Attempting to describe Brooklyn-based Brenmar is a little bit like trying to relate sex to a virgin. For all the textbook descriptions, analogies, and easy answers, nothing except an up-close and personal encounter encapsulates one’s first eargasm with Brenmar. For those unfamiliar, the time has come to immediately get intimate with this panty-dropping beat maker.
Sick off the intense dopamine drips of “Want Me”, as featured on his EP ‘Let Me Know (Tasting)’, the first time Brenmar beamed through my car speakers, pulling curbside off the road was necessary to absorb the intricate layers spliced into each beat.
Brenmar – Want Me* by onmygrizzly
Soon after, serious Soundcloud stalking commenced and hasn’t stopped since. Brenmar brings a fresh breath to house with choppy synth edits, handclaps, and nasty vocals that vibe classic old-school, yet pair viciously with slick bassline beats.
As Brenmar remains prolific with a constant production of tracks that are each a perfect ten, the countdown to Brenmar’s newest EP, Let’s Pretend, to be released on October 31 began long ago. Thanks to a preview compilation from Hum+Buzz the label on which this EP will be released, hype for the sample of a wholly hypnotic fusion of hip-hop and sexily sonic house rhythms could keep one high for days.
Let’s Pretend (New Single!! Out Oct. 31st!!!) by BRENMAR
For a total body experience, bump the below video of new release, “Temperature Rising” and try not groove on the smooth freaky downbeats and zombiesque hook. The percussive track streams synths that are straight sparkle motion. As a bonus, Brenmar sets up a visual buffet of circle dancers from back in the day should your dance moves feel stale. Eye-candy connoisseurs dial into minute 2:30 for the lady rocking olive khaki mom shorts and a black stretch bow as a shirt. With the release dropping on Halloween, those with the urge to pay personal homage to this goodness via a complete 90’s wardrobe feel free.
For providing the perfect soundtrack to party ones shoulder-padded-self-stupid, we salute you sir Brenmar.

Yo so there’s a few mid tempo stand-outs making pings and siren noises on our moombah radar this week worthy of highlight to the masses.
David Heartbreak and the homie JWLS. Collabo mode on the same mothafucking track. Panties around my ankles at the very thought. And that’s before you even hear the teaser.

Dillon Francis, in typical Dillon Francis fashion, released a LOLable teaser for his new single, IDGAF…OS, directed by Stephen Vasquez, who we all fondly know as the director of The Electro Wars and as 1/2 of NYC’s Sazon Booya.
His new single is spunky. Crunchy and tough, yet undeniably cute & bouncy all at the same time. It feels like as close to 2008 indie electro as it could be before we shake our heads, blink away that nostalgic blur and realize that this indeed is the moombahton we have come to love. Shaken up a bit and disguised in a leather jacket and twinkly noises.
I.D.G.A.F.O.S. – Dillon Francis by DILLONFRANCIS
ALL HAIL EL REY MUNCHI!!!
This isn’t moombahton. At least not your traditional interpretation of moombahton. But it IS certainly worthy of your immediate attention. Munchi & Nadastrom have come together for the first time eva and the result of their collaboration bores what I can only imagine will be the first of a raging kick drum onslaught of D&B-minded moombahton to come in the near future.
Nadastrom/Munchi/Jen Lasher – Say My Name by Munchi
I closely follow each and every one of Javier Estrada’s steps as his Cumbia-minded approach to all sub-genres of moombahton just sits real well with me. His innovative approach to infusing traditional Mexi baile into even heavier pick-ups of searing moombahcore bangers is skillfully executed. And while plenty of artists have taken the “BANGERZ ONLY” route while coursing through their own respective aural adventures through the moombahton genre, Estrada has been quite noble for maintaining those true to form Latin-centric sounds. And while his latest is as cutty moombahcore as you can possibly process at 110 BPMs, he keeps it clean and Cumbia where it feels o so right – true Estrada-style.
Policarpo Calles – Mi Vallenata (Javier Estrada Remix)
I don’t know M U C H about E R A K except that every time he updates his Soundcloud I kinda do this really awkward giddy clap thing I don’t really want to go into great detail about.

If rapper/internet sensation Iggy Azalea hadn’t already caught everyones attention with her bangin’ looks and raw spits, the homies at Rot10 Musik, Kid Cedek, Mr. Vega, and ETC!ETC! have together re-flipped her LP Ignorant Art enough to spread her name to a wider crowd. Using everything from juke, to dubstep, the moombahcore, and even a bit of rock, this rework was done simply for their passion of making music, and their love of the artist. Working alone, as trios, and adding rough cut goodies like Otis Clapp and Stranger Day, the entire album’s got me goosbumpin’ and my eardrums throbbing. Dame mas!

Put on your dancing shoes for this one! Never exhausting his name enough, and fiending for his music like a crackhead, ETC!ETC! never fails to win over the masses. Pleasing us yet again with his finesse, his new remix of Black Tongues “Ritmosura” will send you into a footwork frenzi with its perfect blend between a salsa drum beat, and tropical moombah flavor!

Why must they tease us with only snippets? Not holding back on these bouncy tracks, and epic builds, tropical bass house/moombah duo Market Price are tag teaming with Will Bailey to create an array of sounds that will make you jump in the air and drop your ass to the floor! Fulfilling love of both genres, I cannot wait till both these tunes drop (one on monster DIM MAK Records).

Accentuating the sexiness of moombah even more, Jonny Chino’s remix of “Excuse Me Miss” is both salty and sweet, and steady groovin’.

Teen Wolf recently tore through SD last weekend, and brought the hip shakin’ rukus! NOT A SURPRISE. Collabing with Shelco Garcia (btw, oh yessss, watch out for this guy!), these two dudes are unmerciful when it comes to bangin’ out the tracks. An original with a weird-in-a-good-way vibe that jumps from borderline sad to banging, and an added bonus remix of Mixster obsession, Diplo, will have me coming back for seconds. NOM NOM!

Rampage & Nader, have come together to drop club-ready bombs that are sending sonic booms far past Chicago lines. Originally springing from the disco/house side of the tracks, their stroll through moombah pastures have proven quite intoxicating. Frequently giving out tracks for free (so take a gander at their soundcloud), these two tracks are minor examples of their easy listening moombah that’s creeps up into bangers. Check out their take on infamous Torro Torro track “Country Club”.

San Francisco’s annual Treasure Island Music Festival saw no shortage of funky basslines, festival babes, garlic fries, and intermittent sunshine this past weekend. The Saturday roster of this Bay Area treasure bucked the growing trend of DJ-heavy lineups in favor of the finest electronic live acts for its fifth year running. While I had caught most of the bigger names at this year’s Coachella, anyone who couldn’t get their hands on a ticket to the April festival could get easily get their fix with Empire of the Sun, the recently-reformed Death From Above 1979, Cut Copy, and Chromeo.
Free shuttles. Treasure Island itself isn’t easy to get to, but whether you took a $2 public transit ride, biked, or drove and parked for free at AT&T Park, the shuttles running between the ballpark and the festival were fast and frequent. And these weren’t the retired party buses like you took back in college, but coaches complete with plush seats and drop-down televisions. With careful planning, I never had to wait more than five minutes to catch a ride.
—
Free-range alcohol. Gone are the beer gardens that trap you inside a chain-link fence while your favorite acts perform. Unlike Coachella and HARD, at TIMF (and its bigger sister, Outside Lands) not only let you take your booze anywhere you’d like, they also serve a wide variety of beer, wine, and even liquor. A good-sized beer will still set you back $9, but that seems to be the standard at music festivals everywhere.
—
Plenty of port-a-potties. Because missing your favorite band while you wait in line to pee is definitely one of my least favorite festival experiences. Again, I never waited more than five minutes to use the bathroom, earning TIMF some serious points in my book.
—
Geographer. Think electro Grizzly Bear without the drowsiness. Kicking things off on the larger Bridge Stage, this San Francisco-based trio brought a sizable crowd early to the festivities. Mike Deni’s dreamy vocals paired well with the electric cello of Nathan Blaz as they played fan favorites like “Paris” and “Verona”, as well as some new songs that went over well with the crowd. If you haven’t heard of Geographer, I highly suggest you check them out via facebook.
—
YACHT. As the afternoon finally warmed up, YACHT took the Tunnel Stage set against the skyline of San Francisco in the background. Their midtempo disco sound brought the energy back to the festival flagged by a disappointing showing from Shabazz Palaces. A crowd of rabid dancers and inflatable shark-wielding altbros formed as YACHT, backed by The Straight Gaze, played a mix of older tunes like “Psychic City” and new ones from their album Shangri-La like “Dystopia.” Unfortunately, I missed seeing YACHT at Coachella, but their appearance at TIMF lived up to my expectations.
—
Battles. Perhaps it was The Naked and Famous’ silly name that turned me off from watching them perform. Instead, I secured a spot close to the Tunnel Stage to prepare for Battles, a band I had never heard of prior to the festival. It turns out that Battles was formed by Ian Williams, guitarist of one of my favorite bands in high school, Don Caballero. Amidst a sea of dancey electronic fare, Battles’ irregular time signatures and experimental sample-layering really stood out on Saturday. With no expectations to begin, it’s safe to say that their performance really blew me away.
—
Dizzee Rascal. Winner of the most hands in the air and the most electrifying performance of Saturday. If you were itching for a banging DJ set throughout the day, Dizzee’s hotly-anticipated appearance hit the spot as he rhymed over hits like “Dance Wiv Me” and “Heavy.” Whether you like to rave out to electro and dubstep or prefer his more traditional grime roots, Dizzee offered just about something for everyone. Bonus: not only did his DJ know how to scratch, but tastefully so.
—
Cut Copy. In all fairness, Chromeo, Empire of the Sun, and Cut Copy all played well as ever on Saturday, but it was Cut Copy who managed to enchant me once again as the crowd rushed the Bridge Stage to see them live. Dan Whitford’s legendary voice filled the evening air as Cut Copy took anyone over who was willing. Describing the magic of a Cut Copy performance (and without sounding cheesy) is a challenging task as a writer, but even the most casual fan of theirs would understand what I mean. Though most of their setlist consisted of songs from In Ghost Colours and Zonoscope, I was delighted to hear them play from “Pharaohs and Pyramids” right into “Saturdays,” one of my favorites from Bright Like Neon Love.
—
Honorable mention: Buraka Som Sistema. Admittedly, anything flavored with tropical bass isn’t my cup of tea, but I have to give it to BSS for following up Dizzee Rascal with the same unbridled energy and madness. Typically, an MC will squash a decent DJ set for me (see: Nero at Hard Summer this year) so when not one, but three showed up onstage, I couldn’t help but cringe. Little did I know, this trio would add instead of subtract from the show, and by the end of their set, there were about 15 chicks crammed onto the smaller Tunnel Stage. Buraka Som Sistema was definitely a worthy addition to Saturday’s lineup.

The mighty clan of bass battlers behind SUBversive will be passing out some tasty pre-Halloween treats at Kava Lounge packed to the brim with pure West Coast filth: none of that fake ish. Sugarpill, reigning over LA, will be trafficking that 100% uncut shhmexy grime down to San Diego on Oct. 29th for one the year’s wildest, face-melting extravaganzas.
Hi… My name is Saro and I am a Sugarpill addict. I get super stoked when I see shows like this get booked, because it reassures me that people out there still truly appreciate good music and talented producers. For a while, Sugarpill has been dropping bombs on the underground scene, packing bass and glitch into every punch; but, rightfully so. Sugarpill, aka Evan has been emerging onto the larger scene—playing massive sets at Coachella and Burning Man in 2011. To see this guy for a pre-sale ticket price of $10 is complete insanity. And get this…If you get SUBversive’s 4 ticket package, the price break gets you or one of your friends in for FREE!
Watch this clip of him slaying this year’s Coachella crowd inside the DO LAB and then try to tell me you don’t want to go.
I’ve put together a sampler platter so that you can bounce into Kava Lounge ready to handle Sugarpill’s straight gangsta suave.
Sugarpill – Malefic Planet (feat. ChrisB.)
The Weeknd – Wicked Games (Sugarpill’s Slippery Souldbass Remix)
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s- Maps (Sugarpill’s TehSlideBass Remix)
SUGARPILL will also be joined by SUBversive resident selectas indaskyes, Facemelter, Wicked Styles, and Mastah Syphe who be dropping a prime array of heavy-rearing dubstep, glitch, and moombahton all night long.

New Dillon Francis video, shot by Stephen Vasquez. Director of The Electro Wars. 1/2 of Sazon Booya.
Dope new single. Killer video footage. One incredibly unsettling hair thing going on… I wanna say it’s just hat hair, but it might be a toupee… I really can’t figure it out and it’s kinda blowing my mind right now.
First Porter Robinson, now Comic Strips. It seems that 19 year old producers are all the rage these days. Even though I hate to see people my age that are more successful than I’ll ever be, I can’t stay mad when I listen to Comic Strips‘ new EP, Party Zone. This young Pittsburg native has only been on the scene for about a year, but in that short span of time has already gathered a strong following through his edgy electro style. You may have already heard of Comic Strips‘ remix of RuffNeck which climbed to the coveted top 10 of the Hype Machine. Keep an eye out for this guy, he’s gonna be blowing up bigger than a porta-potty at a chili eating contest.
Party Zone kicks it off with some dirty disco and then swan dives into a funky electro mosh pit of excellence. I feel like this track was made specifically to please my ear drums. Comic Strips mixes the genre of EDM that has most recently piqued my interest, disco funk, with my long time favorite genre, electro. I love this track so much that I’ll do something I haven’t done in years: pay… for music online.
Comic Strips – Party Zone by COMIC STRIPS
TurboViolet (I guess the name “ultraviolet” was taken) is an electro house track with some kick. Although I’m not as enthusiastic about this song as Party Zone, I dig the first half because of the raw wobbles Comic Strips uses. The song falls a little flat for me during the breakdown because progressive house just isn’t my thing. I guess it’s hard to follow up after a track that I like as much as Party Zone.

Bonus: Here is the Skrillex remix that Comic Strips completely murdered a few months ago!

The best holiday of the year is rapidly approaching. It’s the time of the year to dress up like an idiot (I’ll be rocking the giant hotdog), an unholy hell spawn, or a prostitute. We’re created a list of the best parties and shows in SD to hit up this most memorable weekend of debauchery. You’d better start preparing now: work on your cardio, get the kinks out of your new dance moves, and toughen up that liver. We’re getting all sorts crazy!
FRIDAY// October 28th
I’ve never been so STOKED to see Deadmau5 as I am now. His new stage scrambles the brains of all those whom it encounters. I WANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! Yadderamean?! The psychedelic time machine operated by a mouse…[excuse me] Mau5…takes a life of its own as it walks you down shroomy-lane. How often does a musical mastermind and mind-blowing spectacle come in this sort of package?
OH! And I almost forgot…Freaking FEED ME of Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label will be dropping F(ilth) bombs on Petco Park. I could not think of someone better to set the stage for the absolute madness Deadmau5 will be bringing. My life is not yet complete without seeing FEED ME throw down live; but after his Oct. 28th set, I will be able to die a happy man.
To complete this massive triple headliner, Avicii—that’s right…A-muh fuggin-vicii!!!!—will soothe our mind, body and soul of the insanity brought by the Mau5trap crew. I was able to catch Avicii’s set at Insomniac’s Nocturnal a couple weeks ago and it was nothing short of spectacular.
BONUS!! Ticket prices for the show have been dropped immensely to just $50 for GA tickets and $150 for VIP!!!
SATURDAY// October 29th
Perhaps the sweetest treat of your Halloween weekend comes in pill form. Sugarpill, master of welding straight sexy with gangsta ishness, constantly lifts the West Coast Bass Movement to new heights. This LA native is touching down in SD Oct. 29th for what is about to be one of the nastiest performances of the year. To see this guy for a pre-sale ticket price of $10 is absolute madness. And get this…If you get SUBversive’s 4 ticket package, the price break gets you or one of your friends in for FREE! Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming posts about this event. Shit’s about to get wiiiiillllldd.

The 11thAnnual Dos Equis XX Monster Bash is taking over downtown with 3 stages and 10 bars. Hypercrush, DJ Vice, and the headliner we’re most excited about, the creator and the father of moombahton, DAVE NADA(!!!) are going to be headlining with many other local fav DJs taking the stage. With thousands of inebriated costume-wearing party goers, what’s not to like? If you’re one of the many of us that like to go all out for Halloween, then you’ll love the $3000 cash prize for the costume competition. Must be at least 21 to party and tickets start at $30. Small price to pay for a night full of drunken debauchery.
MONDAY// October 31st

If you’re still alive after the weekend and still looking to party on Halloween night and you find yourself still in Downtown, definitely cruise down to our favorite hipster hang El Dorado. They’re hosting Disco Bloodbath which is going to be an orgy of local talent. You won’t break the bank going to this party since there is no cover charge and cheap (yet deceptively powerful) drinks all night.
+
The North Park hipster headquarter U-31 is having a their own show on Halloween with Saul Q and resident DJ Colour Vision. If you’re looking for a laid back vibe with none of the Downtown-centric depravity then I highly recommend this top-notch indie dance party for an undoubtedly good time. The best part: 91 CENT DRINKS ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!!
The double headliner of Minnesota and Vokab Kompany will be bringing the heat to one of San Diego’s finest Halloween night shows— HalloWeird. From complete opposite sides of the musical spectrum, these two will make the crowd groove and go completely bonkers. Minnesota, a personal favorite, had bass and unearthly synths coursing through my body for days after his monster set at Abstract Festival. The Keating Hotel has yet to see and, frankly, feel something this massive. I couldn’t think of a better way to top off an out-of-this-world Halloween weekend.

San Diego’s last moombahton party found me sippin’ on champagne and whiskey, feeling blissful as DAVID HEARTBREAK smashed it on the decks! It was raining outside, but everyone that came through was there for the sole purpose of watching an amazing producer do what he does best. And as it turns out, what Heartbreak does best is all types of music! Despite this being a moombah blast, the first two tracks by Heartbreak are unrelated, yet worthy of attention. Halloween is right around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited! In honor of our most morbid holiday, I thought I’d drop off a little goody bag of EDM candy. And just like any good suburban soccer mom, I tried to get a diverse mixture of treats that everyone can enjoy.
I’ll start you off with a new track from one of my favorite producer right now, Shook. He has the ability to create music that is both retro and refreshingly new (nu??) at the same time. Whoever said disco is dead obviously never told Shook. But hey, what better time to reanimate a dead genre than Halloween?
Alright now I’ll be the first to admit that when an artist uses an awesome sample from a movie it immediately makes me like the song to some degree. When an artist I really like uses one, I go Bananas. Without (too) much further ado, I present to you Wake Up by NiT GriT sampling the cult classic Donnie Darko. I had to give Frank, the time traveling bunny, a much needed spot in the post so I figured the post picture was appropriate.
Next up is remix from OVERWERK that bridges the gap between electro and moombahton. This is just the remedy I need to help me come around to the tropical dance party that is moombah. It has a mid tempo beat but still has enough of that grungy bass to be loved by both sides of the EDM realm.
Mac Graham – Midnight (OVERWERK Remix)
Coming atcha from the newly formed TUFFKROWD records is some more disco funk. The Austin, Texas based label just released their first album, TUFF KOMP: ROUND 1. Although I can’t stand that they put all of their names in caps and most of the album was too experimental for my taste, I must give props where they’re due. That happens to be with RICHARD.GEAR (I swear I’m not yelling these names). The full album will be available for free download on their website soon.
My last treats for you are an obvious choice. Figure takes the classic Halloween movie BeetleJuice and adds his own blend of ghostly dubstep. This isn’t Figure’s first time using scary films as inspiration for his genius; The Monster’s Revenge samples Frankenstein which my father assures me was actually scary when it came out.

Ok, so there’s been enough bass power and laser drive since your first round of bass therapy to propel you to the dark side of the moon and back; but, it looks like y’all are starting to fiend for those low frequencies again. I’ve got some massive Glitch-Hop, Dub, and Funk tunes with enough kick to knock the unholiness right out of you.
Love and Light has constantly been pushing the frontier of self-expression and challenging any preconceived notion of “typical bass music.” These guys are truly bass architects, knowing how to manipulate their arsenal of sounds to create something all crunk junkies can get down to. Hailing out of Reno, Nevada—which is becoming a favorite place to perform for many bass artists—Love and Light raises the bar with every release.
Stephan Jacobs released the multi-genre Mad Era EP the other week, featuring many of his new sounds and perhaps suggesting a slightly new direction for this versatile producer. I was super excited to see that he collaborated with some of my favorites: GRiZ and Sexy Sax Man Sergio Flores. With Stephan Jacobs’ melodic glitchy style, Sergio Flores’ baby-making work on the sax and GRiZ’s expertise in funkalicious grime, the whole EP pieced together perfectly—creating something you can rage, groove and vibe to.
Stephan Jacobs & Griz- Pretty Boy

I don’t think there is any girl right now who rocks swag on her sleeve quite like Kreayshawn. Apparently, Helicopter Showdown agreed enough to launch her hit single Gucci Gucci to infinity and beyond with their killer synth and vocal work. Make sure not to miss the breakdown for their 2nd drop, as it is absolutely mind shattering. Turn up das bass.
Kreayshawn – Gucci Gucci ( Helicopter Showdown & IB Remix )
It’s always a mission and a half to remix and transform any classic into a banger; but those who can do it successfully earn a special spot in my book. ChrisB masterfully wove his engineered bass sounds and glitchy pulses into Led Zeppelin’s classic rock song No Quarter. Keep an eye open for releases from his upcoming project, “More Champagne,” with his equally genius compadre Gladkill.
Led Zeppelin- No Quarter (ChrisB Remix)
Crizzly, a 19 year old bass prodigy from Texas, is absolutely blowing up right now. He fuses southern influenced hip-hop with his filthy basslines and booty shaking grooves to create his own really unique style. He’s currently on deck to perform at Escape From Wonderland, the Halloween themed massive, at the Nos Center in San Bernardino on Oct. 29th. If you are in the area or are willing to make the 2 hour drive (assuming you’re rallying from SD), this festival is something you’ll want to experience.
Aj Hernz- Snap Back Swag (Crizzly Remix)
Take this funked-out 100bpm mini-mix to wash down this week’s course of crunchy bass. Chairmann seamlessly spins remixed childhood jams along with those of some top notch, new era producers. This mix is perfect for kickin’ it, raging, or cruising unearthly terrains. Be sure to check out and download ‘The Sweatshop Sessions Vol. 1 + 2’ on his soundcloud.
