Visitors and locals alike, should experience the best of San Diego’s classic cocktails. We’ve been fortunate enough to have a flourishing movement of craft-concocting mastery grace our lovely city in the past couple years, and thus we find no reason not to celebrate San Diego’s fresh and plentiful offerings of an exquisite and time-honored taste. Slink in and stay a while, at any one of these top-notch fine and crafty establishments.

Full Bar
Speakeasy Vibe
Upscale Atmosphere
Plan ahead: because this hidden away escape from the bells and whistles of the Gaslamp’s bright lights is no longer a secret and its 20-something capacity fills up with reservations fast. Don’t even think about pulling a “walk-in”– a night at Noble Experiment is a serious affair, and it should be treated as such.
For the classic, sophisticated, yet cozy ambiance of one of the chicest new additions to San Diego’s roster of tastemakers’ approved establishments, The Noble Experiment offers up an ever-changing list of classic concoctions served with only the highest caliber of liquors, ingredients, and with the utmost thoughtful precision. Organic/“slow” food
If you happen to be by Little Italy or Downtown San Diego, you are merely a short hop and a skip away from a spot that has been beloved by San Diegans since 2007, Starlite Lounge: A gorgeous retro beauty nestled in Mission Hills that beyond its farm-to-table fare served until midnight daily, its fabulous interior, and whimsically “starlit” outdoor patio, Starlite serves up arguably the city’s best Mule. A concoction of Rain Organic Vodka, Ginger beer, and Angostura bitters topped off with a lime in their signature copper cup, it’s a loaded vessel that will likely put you on your bum if you dare doubt its potency.
If you choose to dabble beyond the Mule, I’d point you in the direction of the Gunga Din, made with Montecristo 12-year aged rum, cold Earl Grey, cardamon syrup, lemon and a dash of mint. If you’re a real brute or just looking for a potent slap in the face, try the Kentucky Colonel, made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, ginger beer, lemon, and a dash of house made cherry vanilla bitters for a quick as a lick lullaby into no recollection of last night land…

Whisknladle is one of those rare establishments that has never disappointed me. It very well could be the very “jewel” of La Jolla’s namesake and long-standing reputation as one of San Diego’s most picturesque locales, for both locals and tourists alike. Amidst La Jolla’s Downtown area, you’ll find Whisknladle quietly nestled in, just a block or two off the beaten path and away from the gourmet shops and boutiques.
Beyond just their thoughtful and impeccably prepared farm-to-table selections, the handcrafted cocktails also beckon note for their exemplary palatable achievements, and they, too, deserve their own glimmer in the spotlight as well.
Concoctions such as the Tamarind Margarita, with Chinese Five-Spice, Orange and infused-Tequila or The Julian, with cinnamon-infused bourbon, rosemary, and cider are sure-fire libations that will warm your insides. Less fiery vessels such as the Lavendar Cosmo with Blueberry & Lavender infused vodka, white cran & blueberry will brighten the senses. But fair warning if you chose to order the Passion Fruit Vanilla Mimosa: you may want to opt for the pitcher to share as surely your thirsty mates will want more than just one sweet sip.

GREAT Service
While the decor may be a bit on the quirkier side, you can always depend on the vibe, the service, and of course, the concoctions, to always be absolutely on point at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge. East Village’s prime scenester locale also happens to be one of the city’s founding fathers of our explosive craft cocktail movement: True to their interior’s “Gold Rush” theme, the El Dorado staff is adorned in era-appropriate attire with a modern twist, yet their strict technique in crafting the perfect cocktail has and will always remain uncompromisable, despite the large and demanding crowds that flock to EL D every Friday and Saturday night.
While El Dorado changes up its menu and celebrates its release seasonally, tried and true classics never seem to slip away: You’ll never see any lack of the Moscow Mule, served in a Mason Jar and topped with a lime and twisted Mint leaf across the bar, while the Oaxaca Old-Fashioned is reserved only for those true connoisseurs whose tolerance can stand up to its smoky, sensory-arousing allure — and its not so secret sneaky affects.

In a city sprinkled with commercialism, finding that perfect independent coffee shop can be a little daunting. You want atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, excellent service, and of course – a delicious cup of Joe. While we aren’t exactly Seattle or San Francisco, we do have a few gems. Luckily for you, quite a few new establishments have popped up in our fair city, providing coffee lovers and Wi-Fi seekers options that do not involve that familiar circular, green logo.
Coffee Junkie: Ryan Bros Coffee

1894 Main St
San Diego, CA 92113
(619) 546-6314
5 min away from Downtown San Diego
Cafe and Roastery
Free Wi-Fi
Hours: Mon-Fri (5:30am-5:30pm) Sat (7:30am-4pm) Sun (9am-2pm)
[Downtown/Barrio Area]
Literally 5 minutes away from the Gaslamp, Ryan Bros Coffee in Barrio Logan is the spot for the ultimate coffee lover. With an extensive menu filled with blends, espressos, cocoas, and specialty drinks, Ryan Bros Coffee has a drink to fit whatever mood you are in. A popular drink for those on the go and in need of a chocolate fix is the Cafe Mocha with Mexican Cocoa (also available in European and White Night). Let me tell you, the aroma of the Cafe Mocha was absolutely delightful and I am happy it was the drink recommended to me.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Ryan Bros Coffee is that it is not a mere coffee shop, but it is a true roastery. Think like a brewery, but for coffee. Situated towards the back of the building is where Ryan Bros roasts their own beans. Your coffee will always be fresh, and once they have your taste buds hooked, you can purchase those same beans for your own personal use. Best of all? All of their coffee is fair trade.
The building housing this coffee heaven is positively urban and spacious with its brick walls and beamed ceilings. Far from being a dingy warehouse in the Barrio, Ryan Bros Coffee is perfect for grabbing an early morning drink or stopping by for lunch. They do have free Wi-Fi for the laptop inclined, however it is not the spot for hours of study. It’s definitely more of a place to socialize with friends, family, and co-workers.
Tip: If you aren’t a coffee goer but your friends are, try one of their iced tea cocktails. I hear they are to die for!
Home Away from Home: Lestat’s on Park

4496 Park Blvd
San Diego, CA 92116
(619) 501-6638
7-10 min from downtown San Diego
Free Wi-Fi
Studious atmosphere
Hours: Soon to be 24hrs – keep checking back
Formerly known as that coffee bar in University Heights with the huge mural of a cleavage bearing chick, Cream Coffee Bar was bought out by Lestat’s and re-christened as Lestat’s on Park. The previous bleak cafeteria look of Cream has since been replaced with new wallpaper, comfy chairs, and dark wood furniture. The entire atmosphere has changed to that of a private study made for a cultured and savvy person in a smoking jacket.
Much of Cream’s menu remains the same with the addition of the ol’ Lestat’s spin, but it isn’t so much the coffee I enjoy most about this place. Aside from the atmosphere, the best feature of Lestat’s on Park is that it is laptop friendly. Not only is the middle portion of the shop sectioned off for those in search of quiet work time, the place is abundant in outlets. Power strips line the walls so that you are never at a loss for power.
Lestat’s on Park is open late, so those insomniac hours of study may be spent here. It is said that this location will also become a 24hr shop, just like the original Lestat’s in Normal Heights. For now Lestat’s on Park closes at midnight – so be sure to check back for complete hours.
Sweet Tooth Binge: Cafe Venti

4681 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 279-8500
11-15 min from downtown San Diego
Meal portion of the menu served after 6pm. Waffles, yogurt, and shaved ice served all day.
Beer on tap and soju also available
Hours: Close at 11pm weekdays, call for complete hours
Cafe Venti, despite it’s Italian name, is not what you would expect it to be. Instead of Italian coffees, you are more likely to find the Asian variety of milk teas. Instead of parents seeking paninis for lunch, you’ll find people requesting the drool-worthy Waffle Yo. And instead of soothing acoustic tunes, you’ll both see and hear sugary sweet K-Pop music videos on the flat screen TVs set throughout the shop. Complete with doorbells on the tables to gain the attention of the waiters and waitresses, Cafe Venti is a K-Town experience away from K-Town.
If fixing your sweet tooth cravings is what you are after, Cafe Venti will be sweet to all five of your senses. As previously mentioned, the Waffle Yo is extremely popular – and it’s hard to deny it as the aroma wafts through out the shop as soon as it is ordered. A fresh waffle is prepared just for you, topped with a large helping of frozen yogurt, and surrounded by generous amounts of kiwi, strawberries, and pineapples. Finish off with one of their specialty lattes – Lava Latte (white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate blend), Oreo Latte, or Green Tea Latte – and you’ll be hurting for the dentist! Cafe Venti is not exactly laptop friendly, but the plus side is that the wi-fi is protected and not hogged by nerds playing Starcraft or watching movies online (like many of the other coffee and tea shops within this area).
Tip: Request to sit at the Christmas lit patio (yes, year round) and you will be treated to a fresh Snuggie! Yes! They give you Snuggies to wear out on the patio!!!!
Also Try: Filter

1295 University Ave
San Diego, CA 92103
(619) 299-0145
Open 24 Hours
If you’ve been to Filter in North Park, you’re in for a treat at the new location right in the heart of Hillcrest. We have not visited this location yet, but there has been nothing but positive buzz about this new spot. Open 24hrs, Filter in Hillcrest is said to be a lot more spacious. You can practically see right through the coffee shop as it appears virtually “wall-less,” a plus for many of the day-goers who love natural light.
750 West Fir
San Diego, CA 92101
(619) 255-0735
Hours: 6am-9pm Everyday
influxcafe.com
&
1948 Broadway
San Diego, CA
(619) 255-9470
Influx Cafe isn’t quite like your stereotypical “coffee house“: Owner Jason Twilla wanted the design of Influx’s second location to be reflective of term “Influx” itself: An all-encompassing “sphere; “spacey” with a sense of meaning; welcoming an overflow of positive energy and an abundance of light. Influx is located in Little Italy’s new, likely-to-become the social epicenter of the neighborhood, building, the Q - whose gorgeous and innovative design has Jonathan Segal to thank. Segal brought to life his own envisions of a building reflecting a perceptiveness and sensitivity to space, and a thoughtful sense of “openness”. Thus, Influx’s new locale couldn’t be more perfectly suited to Twilla’s own vision.
The space reflects a sense of order: Clean lines, great natural light, modern decor – no mismatched pillows nor knapsacks here. No matter where you sit at Influx, you can see everything: Far and away from your usual dark, nook-y, and eclectic coffee joint. Yet despite their lack of “trying to be indie” efforts, Influx is relaxing and cozy in its own right: A cool breeze runs through the spot, whether you’re inside and out. Comfy cushioned booth or bench seating line nearly all walls. The outdoor seating is thoughtfully arranged and uncongested…

My obsession with cupcakes has forced me to embark on an extensive journey through San Diego’s cupcake landscape. I’ve traveled through this city seeking out the “Holy Grail of cupcakes,” the knocks-me-off-my-feet, takes-my-breath-away, leaves-me-speechless kind of cupcake, that I’m constantly seeking. I just have two conditions when it comes to finding this perfect cupcake: Number One-It must be vanilla. Call me boring, but there’s nothing that compares to the subtle yet deliciously sweet taste I’ve known my whole life and, thus, have never felt compelled to diverge from. Number Two-I must also have a giant glass of ice cold milk. Yes, I know I’m like a five year-old, but take my word for it, there really is no better way to enjoy a cupcake. I also kind of have a thing for rainbow sprinkles… They’re so cute and tasty, I can’t resist a cupcake delicately covered with those little guys! So I’ve scoured San Diego, venturing everywhere from Solana Beach to the Gaslamp, tasting the signature vanilla cupcake at each venue. Below I have compiled and manicured this list of my faves, along with a few extra pounds I really didn’t need..

It may be the shortest month of the year, but there is certainly no lack of opportunities to compromise that New Year’s Resolution (if you haven’t already) and to boogie down to top-notch dance music & filthy fucking bass by some of the globe’s most sought-out acts. Get ready for a totally reckless month of top-shelf dubstep acts including BENGA, EXCISION, and 12th Planet infiltrating San Diego’s Downtown; LED Presents’ just absolutely MASSIVE anniversary party on the 19th, featuring global EDM juggernaut KNIFE PARTY along with a host of other top tier acts; and let’s not to forget the legendary MARDI GRAS celebration/street rave going down in SD’s historic Gaslamp District this FAT TUESDAY.
NEW SECTION: **WEEKLIES**
Filling you in on regular shindigs around town we super dig and are, more times than not, free to enjoy and even easier to love…
–> Full list of events, guest lists, secret deals, and more after the jump!

So it *may* have taken us a day or so to recover from the big bang of a New Years Eve our team had this year, but now we have shaken off the post-party blues and now we are MORE THAN AMPED for all the 2012 *newness* and parties that will be coming our way! For all of you who didn’t make the silly mistake of vowing to “ease up” on your wild ways this new year (let’s just see how long that will last…) there’s heaps of opportunities this brand new year to get down to killa beats and all up to no good…
This month we’re also including a new section on our party guide titled **WEEKLIES** filling you in on regular shindigs around town we super dig and are, more times than not, free to enjoy and even easier to love…
Shout to my fellow Aquariuses – this is our month water baybays. Let’s get super weird.
Full list of events, guest lists, secret deals, and more after the jump!
I feel like the title is self-explanatory.
1. HARVARD BASS + Anthony Attalla at the W Hotel
From personal experience, I am 100% convinced this will be an amazing party. We were asked to host an ALL locals NYE party W Hotel wide last year, and honest to G it is still in my mind one of the coolest parties I have ever done. This year, they’ve bolstered the roster up a B-I-G notch, featuring SD’s hometown hero HARVARD BASS and Anthony Attalla.
Harvard Bass has thrown down some epic performances this year, and just last week at El Dorado he threw down an off-the-wall party-jam laden set that totally lit the place up and quickly facilitated the knocking back of gratuitous amounts of drinks. I have no doubt Harvard Bass will shut down the old year and ring in the new year the right away. And if it’s anything like it was last year, The W Hotel certainly won’t throw an anything less than stellar shindig. Pricey, but worth it. $80.
PRO MIX TIP: DEFINITELY GET A HOTEL ROOM. Trying to find a taxi home from Little Italy on NYE is an absolute NIGHTMARE. And the rooms were made for after parties… Search Hotel Rates Here
+
2. TIMEWAVE ZERO feat. EPROM + EshOne + Mike Gao + More at Kava Lounge
SD’s beats scene and the corresponding local artists have been rapidly gaining attention, and thus the heavyweights of the scene SUBLMNL, LIQUID GEOMETRY, and DATASET are coming together and throwing a massive end-of-the-year SHUT DOWN party. SF’s EPROM will be headlining the evening, and good homie of TheMixster.com, EshOne (aka DON VALDEZ) will be high-tailing it from ABQ to ring in the New Year with rumored exclusives-just-for-the-evening: a collection of ball-dropping, sticky-floor-inducing countdown closers. Other not-to-miss sets of the evening from Mike Gao, HMT DMT and Misk will certainly be worth every penny of the thrifty $15 presale $20 ticket.
That not enough to convince you? Then check THIS baybay out:

3. El Dorado’s ROARING NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
Of course, El Dorado is going to have an amazing NYE party. I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t. The optional theme of “1920s Flapper attire” is a great excuse to feed that empty space in my heart left by the season finale of “Boardwalk Empire” and trusted locals The Office Twins, Groundfloor, Adam Salter, and Blancnoire will be behind the decks. If you RSVP & arrive before 10:30pm entry is only $10! And bottles of champagne are only $25 a pop (pun!) all night long. A sure fire win all around
+
4. LED PRESENTS: OMFG! At SD Sports Arena.
On NYE I personally opt for the more intimate family and friends inside neighborhood bar dance parties. However, the line-up as always for LED PRESENTS’ NYE bash is resoundingly epic, and if you have the heart to brave the rave this NYE, I would without a doubt point you this very direction. It’s San Diego’s own Wonderland, TAO/ whatever else is going on in LA experience, conveniently being held just 10 minutes away from Downtown SD. 18+/21+ to booze. $75-$150. 21+ Ticket price includes entry to 5am NYD party at Voyeur.
+
5. GET SEXUAL w/ EVOL INTENT + REID SPEED + GRIDLOK at Brick by Brick
This is without a doubt the best DnB party happening in ALL of California on NYE. The line-up couldn’t be more stacked with massive names from all over the bass music realm including Gridlok, EVOL INTENT, Reid Speed, along with SD’s own trusted inner circle of local jungle heads. And the price is right entry wise $25 so if DnB is your steeze, this is 100% where you will want to be NYE. Party goes til 3AM and there will be hosted well drinks & beer from 9pm-10pm.
+
5. BALLIN OUTTA TOWN– Snow Globe Festival
At this very moment in time, I am still kicking myself for not going to this. Had the transportation options from San Diego been somewhat less nightmarish and complicated I would be at Snow Globe Festival in an absolute HEARTBEAT. The line-up for the 3 day festival taking place in South Lake Tahoe is brilliant, fresh, essentially, the top-notch peak of the gold standard. Our friends at BLAP Productions are throwing an after party after each night of the festival, each with incredible (and obviously envy-inducing) line-ups of their own. Tickets are $150 for all three days, hotel rates are reasonable, and the experience we can only predict, will have the rest of us kicking ourselves for the rest of the year. FUCK.
There’s an option for NYE that fits anyone’s budget and we know any party that’s made our short list, will certainly not disappoint. Follow us on Twitter, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on after parties/NYD party action cuz we’ll no doubt be dawn-lurking about with the rest of you crackheads.
Happy New Year Mixsters!!!
While Dillon Francis‘ latest drops have been more forward on the electro house tips, I refuse to disregard his absolutely searing moombah bangers that spearheaded his rapidly ascent up the EDM food chain and his name soaring like a global whirlwind across the blogosphere.
I have written an unsettling amount and gushed my unabashed praise for young LA-native Dillon Francis in the past. SO instead I would like to direct your attention to this incredibly thoughtful and comprehensive article about Dillon Francis I read recently, which can be found in Vol.4 of Scion A/V web “Zine”.
By way of experienced foresight (slash self-acknowledgement of my own personal bad interweb habits), for those who distress over simply clicking through to yet ANOTHER webpage, you may peruse the aforementioned article in the screen shot I’ve provided for y’all below:
2011 has been a tremendous year for the moombahton. But mark my words, 2012 will be the year of the MOOMB. And Dillon Francis, fingers crossed, will continue to hold down the a co-pilot seat at the forefront, should he shift back into his teethy-mid-tempo-dancefloor tearing-always-clad-with-a-big-ol- sneaky-smile ways.
My friend Stephen Vasquez, of fellow forefrontin’ moombahton production two-piece, Sazon Booya, shot this kick ass video for Dillon’s single I.D.G.A.F.O.S. –>
“I brought this ham for everyone!!!”
If all that doesn’t compel you to buy the $15 ticket to the show… Perhaps this tantalizing selection of addictive audible goodies might sway your ways…

We’ve had a stellar 2011 to say the least, and San Diego once again refuses to SHUT DOWN the year without several serious BANGers to close it out!! While last month had a bit of a lack of big names coming through town SD promoters have stepped up and put on their EDM game faces this month; presenting a gleaming variety of top-notch global acts, killer indie line-ups, and so many opps to catch some quality EDM for ZERO $$$ down at the door.
Still waiting on our favorite crews and indie venues to get their A’s into G and get their NYE events announced but as always, we update this guide OCD party fiend style so as soon as we know what’s up with all the ball droppin events, you’ll know too. xx

The best holiday of the year is rapidly approaching. It’s the time of the year to dress up like an idiot (I’ll be rocking the giant hotdog), an unholy hell spawn, or a prostitute. We’re created a list of the best parties and shows in SD to hit up this most memorable weekend of debauchery. You’d better start preparing now: work on your cardio, get the kinks out of your new dance moves, and toughen up that liver. We’re getting all sorts crazy!
FRIDAY// October 28th
I’ve never been so STOKED to see Deadmau5 as I am now. His new stage scrambles the brains of all those whom it encounters. I WANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! Yadderamean?! The psychedelic time machine operated by a mouse…[excuse me] Mau5…takes a life of its own as it walks you down shroomy-lane. How often does a musical mastermind and mind-blowing spectacle come in this sort of package?
OH! And I almost forgot…Freaking FEED ME of Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label will be dropping F(ilth) bombs on Petco Park. I could not think of someone better to set the stage for the absolute madness Deadmau5 will be bringing. My life is not yet complete without seeing FEED ME throw down live; but after his Oct. 28th set, I will be able to die a happy man.
To complete this massive triple headliner, Avicii—that’s right…A-muh fuggin-vicii!!!!—will soothe our mind, body and soul of the insanity brought by the Mau5trap crew. I was able to catch Avicii’s set at Insomniac’s Nocturnal a couple weeks ago and it was nothing short of spectacular.
BONUS!! Ticket prices for the show have been dropped immensely to just $50 for GA tickets and $150 for VIP!!!
SATURDAY// October 29th
Perhaps the sweetest treat of your Halloween weekend comes in pill form. Sugarpill, master of welding straight sexy with gangsta ishness, constantly lifts the West Coast Bass Movement to new heights. This LA native is touching down in SD Oct. 29th for what is about to be one of the nastiest performances of the year. To see this guy for a pre-sale ticket price of $10 is absolute madness. And get this…If you get SUBversive’s 4 ticket package, the price break gets you or one of your friends in for FREE! Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming posts about this event. Shit’s about to get wiiiiillllldd.

The 11thAnnual Dos Equis XX Monster Bash is taking over downtown with 3 stages and 10 bars. Hypercrush, DJ Vice, and the headliner we’re most excited about, the creator and the father of moombahton, DAVE NADA(!!!) are going to be headlining with many other local fav DJs taking the stage. With thousands of inebriated costume-wearing party goers, what’s not to like? If you’re one of the many of us that like to go all out for Halloween, then you’ll love the $3000 cash prize for the costume competition. Must be at least 21 to party and tickets start at $30. Small price to pay for a night full of drunken debauchery.
MONDAY// October 31st

If you’re still alive after the weekend and still looking to party on Halloween night and you find yourself still in Downtown, definitely cruise down to our favorite hipster hang El Dorado. They’re hosting Disco Bloodbath which is going to be an orgy of local talent. You won’t break the bank going to this party since there is no cover charge and cheap (yet deceptively powerful) drinks all night.

The North Park hipster headquarter U-31 is having a their own show on Halloween with Saul Q and resident DJ Colour Vision. If you’re looking for a laid back vibe with none of the Downtown-centric depravity then I highly recommend this top-notch indie dance party for an undoubtedly good time. The best part: 91 CENT DRINKS ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!!
The double headliner of Minnesota and Vokab Kompany will be bringing the heat to one of San Diego’s finest Halloween night shows— HalloWeird. From complete opposite sides of the musical spectrum, these two will make the crowd groove and go completely bonkers. Minnesota, a personal favorite, had bass and unearthly synths coursing through my body for days after his monster set at Abstract Festival. The Keating Hotel has yet to see and, frankly, feel something this massive. I couldn’t think of a better way to top off an out-of-this-world Halloween weekend.
