Urban Casual Vibe
Although it’s industrial urban interior design makes it quite the big one step up from your usual neighborhood bar, what BASIC urban kitchen & bar offers is quintessentially local-minded:
BASIC’s owner, Jon Mangini, wanted to provide the East Village neighborhood with a relaxed, chilled atmosphere that serves a crowd that live, work, and play in Downtown San Diego. Serving up thin Connecticut-style pizza straight from the brick oven, it’s a great spot to hit up as a group, or as a very hungry twosome.
Pick your base- white or red sauce- and you choose all the toppings. One of my favorite combos is with mashed potato, garlic, bacon, and little neck clams on the white base: Like a portable, yummy twist on clam chowder. But to be perfectly honest, no matter what you put on a BASIC pie, it is going to taste amazing. Even with broccoli – still awesome.
Drinks are also reasonably priced: Six dollars for well cocktails, five to six dollars for draft and bottled beers, and signature BASIC cocktails like their BASIC Mojito and martinis are ten dollars a pop. The BASIC Bloody Mary is anything but: Infused Ultimat vodka is mixed with their home made spicy Bloody Mary mix, a seasoned pepper rim, and garnished with cherry tomatoes, pepperoncinis, and blue-cheese stuffed olives. A decadent way to cure that hangover!
The space itself is absolutely massive- given its historic relevance as a warehouse dated back to 1921. Two bar areas help to alleviate the crowding around the bar. Typical of the neighborhood bar, pool tables provide patrons with post-work playtime.
An encaged lounge area provides cushy seating for socializing on any given night, while on Tuesday nights, the area is transformed into a gallery showcasing local art- catering to the eclecticism and creatively-inclined individuals in the East Village neighborhood.
Mix it Up: Lately BASIC has been host to some very fun parties, bringing together the all the Who’s Who in San Diego; From art shows, to tweet-ups, to various launch parties, and even some eclectic events that don’t fit any category, make sure you are in the know, so you don’t miss all the awesome events coming up!
