Our dear friend and arguably the strangest character we’ve ever been confronted by MICKEY FORD has joined up with fellow “troubled soul” Elliot Holiday and put together a massive art exhibition featuring over 70 pieces of visual stimuli and a heaping array of WTF.

Young Mickey can be described as a “gentle playboy with a colorfully deranged imagination” – and he’s a damn good at what he does. The fruits of his creative output are playfully offensive and whimsically turbulent, and necessitate a modest sense of humor or a substantial amount of crack cocaine. I don’t know Elliot Holiday personally but Mickey describes him as a “shy toddler” so guess that’s all we’ll both know until tonight.

I could pretend that I know what you should expect at this event, so I could tell you to go and stuff but I haven’t the faintest idea what kinds of twisted fantasies these guys have schemed up and brought to life. Just know that the last time I went to one of Mickey’s “shows” I ended up drunk and sprawled out on the floor of his studio wearing a mustard suit and laughing myself to tears.

However here’s Mickey’s Checklist to give you an even more vague idea of what to expect:
☑ Refreshments
☑ Air plane sounds
☑ Paintings
☑ Hairy animals
☑ Awkwardness
☑ Last quarter of the moom
☑ High Society
☑ Bubble Gum

Casual Dress ● Rain or Shine ● Peoples Choice Awards ● Gold Star

——
The gallery show is TONIGHT and goes from 6pm-10pm (ish) at JETT Gallery in Little Italy across from Super El Camino.

For more event info check out the Facebook Event Page here and “Like” Mickey’s Fan page for the full bizarre spectrum of lovable rarities.

*Only Love in the 92101*

If this is your first glimpse of the ‘Hood here’s a brief rundown about what this guide is all about:

“What’s Good in the ‘Hood” is a weekly webzine dedicated to San Diego’s Downtown area, including Little Italy, Gaslamp, and the East Village, and sometimes those parts just bordering. The format: A simple yet thoughtful rundown of everything in the 92101 that’s relevant or particularly noteworthy for the week. Nothing fancy-lookin’ or over-saturated with Groupons and dating hotlines. Just something that’s informative and extremely effective. All cool, but without the frills.

All collected and easily printed to be the size of just ONE 8×11 sheet of paper. (Awesome AND eco-friendly!)

It’s the perfect guide for established locals looking for a heads-up on Downtown news, choice nightlife happenings, and under-the-radar specials all around town; and it’s a  convenient cheat-sheet for those exploring our lovely city for the first time: Simply fold it up and tuck in your back-pockets – and use it to find the best experiences you won’t find on the first 5 pages of Google.

Simply Put: “What’s Good in The ‘Hood”: is everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

You will find all the links to the places, the people, and the guest lists to the events featured in this week’s WGITH listed below after the jump! (more…)

WOW…words can only go so far in describing the multitude of awesomeness that consumed Silverlake, CA last weekend from May 27th-30th. After going on 12 years of attending raves/massives, I finally found myself at the first outdoor festival experienced in my lifetime, The Do Lab’s annual LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE.

To say that those in attendance were beautiful, eclectic, and eccentric characters of immense love for music and culture is an understatement. The vibes, energy, and overall attitude of the flowing sea of personalities was overwhelming. Everyone was gathered under a singular unified goal; to lift their minds beyond the physical plane in a setting of cutting edge electronic music, art, and the magnificence of complete immersion in nature.

My girlfriend and I arrived Saturday morning to the camp grounds with thousands of tents pitched in view, and a roaring excitement brewing in our stomachs. After carrying heaps of luggage, riding on an open crowded barn-like shuttle, and scurrying around dirt roads to find our friends, we finally reached our destination and set-up shop for the weekend. All I could think of is “It’s time to get drunk and dance my fuckin ass off!” Shortly after acclimating to our new home for the next few days, we departed on a mission to take in all the festival had to offer.

With a valley below our camp site, and a hill leading to spiritual finds above, we made a decision to take the lower route and envelope ourselves in musical delight. Their were three stages all unique to their setting. The WOOGIE stage housed all types of House music and 4-to-the-floor goodness. The BAMBOO stage was an eclectic mix of bass attracting the most acrobatic earthy types who all seemed talented with hooping or some other form of moving expression. The LIGHTNING stage was the main stage shown above, with LED walls projecting everything from morphing shivas to colliding planets. All-in-all….the setup was fuckin amazing.

There was so much aural and visual stimulation to take in that highlighting all of it in it’s entirety would be a masterful task. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE is definitely something that needs to be experienced. Since my first love is music I wanted to share with you the artists that stood out to me the most that you may or may not be familiar with. Trust me…it’s well worth your time to check them out.

KRADDY

Former member and one of the original founders of the GLITCH MOB, Kraddy is an utter beast when performing live. From his Rock and Roll bravado to rap star swaggar, at times I thought the earth was shattering under my feet at the will of his hands. His tunes are all over the bass music spectrum; Glitch, Dubstep, Midtempo….all cosmic, all larger than life. He even had a live drummer whose precision was so locked on track with Kraddy’s drops it seemed like they were a singular person. Kraddy’s Soundcloud is filled with nasty tunes and I suggest you take a listen. Kraddy O’ Daddy is a killer!

Kraddy – No Comply (FREE DOWNLOAD) by KRADDY

EL PAPACHANGO

Electro, Ragga, Breaks, Dancehall…this Buenos Aires native has a versatile palette for beats and delivers a relentless dance party to all in attendance. I had never actually heard of EL PAPACHANGO prior to the LIB, and even still there’s very little info about him flowing around the internet. All I’ve got to say is he is filled to the brim with Latin flavor and absolutely crushed the Bamboo stage on Sunday. If you know anything about him or have links to his music, please leave a comment below!

HEYOKA

HEYOKA born Andrei Olenev is a bass music wizard. I’ve been listening to his music for some time now but never had a chance to see him perform until LIB. Out of all the artists I saw during the festival, he had the most forward mind-blowing dubstep, midtempo, and glitch hop tunes I’ve heard to date. I mean look at the guy… What a badman! You can check out a minimix he put out last December which should show you why I was so obsessed with his set.

Heyoka mandelboogiewoogie Minimix by Heyoka

Now that I am back in the office, back to reality (and somewhat depressed to be here), I can confidently say that LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE changed my life. It really opened my eyes to creative minds outside the scope of artists circulating normal club nights. It showed me an entirely different group of people who were so in tune with nature, spirituality, and bone crushing bass that I’ve been left with an ear-to-ear smile since my departure. If you have never been to an outdoor festival, or if you are a veteran but have never hit LIB, I suggest you make the trip next year…you’ll be thanking me later that you did.

I’ve been thinking about starting something like this for a long time. My ‘hood, or San Diego’s Downtown area lacks a quality-written and edgy neighborhood-focused newsletter/publication. SO given the fact I know far too much about this city for my own damn good, I figured it was time to share my insidery experience and knowledge of what’s what in 92101, in a weekly webzine/print format.

“What’s Good in The ‘Hood” features exactly that: A simple yet thoughtful rundown of everything in the Gaslamp/East Village/Little Italy that’s relevant and particularly awesome for that week. All collected and easily printed to be the size of just ONE 8×11 sheet of paper. It’s the perfect guide for established locals looking for a heads-up on ‘Hood news and under-the-radar specials around town; and it’s convenient for tourists to fold up and carry with them in their back-pocket for the best experience they won’t find on the first 5 pages of Google.

I wanted to create something that was just plain cool. Nothing fancy or over-saturated with coupons and bullshit. Just something that’s informative and extremely effective. Without the frills.

Simply Put: “What’s Good in The ‘Hood”: is everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

To be completely honest, I don’t know how to hyperlink on the PDF itself yet and I still have a lot to learn in terms of making this as accessible as possible. But hey, this is only Volume One. And I can guarantee you, it’s only going to get better from here on out.

So get out there, and enjoy everything about this wonderful city.

If you have any cool tidbits and announcements you’d like to contribute to next week’s edition, feel free to contact me here.

Sometimes life calls for a change. A new direction. When you have a fresh pair of new threads it fills you up with a sense of confidence and leaves you feeling savvy. THE BLEND is designed to arouse and inspire the magic forces at work, set ideas in motion, and get the juices flowing in what I like to call AESTHETIC STIMULATION. The term can be easily defined as the ‘personal branding’. Changing up your gear unlocks a different side of you, tapping into this beautiful way of thinking may turn a couple of heads and attract more personality to your surroundings.

I’ve got five ingredients, fresh and ready to stimulate your senses and pave the way for a cleaner and sleeker look. Charm and appeal can often be brought out when we feel our very best, and the seasons are destined to change. Here’s how to boost your confidence, image, and well… sex appeal.

Denim has a huge impact on the way we dress, and they range in different colors, sizes, and cuts. “The Cut” of the denim is the biggest asset of responsibility we can do in favor of ourselves when picking out an outfit. Think of it as your exterior skin, sometimes giving that skin a makeover changes the way others view it. Go ahead, fix up that barn!

Levi’s have just released their slimmest cut in years, while also are taking a greener stance by making their denim with less water usage than times recent. Introducing a new line labeled “Water<Less”, the eco-friendly jeans are manufactured using an average of 28 percent less water. While saving the planet you can also save a little in your wallet; these bad boys are coming in only at $80! This special denim above entitled “Ex-Girlfriend” is currently only available through select Levi’s Stores and OAK NYC in their special department A.OK. Grab these denim delights while they’re still fresh!

Shoes are meant for walking, but they do a lot of talking. And I’m talking about literally their tongues. Well, and a little more. Minimal is the way to go these days, so keep it clean and conservative.

Spring is almost back in full effect so what better way to prepare your feet by getting some new kicks! Sperry Topsiders are a great way to keep it casual and cool this new year. Whether you are planning a boating trip, a walk in the park, or just a local cruise through the streets Topsiders are a great way to pull off the classic image without looking dull, and while staying comfortable. They have a huge range in different colorways and come with many choice fabrics and material! They age very well, have a non-skid sole, and they are built to handle water. Both colorways above are specials currently at Sperry, my personal favorites are the Black on Black Leather (VERY RARE!) The range of price varies from $65-$95 not bad for a pair of shoes that could last you ages.

It always seems to be very difficult to find a bag that suits your needs while maintaining a clean look at the same time. What kind of bags you carry can often say much about you before you even speak. One thing for sure — it has to protect your goods, have plenty of space, and not be overbearing.

Julius has a great luxury bag if you want that soft supple lamb leather and a nice seamless finish, it’s a bit hefty coming in at almost $1400. Luckily, Blackbird Vintage has you covered with amazing bags that range in different sizes and prices to fit your budget, while keeping your hands empty and your shoulders light at the same time.

Jewelry has a tale all of it’s own. Most think that it’s not important or has very little to no value, but I know that’s not the case with you! Having the bases covered from head to toe is a coordination thing. Having that little extra flair around your neck, fingers, ears, or wrist changes up the game. It says “Hi, my name is _____.”, “Hello,  look at me. I’m edgy, classy, sophisticated, and have a sense of style.”, but not having any may not draw any attention at all. Think of the odds and ends as conversational composition. It may bring that attractive boy or girl closer by look, a compliment, or well a full conversation. Another way to look at it is that that special someone may just want to grab onto your special thing while being a bit closer to you.

One of my personal all time favorites has to be Alex & Chloe who signature style can compliment anyone, and keeps it pretty original. The prices are great and so are the pieces. Think instant magnetism!

Online shopping is the final frontier. It’s about the closest thing we have in our day to day lives that makes every thing teleport before our own eyes like Star Trek! Whether you know what you want or desire a certain style, you’re bound to find something bold and creative through giving the world-wide-web a little search effort.

Currently, ASOS.COM is where anybody who is highly into to fashion or trying to develop an online presence into their style is definitely there. Looks and style range big here, and they have a way to fit anyone’s budget onto their pages. Check them out today you’ll be glad you browsed.

Hopefully these looks are inspiring and spark an idea of change. Maybe, it will add a bit of selectivism in your eye, an add-on upgrade to your self-conscious diet.

Every once in awhile we need a boost. A push forward. A slap on the ass to get things done and launch our minds into the creative plane.  THE BLEND is designed to arouse and inspire the magic forces at work, set ideas in motion, and get the juices flowing in what I like to call CREATIVE HYPE.  The term can be easily defined as the ‘state of invention’. No matter what you do on the day-to-day grind, tapping into this beautiful way of thinking will bring motivation and enlightenment to all your activities.

I’ve got five ingredients, fresh and ready to stimulate your senses and pave the way for a creative day.  Some music, some visual art, and some fashion for a proper appearance. Just one suggestion… Don’t let these things cut back your productivity. They have an enchanting way of gripping your attention and make the day pass by in haste…

RINSE.FM

Pirate radio has never been fresher. RINSE.FM has been on the forefront of electronic music for 16 years and climbing, and they just received their official broadcasting license at the tail end of 2010.  Beyond that, they’ve been on my personal listen list daily since my teens. Some of the world’s top artists in House, DubstepFuture BassFunky (you name it) have graced the airwaves of this once illegal broadcast. You can view all the artists and their weekly shows, with podcast installments fully downloadable on the site. If you aren’t already familiar with this monster of a radio station, it is about time you get well-acquainted.

LOOKVA

LOOKVA.TV is a hub of brilliance.  Centered around music, fashion, photography, and all types of videos from the mildly strange to utterly absurd, this viewing tube is always a good stop to get the synapses firing.  They’ve curated a humongous library of visual stimuli that will make you turn page to page wanting more.  Big ups to Lookva… Remarkably fun stuff on here.

The genius’ behind EDITSBYEDIT.CO.UK have put a visual spin on some of our favorite genres of music. With music being so up to interpretation, it’s delightful to come across aesthetics that simply define styles of sound and make excellent pieces for any lonely wall space.  I’m just a tad bit hooked on these.  All Edits posters share a common ground: they’re modern, minimalistic, and oozing with crispness. The ones above from left to right represent Disco, Acid House, and Electro, with tons more available to fit your appeal. Visit their site and you’ll most likely end up with cash missing from your wallet and some fresh decorations in your living space.

They come in all types of colors, with a nostalgic toy-like quality, yet are highly durable. Check em’ out.
