An Eyemusing Summer Selection – July 2010

I’m the type of musicphile that listens to tunes that suit both the weather and mood that I’m in. You may blanket this under the label “emo” but hear me out and I’m sure you will agree. I can’t listen to “California Gurls” with a grey sky and a cardigan on. Something as sugary and poppy as that song calls for sunny skies and a cheery disposition. With the weather in San Diego being as fickle as it has been, fluctuating between hot heat and overcast gloom, summer songs tend to feel out of place sometimes. For those days when you are feeling a little more chill, I present to you a little of everything to set you right.

The Temper Trap – Love Lost (Keljet Remix)

The Temper Trap picked up steam last summer thanks to a little help from the hit “500 Days of Summer,” but beyond “Sweet Disposition” we have “Love Lost”. Not quite a new track or even a new remix, but still absolutely notable. Keljet gives “Love Lost” a spacier twist and even more of a disco-pop feel by bringing in more synth and drums. While the weather may not be favorable, sometimes you still want to get your feet moving – even just to a little shuffle and headnod.

Grey Ghost - Take A Trip (Do the Boogaloo)

Even when the sun is shining brightly, there are those days you just want to chill out poolside or lay flat on your back in the park. I like to call those hangover days. Grey Ghost’s “Take A Trip (Do the Boogaloo)” is like that bloody Mary or mimosa you need in the morning to help ween you off from a hard night’s drinking. With just enough bass and funky guitar and horns, this disco infused track is perfect after – oh I don’t know – a Dub Dorado.
**Thanks to our friends at Gotta Dance Dirty for throwing up the premiere of this track the other day!

Local Natives – Who Knows Who Cares (BretonLABS Remix)

Speaking of dub, sometimes you just can’t get enough of it from the night before! Great thing is that you can still be chill about it. BretonLABS‘ remix of “Who Knows Who Cares” is probably my most favorite at the moment – and it’s not just because Local Natives is my favorite “buzz band” of the year! Mixing the folky instrumental sound of Local Natives with a heavier bass gives “Who Knows Who Cares” a darker and moodier tone – perfect for anyone who wants just a little solitude to themselves on a gloomy summer’s day.

Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek (Tiesto’s In Search Of Sunrise Remix)

If we’re going to talk emotion, this track practically has little salty tears brimming at my eyes… And my hands waving in the air (I’m sorry, the little raver girl in me had to escape for just a little bit). Imogen Heap is already known to be quite the emotionally-driven artist, but paired with the progressive trance of Tiesto, “Hide and Seek” is absolutely magical. Trust that your heart will ride those synth waves, drop at the spacey breaks, and hop along to the drum n’ bass.

Justin Michael and Kemal – Her World Goes On

And what is a music post without a little pop in it? Everyone in mainstream is riding the wave of dance music – from Usher to Ne-yo to new comer Taio Cruz. If you’re in the mood for heartbreak lyrics set to a polished synthy dance track, Justin Michael and Kemal’sHer World Goes On” is for you. I’m surprised I am not hearing this song on the radio right now – it’d totally be my guilty pleasure “Hey-my-heart-hurts-a-little-but-I-think-I-want-to-sing-and-dance-about-it” song. And check out the video, it’s as colorful and glittery as the song is. This track is by those same guys who produced that killer remix Kaskade himself dropped during his set this year at EDC.
