I first heard of 5&A Dime years ago when every person around me wanted to be some kind of hip hop artist, skater, or break dancer. I had no interest in such things and thought, “5&A Dime? Mmm… pass.” It wasn’t until recently that I put down the judgments and paid a visit to the boutique.
Upon my first visit to 5&A Dime, my initial thought was “OMG it’s like El Dorado in here – minus the booze!” Complete with hard wood floors, an old jukebox, and a gigantic buffalo head adorning the back wall – 5&A Dime is positively old-timey and nostalgic. Juxtaposed with the moderness of the merchandise – from streetwear to a unique collection of vinyl toys – I knew I had been missing out.
But it wasn’t just the decor and whimsical stock of mustache pillows that had me in awe. The unpretentious vibe and friendliness of the entire staff won me over, and that’s how they get you. Shop there once and you are that much closer to becoming part of the family. Every person who stepped into 5&A Dime were either long time friends or were treated as if they were.

Aside from having excellent customer service, owners and siblings Jay and Darcy Huggins also strive to carry quality goods.
“We carry lifestyle brands most of which are operated by our friends,” says Darcy. “We currently have approximately 10 brands that are local to San Diego.”
Now how can you not love a store that supports local talent? And we’re not talking cheesy “SD” tourist shirts – the brands actually cater to the young stylish men who frequent 5&A Dime. Alphanumeric, Irons, and their very own 5&A Dime brand – just to name a few. Oh and ahem ladies, they do carry a cute selection of women’s wear too! Think a more street version of Urban Outfitters without MGMT blaring over the speakers.
