EPs under his belt, progressing more and more towards a dance floor frenzy sound through each release.  He just dropped his “EMERGENCY” EP (Download at the link!) mid-January, and the only emergency that comes to mind while listening to this — is not being in a situation where you can jump out of your seat and dance! Absolutely relaxing and fresh on the ears. It’s great to see his variety from other recent wobbly works of his like “Work The Gun” and his remix of M.I.A.‘s “XXXO“.  2011 should be a big year for this young gent… He’s definitely on the path to something special.  ENJOY!

Big props to Kaiserslauten, Germany’s astounding producer Zedd: who, almost seemingly overnight, has made a name for himself in the Electro arena. Zedd is on his way to quickly becoming a household name, after receiving well-deserved recognition after he dropped a stunning remix of Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”! His front-runner mentality on the progressive cross-over style is flooding the gates of the EDM masses at the moment.

Zedd seems comfortable now that he has a slew of solid remixes on shoulders, which were heavy enough to keep him grounded long enough to sit down and produce his first single. Zedd is officially unleashing his first original entitled “The Anthem”. As the picture above depicts, he has no problems with throwing fireballs in the club, but still he didn’t come to the fight alone. He assembled a team that will be sure to make your jaws drop, your knees shake, and the room quake! I grabbed my premiere favorite remix for a listen by Jay Robinson!

THE SQUATTERS are frontiering the modern state of 4-to-floor freshness. The British duo, consisting of Oliver Portamento and Alex Powell have been working with each other extensively over the years in everything from event promotions to their obvious crowd-crushing antics.  There likability, hard work, and connective nature eventually led them to the ears of Radio 1′s KISSY SELL OUT, who quickly signed them on his San City High Label and brought them along on tour in 2010. It’s easy to claim the rest after that, is history.

As far as their sound goes, it’s a forward blend of House, Dutch, and Electro, sitting amidst dreamy atmospheres and bottled up basslines. It’s definitely revitalizing to hear a proper twist on these genres which are losing some of their momentum these days due to a lack of fresh-thinking on a big picture scale. Lucky for us, there are duos like The Squatters amongst many other club pioneers who keep the sounds pressing in the right direction.

It was quite the nice midweek present to come across The Squatters recent remix of SHINICHI OSAWA‘s “Love Will Guide You” this morning. As stated on their Soundcloud page, it is their first remix of 2011 and it is fucken awesome. Enjoy that, and also an additional work of theirs below. Thanks to them I’ve been sitting on a cloud all day long…

Mon-Sun: 5pm-1am
Opening for Lunch: February 3rd!
I am always delighted when something new opens up in my neighborhood; but most especially when it’s a place that I have East Village has been desperately needing all along. (READ: SUSHI!!!!)
Thus I am so pleased to announce that The Dragon’s Den, directly across from Petco Park in East Village, is now open and is ready to serve the neighborhood! *Yay*

East Village, San Diego is a bustlin’ sphere of post-grad students, self-made entrepreneurs, fashionistas, media people, and dog-friendly urbanites. The neighborhood establishments that have survived the test of time or rather the Padres “off-season” are the ones that have never failed to provide excellent services and to fulfill the needs of the surrounding community. And while stellar establishments such as Cafe Chloe, BASIC urbn Kitchen, Cowboy Star, Neighborhood, etc. have continually provided top-notch service and outstanding quality products to residents in the area, East Village has long needed a place like The Dragon’s Den: A neighborhood bar and lounge, with a healthy Asian Fusion cuisine AND sushi bar that provides an urbané downtown experience but with a much-needed cozy feel.

The Dragon’s Den
meets all the necessary demands of its neighborhood:
*An über chic dog-friendly outside patio? Check.
*A FULL-bar plastered with a generous number of plasma-screen TVs to watch the game? Check.
*A borderline-obsessive assortment of organic beers and organic liquors? Check.
*A separated family dining room for quiet diners, away from the socialite/sports-fan crowd? Check.
*And, DUMPLINGS?!?!? Um, holy YUM!! Double Check!

The Dragon Den’s menu boasts not only an extensive number of Asian-fusion offerings, but they also have a FULL-sushi bar menu as well. Eager as always to try out new spots in my ‘hood, I have already experienced a number of “the Den’s” various dishes, as well as the incredibly fresh fish that is being served at The Dragon’s Den… and so far, it’s all pretty outstanding. It wouldn’t be fair to judge a place well before it’s scheduled *official* grand-opening, which is set for March 3rd, 2011, so I won’t be critiquing the food yet. However, here’s a sneak peek at what you can look forward to at The Dragon’s Den (and likely my new neighborhood hang):

~Open for Lunch (Starting February 3rd, 2010)
~A unique happy hour (that we’ve been told involves a timer and has *never* been done before…)
~Open late for dining and open ’til 1am every night for lounging and socializing.

Menu:
The long list of dumpling dishes greet diners first and foremost: And while there are plenty of interesting options including the Crispy Beef Curry Dumplings ($6) and the Diced Shrimp and Chive Dumplings ($6), the most appealing option seems to be the Dragon’s Den Dumpling Sampler ($8) which includes a pair of each dumpling including: Chicken Gyoza* (my personal fav), Shrimp and Pork Wonton, Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai, and Shrimp Ha Gau.

There are a variety of “small bites” offerings, including the Panko-Crusted Shrimp with Lemongrass Dipping Sauce ($5) and the Spicy Salt & Pepper Calamari ($7) that stand-out to me personally, and veggie-friendly bites such as the Green Onion Pancake ($4), Tangy Cucumber Salad ($5), and the Tofu Lettuce Wraps ($6) seem like perfectly heart-healthy and delicious options as well.

Traditional homemade soups such as the Southern-Style Homemade Pork & Shrimp Wonton Soup ($4/$8) are served in either a cup or a bowl, and an additional list of larger-portioned appetizers including the Dragon Balls ($7) and the Spicy Scallop-Stuffed Tomato ($11) are all fine choices for a tantalizing start to your meal or simply as a nice pair with a round of Dragon Den’s Signature Cocktails.

The Sushi menu offers a wide variety of your traditional offerings, as well as a few unique items — all at very competitive prices: All hand rolls including my favorite, the Scallop Hand Roll ($5) are all five dollars, while their combination platter of fresh Sashimi, will only set you back fifteen dollars: which is a pretty good deal for a Downtown-locale. The Dragon Den’s Roll ($14), a Shrimp tempura roll topped with Spicy Tuna, seems to be the outstanding house favorite and is highly recommended by the staff.

For larger or Family-Style entree dishes, Dragon’s Den offers a number of Noodle dishes including the Spicy Three-Ingredient Lo-Mein ($12) – which I thought was outstanding – and full dishes such as the Honey-Glazed Shrimp ($15), Cashew Chicken with Plum Sauce ($12), Spicy Cumin Lamb ($13), and Mongolian Stir-fried Beef or Lamb with Scallions ($13) will likely be the crowd-pleasing favorites. There are also vegetarian Family-style offerings such as the Spicy Eggplant in Garlic Sauce($10) and the Family-Style Tofu ($10).

For those who have an insatiable sweet-tooth (like mine), I am certain the Toffee Apple with Vanilla Ice Cream ($6) would be an unbelievable ending to any meal, or surely satisfy any late-night sugar cravings.

Although The Dragon’s Den has been open to the public for less than 24 hours, I have no doubt that this place will soon be East Village’s new *it* spot; And that the staff will know my name by the end of this week.
