Every Wednesday, from now until April 3rd, 2013, twenty-four of East Village San Diego’s stand out local businesses have joined forces to show a bit of appreciation to SD locals! Participating businesses like 5&A DIME, stellar micro brewery Monkey Paw, Dragon’s Den, Bootlegger, just opened Blind Burro, or Hotel Indigo‘s newly remodeled ( & dog-friendly!) rooftop lounge & bar, Level 9, just to name a few, will be offering a 20% off discount off all checks/bills during all open hours to patrons who show proof of residence anywhere within San Diego county lines. So whether you’re in the market (or ON Market St. for that matter!) for top-notch streetwear, spa services, bowling, new kitchen supplies + tools (!), craft beer or local eats, you’re bound to find something to get into at one of these local establishments.
For more info about East Village San Diego, please visit their website to explore what this emerging neighborhood (and not to mention, MY ‘hood of 3+ years!) in Downtown San Diego is all about.

- STRONG drinks, great prices.

Website & Full Menu | TheMixster.com Review
Open: Everyday 12pm-Midnight
- Extensive Craft & local Beer Selection, Vegetarian fare, Gastropub style food, Salads, Food to Share, Pet Friendly Patio
I hadn’t included Neighborhood in years’ past in this guide – simply because it’s one of those places you feel inclined to keep as a secret. It’s really that special. Neighborhood is a well-designed and welcoming space, offering a perfect fusion of tastes for hipster foodies, business people, and come-as-you-are-folks alike. With an every-changing range of beers on tap, not to mention the overwhelming number of beers by the bottle, it is no wonder that beer conessoiurs from all walks of life call Neighborhood their casual cool commonplace. Neighborhood’s fare is just as noteworthy – offering an eclectic and organic gastro-pub selection of elevated & made-to-share bar food & comfort gourmet entrees that help to soak up the endless plethora of craft beer on draft & bottled suds.
The Jalapeño Mac & Cheese is so spicy and incredibly addictive.
Neighborhood’s next-level veggie burger: a Black Bean Burger patty served on a pillowy-soft ciabatta roll with crispy leeks, smoked paprika portobello, swiss cheese, cumin mayo, and pickled yellow chili. It pretty much changes the game.

All burgers are served with Sweet potato or regular skinny fries, along with their addictive Wasabi Aioli. Their happy hour is from 4pm-6pm with specials on food and drinks varying daily; call ahead or check the chalkboard out front for details… FULL REVIEW
-Great after Con spot for a more “out of the scene” friendly nightlife/bar experience.
- Board games keep the young, and the slightly older & buzzed ones, equally entertained.
Gaijin Noodle + Sake House (One block West of the Gaslamp, 5 blocks from Convention Center)
627 4th Ave.
Website & Full Menu
Special Hours During Comic-Con 2012! Tues-Thurs: 11am-1am, Fri & Sat. 11am-3am, Sun: 11am-1am
- Ramen, Yakitori, Sake Snow Cones, Late Night Happy hour, Lunch specials, Free Sake Shots
Without a doubt of the best new additions to San Diego’s Downtown, Gaijin Noodle & Sake House simply does everything RIGHT. The visual aesthetic of the decor was thoughtfully done: creating an atmosphere that’s comfortably chic, but lacking any over-the-top typical Gaslamp cheeze & unnecessary foofy-ness. It allows for their selective offering of appetizers & very simply four noodle dishes be the stars of the show. And that they most certainly are. Personally, I can’t even write this without fantasizing about their dreamy Spicy Miso Chasu Hakata Ramen - lovely strands of Hakata Ramen & Honshemeji mushrooms swim in an incredibly rich broth with a total-palette-storming array of luscious flavors and a perfect touch of spice. Stick around for a while and every half-hour or so, you will be treated to a complimentary shot of house sake as part of their restaurant-wide toast at the hit of the gong.
- Sake-infused SNOW CONES. You heard me right. They even hand-shave the ice to order.
-Not into Noodles? Gaijin also serves up a very meaty selection of fresh seared Yakitori selections such as Brandy Beef Skirt Steak and absolutely MIND-BLOWINGLY good Nueske Bacon-Wrapped Jumbo Asparagus a la carte.
- #SDCC COMIC-CON LUNCH SPECIALS & special hours! Tues-Thurs: 11am-1am, Fri & Sat. 11am-3am, Sun: 11am-1am
Website + Full Menu || TheMixster.com Review
Open: Daily 11am-1am
- Late Night Sushi Dining, Lunch Specials, Happy hour (Food & Drink Specials 4-7pm Everyday), Pet-Friendly Outdoor Seating
The Dragon’s Den, a relatively new establishment fixated in the heart of East Village across from Petco Park, has quickly become the hip new haunt for locals. Catering to all patrons across the board, The Dragon’s Den features an extensive menu, with small bites, a fresh selection of well-stocked items from the sushi bar & specialty rolls, family-sized portions, and a full bar served in either the more nightlife-savvy, plasma-TV plastered lounge/bar area, pet-friendly outdoor heated patio, or in the family dining room. Happy hour is served weekdays everyday 4pm-7pm, allowing patrons “ballin on a budget” to sip stiff well cocktails or to nibble on finely-crafted sushi combinations or Salt & Pepper Calamari and indulge in sinful cocktail concoctions around the bar, while DJs spin deep house/lounge set the social vibe.
-Don’t miss the Spicy Scallop handroll. Soooooo deeee vineeee.
- Feeling muy espicy? Ask for the Pork-Stuffed Jalapeños – The Den’s über secret about them because they’re unbelievably uhhhmazing.
Burger Lounge (On 5th/In the Gaslamp, Approx 4 blocks from Convention Center)
528 5th Avenue
Website & Full Menu
Open: M-Th: 10:30am to 11:00pm; Fri & Sat: 10:30am to 3:00am; Sunday: 10:30am to 10:00pm
- Open Late, Local craft beer selections, Pet-Friendly outside seating, the most amazing veggie burger in the history of ever.
Burger Lounge. The menu is small, featuring only 4 different types of burgers, a handful of salads, and a selection of either French Fries or Onion Rings as a side. But everything is AMAZING. Serving only Grass-fed beef, Free range turkey, and Organic cheese, they certainly make up for their small selection with incredibly quality ingredients and intensely fresh flavor. Their Quinoa Veggie Burger – is personally the best veggie burger I have ever had. The immensely addictive Quinoa based patty is cooked perfectly crispy on the outside, topped with a choice of either Yellow or White cheddar, grilled or sliced onions, lettuce, tomato, house-made Thousand island, and served on a fresh baked bun. Paired with always cheery and friendly service, Burger Lounge is indeed a spot worth supporting, and perhaps even obsessing over endlessly.
-The Downtown location just got their beer license, so indulge in a pint of one of the local beers on draft!
-Their kitchen is open til 3am on weekends
-Their location right-smack in the middle of the Gaslamp & their Pet-friendly front patio is PERFECT for Comic-Con people watching.
SMASHBURGER (On Market Street: Approx 5 blocks Southwest from Convention Center)
801 Market Street, San Diego
Website + Full Menu|| TheMixster.com Review
Open: 10am-10pm Daily
Breakfast sandwiches, Huge Menu, Healthy Options, Kid-friendly, Pet-friendly Outdoor Seating.
What isn’t there to love about Smashburger? Choose from either their 1/2 or 1/3 lb. 100% Angus Beef patties or a Smashchicken sandwich and go wild with their extensive menu featuring all kinds of everything-you’d-want-between-a-bun delights and delish add-ons! A healthy selection of salads also help make choosing healthy options a breeze! Sides like the Smashfries – tossed in rosemary, olive oil and garlic – or the Haystack Onions or the Fried Pickles with buttermilk ranch dressing, make great accompaniments to any Smash-selection. And their Downtown location is the only one to serve breakfast so rev up in the morning and get your day smashing!
- The Baja Smashburger or Smashchicken pack some hot hot heat and come with guacamole. Win.
- Häagen-Dazs Milkshakes are top notch indulgences.
- Their morning coffee from Cafe Virtuoso is absolutely smashing.

Warner Bros. Presents: Extra at Comic Con
Couldn’t get into Comic-Con but still want to enjoy the fun? Thank God for major studios expanding beyond the convention center and giving everyone an opportunity to catch the madness! For the first time ever, Warner Bros. Entertainment will present Extra at Comic-Con®, a free outdoor entertainment festival happening in San Diego’s Bayfront Park July 12–14. Bayfront Park is located between the San Diego Convention Center and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel. Bringing back the spirit of creativity in comics, animation, graphic design, fine art and more, Tr!ckster is back and taking over Wine Steals/Proper in East Village (795 J Street – next to the ballpark)! Their mission? To promote creator-owned art, a feature of Comic-Con that seems to have been lost in the shuffle of recent popularity. The shop is free and open to the public w/events and signings throughout the week.
In addition to the pop-up shop is Tr!ckster Symposia, a series of creative workshop discussion groups held twice a day, Thursday through Saturday. This is no ordinary sit-down panel – expect to be fully engaged in discussions and debates about film, comics, and art. And for you alcohol lovers out there, wine will be readily available! For ticket and schedule info, visit the Tr!ckster Symposia website.
Zombie Walk: San Diego
Oozing wounds, rotting body parts, and a taste for brains – who doesn’t love dressing up as the undead and scaring off the living?! 2012 marks the 6th year of Zombie Walk: San Diego at Comic-Con, and trust that this Zombie Walk will be one to remember! With each walk, the number of zombie attendees increases – and one can only imagine what horrifying presence they will bring to the Gaslamp Quarter this year! Scroll onto the parties in this post for more info on the after party at Voyeur!
The Walking Dead Escape
In all seriousness – what would you do during a zombie apocalypse? Would you run? Would you seek higher ground? Do you think you’d be prepared for a world overrun by zombies? Find out at The Walking Dead Escape – quite possibly the most exciting and terrifying offsite event this year at #SDCC! Zombies will invade San Diego’s Petco Park for 3 days, and you have the option of becoming a survivor, walker, or spectator. Survivors get to navigate through the extensive obstacle course (complete w/FEMA resupply depot!), walkers become the undead, and spectators get to party and watch the devastation (think if Hunger Games were about zombies). Tickets are rather pricey, but well worth it! For tickets, information, and to see the obstacle course – check out their website.
Just a few blocks away from the famous Comic-Con is Gam3rCon! Held at the 10th Ave Theater, Gam3rCon is a great alternative for those who are more about gaming (from video games to traditional card games) or for those who were not quick enough to snag Comic-Con passes! Gam3rCon has all the essentials: exhibitors, panels, parties, and even live theater. Visit the Gam3rCon website for more information on registration!

Ailments; and the lovely rockers Her Crimson Love (the headliners of the night). They’re ready to have a good time, and they want you to have a good time w/them! Which brings me to another band that is ready to party with you! If you haven’t already figured it out, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (aka McLovin) will be at the Griffin, performing w/his band The Young Rapscallions! Common courtesy would be to go to this show w/good musical intentions, not because of celebrity fame… but come on! Who wouldn’t be curious to see McLovin’ on the drums? But seriously, come support San Diego talent and check this show out. McLovin’ is the pop culture icing on the cake.

If you’re looking for a comic industry party, head over to the Haunted Hotel for “Heavy Metal” magazine’s 35th Anniversary Celebration, presented by Versus World and Dig Deep Entertainment. This party is going to get weird – but what would you expect from the inside of San Diego’s Haunted Hotel? In addition to the Comic Con party standards (dancers and cosplayers) keep your eyes peeled for sideshow talent and little people roaming about the hotel! Creature cocktails, a Coffin Case giveaway (for your guitar), and special surprise guests are also to be expected. This is an “invite only” party – but if you’re really into science fiction and fantasy, “like” Dig Deep Enterntainment and see how you can get involved (or if they’ll let you in on the guestlist)!

Kicking off Comic Con w/style is VH1 Classic‘s first ever Official Comic-Con Attendee Welcome Party: “Dawn of the Con.” This event is free but is EXCLUSIVE to Comic-Con badge holding attendees only. IHEARTCOMIX + SPIN MAGAZINE Present: ANDREW WK (full band) + Peanut Butter Wolf + HOTTUB + Alexander Spit + Franki Chan
21+; 8PM at 4th&B
COST: $22 adv
Once upon a time, before Comic Con was insanely huge, I would attempt cosplaying as a Suicide Girl in the hopes of getting into parties for free. I think this plan only worked once. These days I leave cosplaying to the professionals – but when a huge party featuring Andrew WK, Peanut Butter Wolf, Hottub, Alexander Spit, and Franki Chan shows up to town AND there is a cosplay contest involved, you know I am down for it! This party is already set to get crazy (if you’ve never been to a IHEARTCOMIX Comic Con party – y’all be trippin’ balls), showing up in full on Stormtrooper, Disney Princess, Avatar (The Last Airbender or James Cameron alien) only seems appropriate! In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Meltdown Comics, Bubble Punch, and yes – the Suicide Girls will be hosting a cosplay contest at the IHEARTCOMIX + SPIN party. So if you aren’t going to be participating in the masqurade over at #SDCC, make your way over to the IHEARTCOMIX + SPIN party. You already know the music will be a million times better! BUY TICKETS
Comedy Central Present’s: Workaholics Happy Hour

I don’t know what kind of party this will be – but if it’s related to Workaholics, than it better be a rager complete w/Juggalos and Blake stripping out of a cop uniform! I also expect good drink specials – none of this “Comic Con Inflation Price” bullshit. Don’t call it a happy hour if it isn’t! ANYWAY – if you are a fan of Workaholics, get to Hard Rock’s FLOAT by 2pm! This event is free to anyone 21+, so it will most likely fill up! First come first serve, and remember: “… If you don’t sweat in your crack, you’re not doing it right!”

Comic Con Odd Ball Party
7pm at JSix (rooftop of Hotel Solamar)
The event info claims that this party will be open to the public for the first time, which makes me wonder – is Syfy and Entertainment Weekly not having a party at JSix this year? Or have they bandwagon-ed the “Friday the 13th” Party Train? Either way, if you’re down for drinks and chilling w/other Comic Con odd balls, come check this party out! No lines, no cover, no pretense! Visit the JSix site for more details!
SUNDAY, JULY 15TH
6pm at Whiskey Girl
COST: $5 Donation suggested
When it comes to Comic Con after parties, there really aren’t any. Most of Hollywood has gone home, tourists are spent and want a chance to relax on the last day, and jaded locals impatiently wait to take back their city from the madness. But for those of you who want one last hurrah, there is the Comic-Concert! Celebrate surviving another year at the Con by listening to a night of geek rock at The Whiskey Girl. Live performances include zombie and Power Ranger favorites from Random Gibberish – and apparently there will be a SUPER SECRET MYSTERY BAND performing! I have no clue as to who this could possibly be, but if you’re looking to party with other pop culture enthusiasts on the final day of Comic Con, Comic-Concert is the place to be. For more info, please visit their FB invite page.
KEEP CHECKING BACK – We will be updating this guide as more event announcements are released!!!!
San Diego Comic-Con International 2012 Events listing & #SDCC after parties
Visitors and locals alike, should experience the best of San Diego’s classic cocktails. We’ve been fortunate enough to have a flourishing movement of craft-concocting mastery grace our lovely city in the past couple years, and thus we find no reason not to celebrate San Diego’s fresh and plentiful offerings of an exquisite and time-honored taste. Slink in and stay a while, at any one of these top-notch fine and crafty establishments.
Insiders Only: The Noble Experiment
(Very Close to Gaslamp/Downtown)
777 G. St
San Diego, CA, 92101
Plan ahead: because this hidden away escape from the bells and whistles of the Gaslamp’s bright lights is no longer a secret and its 20-something capacity fills up with reservations fast. Don’t even think about pulling a “walk-in”– a night at Noble Experiment is a serious affair, and it should be treated as such.
For the classic, sophisticated, yet cozy ambiance of one of the chicest new additions to San Diego’s roster of tastemakers’ approved establishments, The Noble Experiment offers up an ever-changing list of classic concoctions served with only the highest caliber of liquors, ingredients, and with the utmost thoughtful precision. Don’t even get me started on their curious obsession with perfectly, impeccable ice. For the best cocktail in town, plan ahead, and don’t miss this spot.

Off the Beaten Path Beauty: Starlite Lounge
($8 cab ride from Downtown San Diego)
3175 India Street
San Diego, CA 92103
Open Mon-Sat 5 pm-2 am; Fri 4pm-2am; Sun 6 pm-2 am
If you happen to be by Little Italy or Downtown San Diego, you are merely a short hop and a skip away from a spot that has been beloved by San Diegans since 2007, Starlite Lounge: A gorgeous retro beauty nestled in Mission Hills that beyond its farm-to-table fare served until midnight daily, its fabulous interior, and whimsically “starlit” outdoor patio, Starlite serves up arguably the city’s best Mule. A concoction of Rain Organic Vodka, Ginger beer, and Angostura bitters topped off with a lime in their signature copper cup, it’s a loaded vessel that will likely put you on your bum if you dare doubt its potency.
If you choose to dabble beyond the Mule, I’d point you in the direction of the Gunga Din, made with Montecristo 12-year aged rum, cold Earl Grey, cardamon syrup, lemon and a dash of mint. If you’re a real brute or just looking for a potent slap in the face, try the Kentucky Colonel, made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, ginger beer, lemon, and a dash of house made cherry vanilla bitters for a quick as a lick lullaby into no recollection of last night land…

Beyond the Bar: Whisknladle
(La Jolla Area)
1044 Wall Street
La Jolla, CA 92037
Open for Brunch on Weekends
Farm to Table Fare
Covered Outdoor Seating
Happy Hour Daily 5:00-7:00pm (bar area) info
Whisknladle is one of those rare establishments that has never disappointed me. It very well could be the very “jewel” of La Jolla’s namesake and long-standing reputation as one of San Diego’s most picturesque locales, for both locals and tourists alike. Amidst La Jolla’s Downtown area, you’ll find Whisknladle quietly nestled in, just a block or two off the beaten path and away from the gourmet shops and boutiques.
Beyond just their thoughtful and impeccably prepared farm-to-table selections, the handcrafted cocktails also beckon note for their exemplary palatable achievements, and they, too, deserve their own glimmer in the spotlight as well.
Concoctions such as the Tamarind Margarita, with Chinese Five-Spice, Orange and infused-Tequila or The Julian, with cinnamon-infused bourbon, rosemary, and cider are sure-fire libations that will warm your insides. Less fiery vessels such as the Lavendar Cosmo with Blueberry & Lavender infused vodka, white cran & blueberry will brighten the senses. But fair warning if you chose to order the Passion Fruit Vanilla Mimosa: you may want to opt for the pitcher to share as surely your thirsty mates will want more than just one sweet sip.

Grooves and Booze: El Dorado Cocktail Lounge
(Close to Gaslamp/Downtown)
San Diego, CA 92101
Live Music: Electro; Indie; Underground Hip Hop
Happy Hour Specials
While the decor may be a bit on the quirkier side, you can always depend on the vibe, the service, and of course, the concoctions, to always be absolutely on point at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge. East Village’s prime scenester locale also happens to be one of the city’s founding fathers of our explosive craft cocktail movement: True to their interior’s “Gold Rush” theme, the El Dorado staff is adorned in era-appropriate attire with a modern twist, yet their strict technique in crafting the perfect cocktail has and will always remain uncompromisable, despite the large and demanding crowds that flock to EL D every Friday and Saturday night.
While El Dorado changes up its menu and celebrates its release seasonally, tried and true classics never seem to slip away: You’ll never see any lack of the Moscow Mule, served in a Mason Jar and topped with a lime and twisted Mint leaf across the bar, while the Oaxaca Old-Fashioned is reserved only for those true connoisseurs whose tolerance can stand up to its smoky, sensory-arousing allure — and its not so secret sneaky affects.

In a city sprinkled with commercialism, finding that perfect independent coffee shop can be a little daunting. You want atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, excellent service, and of course – a delicious cup of Joe. While we aren’t exactly Seattle or San Francisco, we do have a few gems. Luckily for you, quite a few new establishments have popped up in our fair city, providing coffee lovers and Wi-Fi seekers options that do not involve that familiar circular, green logo.
Coffee Junkie: Ryan Bros Coffee
1894 Main St
San Diego, CA 92113
5 min away from Downtown San Diego
Cafe and Roastery
Hours: Mon-Fri (5:30am-5:30pm) Sat (7:30am-4pm) Sun (9am-2pm)
Literally 5 minutes away from the Gaslamp, Ryan Bros Coffee in Barrio Logan is the spot for the ultimate coffee lover. With an extensive menu filled with blends, espressos, cocoas, and specialty drinks, Ryan Bros Coffee has a drink to fit whatever mood you are in. A popular drink for those on the go and in need of a chocolate fix is the Cafe Mocha with Mexican Cocoa (also available in European and White Night). Let me tell you, the aroma of the Cafe Mocha was absolutely delightful and I am happy it was the drink recommended to me.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Ryan Bros Coffee is that it is not a mere coffee shop, but it is a true roastery. Think like a brewery, but for coffee. Situated towards the back of the building is where Ryan Bros roasts their own beans. Your coffee will always be fresh, and once they have your taste buds hooked, you can purchase those same beans for your own personal use. Best of all? All of their coffee is fair trade.
The building housing this coffee heaven is positively urban and spacious with its brick walls and beamed ceilings. Far from being a dingy warehouse in the Barrio, Ryan Bros Coffee is perfect for grabbing an early morning drink or stopping by for lunch. They do have free Wi-Fi for the laptop inclined, however it is not the spot for hours of study. It’s definitely more of a place to socialize with friends, family, and co-workers.
Tip: If you aren’t a coffee goer but your friends are, try one of their iced tea cocktails. I hear they are to die for!
Home Away from Home: Lestat’s on Park
4496 Park Blvd
San Diego, CA 92116
7-10 min from downtown San Diego
Hours: Soon to be 24hrs – keep checking back
Formerly known as that coffee bar in University Heights with the huge mural of a cleavage bearing chick, Cream Coffee Bar was bought out by Lestat’s and re-christened as Lestat’s on Park. The previous bleak cafeteria look of Cream has since been replaced with new wallpaper, comfy chairs, and dark wood furniture. The entire atmosphere has changed to that of a private study made for a cultured and savvy person in a smoking jacket.
Much of Cream’s menu remains the same with the addition of the ol’ Lestat’s spin, but it isn’t so much the coffee I enjoy most about this place. Aside from the atmosphere, the best feature of Lestat’s on Park is that it is laptop friendly. Not only is the middle portion of the shop sectioned off for those in search of quiet work time, the place is abundant in outlets. Power strips line the walls so that you are never at a loss for power.
Lestat’s on Park is open late, so those insomniac hours of study may be spent here. It is said that this location will also become a 24hr shop, just like the original Lestat’s in Normal Heights. For now Lestat’s on Park closes at midnight – so be sure to check back for complete hours.
Sweet Tooth Binge: Cafe Venti
4681 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 92111
11-15 min from downtown San Diego
Meal portion of the menu served after 6pm. Waffles, yogurt, and shaved ice served all day.
Beer on tap and soju also available
Hours: Close at 11pm weekdays, call for complete hours
Cafe Venti, despite it’s Italian name, is not what you would expect it to be. Instead of Italian coffees, you are more likely to find the Asian variety of milk teas. Instead of parents seeking paninis for lunch, you’ll find people requesting the drool-worthy Waffle Yo. And instead of soothing acoustic tunes, you’ll both see and hear sugary sweet K-Pop music videos on the flat screen TVs set throughout the shop. Complete with doorbells on the tables to gain the attention of the waiters and waitresses, Cafe Venti is a K-Town experience away from K-Town.
If fixing your sweet tooth cravings is what you are after, Cafe Venti will be sweet to all five of your senses. As previously mentioned, the Waffle Yo is extremely popular – and it’s hard to deny it as the aroma wafts through out the shop as soon as it is ordered. A fresh waffle is prepared just for you, topped with a large helping of frozen yogurt, and surrounded by generous amounts of kiwi, strawberries, and pineapples. Finish off with one of their specialty lattes – Lava Latte (white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate blend), Oreo Latte, or Green Tea Latte – and you’ll be hurting for the dentist! Cafe Venti is not exactly laptop friendly, but the plus side is that the wi-fi is protected and not hogged by nerds playing Starcraft or watching movies online (like many of the other coffee and tea shops within this area).
Tip: Request to sit at the Christmas lit patio (yes, year round) and you will be treated to a fresh Snuggie! Yes! They give you Snuggies to wear out on the patio!!!!
Also Try: Filter
1295 University Ave
San Diego, CA 92103
Open 24 Hours
If you’ve been to Filter in North Park, you’re in for a treat at the new location right in the heart of Hillcrest. We have not visited this location yet, but there has been nothing but positive buzz about this new spot. Open 24hrs, Filter in Hillcrest is said to be a lot more spacious. You can practically see right through the coffee shop as it appears virtually “wall-less,” a plus for many of the day-goers who love natural light.
750 West Fir
San Diego, CA 92101
Hours: 6am-9pm Everyday
San Diego, CA
Influx Cafe isn’t quite like your stereotypical “coffee house“: Owner Jason Twilla wanted the design of Influx’s second location to be reflective of term “Influx” itself: An all-encompassing “sphere; “spacey” with a sense of meaning; welcoming an overflow of positive energy and an abundance of light. Influx is located in Little Italy’s new, likely-to-become the social epicenter of the neighborhood, building, the Q - whose gorgeous and innovative design has Jonathan Segal to thank. Segal brought to life his own envisions of a building reflecting a perceptiveness and sensitivity to space, and a thoughtful sense of “openness”. Thus, Influx’s new locale couldn’t be more perfectly suited to Twilla’s own vision.
The space reflects a sense of order: Clean lines, great natural light, modern decor – no mismatched pillows nor knapsacks here. No matter where you sit at Influx, you can see everything: Far and away from your usual dark, nook-y, and eclectic coffee joint. Yet despite their lack of “trying to be indie” efforts, Influx is relaxing and cozy in its own right: A cool breeze runs through the spot, whether you’re inside and out. Comfy cushioned booth or bench seating line nearly all walls. The outdoor seating is thoughtfully arranged and uncongested…

My obsession with cupcakes has forced me to embark on an extensive journey through San Diego’s cupcake landscape. I’ve traveled through this city seeking out the “Holy Grail of cupcakes,” the knocks-me-off-my-feet, takes-my-breath-away, leaves-me-speechless kind of cupcake, that I’m constantly seeking. I just have two conditions when it comes to finding this perfect cupcake: Number One-It must be vanilla. Call me boring, but there’s nothing that compares to the subtle yet deliciously sweet taste I’ve known my whole life and, thus, have never felt compelled to diverge from. Number Two-I must also have a giant glass of ice cold milk. Yes, I know I’m like a five year-old, but take my word for it, there really is no better way to enjoy a cupcake. I also kind of have a thing for rainbow sprinkles… They’re so cute and tasty, I can’t resist a cupcake delicately covered with those little guys! So I’ve scoured San Diego, venturing everywhere from Solana Beach to the Gaslamp, tasting the signature vanilla cupcake at each venue. Below I have compiled and manicured this list of my faves, along with a few extra pounds I really didn’t need..

I feel like the title is self-explanatory.
1. HARVARD BASS + Anthony Attalla at the W Hotel
From personal experience, I am 100% convinced this will be an amazing party. We were asked to host an ALL locals NYE party W Hotel wide last year, and honest to G it is still in my mind one of the coolest parties I have ever done. This year, they’ve bolstered the roster up a B-I-G notch, featuring SD’s hometown hero HARVARD BASS and Anthony Attalla.
Harvard Bass has thrown down some epic performances this year, and just last week at El Dorado he threw down an off-the-wall party-jam laden set that totally lit the place up and quickly facilitated the knocking back of gratuitous amounts of drinks. I have no doubt Harvard Bass will shut down the old year and ring in the new year the right away. And if it’s anything like it was last year, The W Hotel certainly won’t throw an anything less than stellar shindig. Pricey, but worth it. $80.
PRO MIX TIP: DEFINITELY GET A HOTEL ROOM. Trying to find a taxi home from Little Italy on NYE is an absolute NIGHTMARE. And the rooms were made for after parties… Search Hotel Rates Here
2. TIMEWAVE ZERO feat. EPROM + EshOne + Mike Gao + More at Kava Lounge
SD’s beats scene and the corresponding local artists have been rapidly gaining attention, and thus the heavyweights of the scene SUBLMNL, LIQUID GEOMETRY, and DATASET are coming together and throwing a massive end-of-the-year SHUT DOWN party. SF’s EPROM will be headlining the evening, and good homie of TheMixster.com, EshOne (aka DON VALDEZ) will be high-tailing it from ABQ to ring in the New Year with rumored exclusives-just-for-the-evening: a collection of ball-dropping, sticky-floor-inducing countdown closers. Other not-to-miss sets of the evening from Mike Gao, HMT DMT and Misk will certainly be worth every penny of the thrifty $15 presale $20 ticket.
That not enough to convince you? Then check THIS baybay out:

3. El Dorado’s ROARING NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
Of course, El Dorado is going to have an amazing NYE party. I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t. The optional theme of “1920s Flapper attire” is a great excuse to feed that empty space in my heart left by the season finale of “Boardwalk Empire” and trusted locals The Office Twins, Groundfloor, Adam Salter, and Blancnoire will be behind the decks. If you RSVP & arrive before 10:30pm entry is only $10! And bottles of champagne are only $25 a pop (pun!) all night long. A sure fire win all around
More Info & RSVP here
4. LED PRESENTS: OMFG! At SD Sports Arena.
On NYE I personally opt for the more intimate family and friends inside neighborhood bar dance parties. However, the line-up as always for LED PRESENTS’ NYE bash is resoundingly epic, and if you have the heart to brave the rave this NYE, I would without a doubt point you this very direction. It’s San Diego’s own Wonderland, TAO/ whatever else is going on in LA experience, conveniently being held just 10 minutes away from Downtown SD. 18+/21+ to booze. $75-$150. 21+ Ticket price includes entry to 5am NYD party at Voyeur.
Buy Tickets Here.
5. GET SEXUAL w/ EVOL INTENT + REID SPEED + GRIDLOK at Brick by Brick
This is without a doubt the best DnB party happening in ALL of California on NYE. The line-up couldn’t be more stacked with massive names from all over the bass music realm including Gridlok, EVOL INTENT, Reid Speed, along with SD’s own trusted inner circle of local jungle heads. And the price is right entry wise $25 so if DnB is your steeze, this is 100% where you will want to be NYE. Party goes til 3AM and there will be hosted well drinks & beer from 9pm-10pm.
Buy Presale Tickets
5. BALLIN OUTTA TOWN– Snow Globe Festival
At this very moment in time, I am still kicking myself for not going to this. Had the transportation options from San Diego been somewhat less nightmarish and complicated I would be at Snow Globe Festival in an absolute HEARTBEAT. The line-up for the 3 day festival taking place in South Lake Tahoe is brilliant, fresh, essentially, the top-notch peak of the gold standard. Our friends at BLAP Productions are throwing an after party after each night of the festival, each with incredible (and obviously envy-inducing) line-ups of their own. Tickets are $150 for all three days, hotel rates are reasonable, and the experience we can only predict, will have the rest of us kicking ourselves for the rest of the year. FUCK.
Buy Tickets Here
There’s an option for NYE that fits anyone’s budget and we know any party that’s made our short list, will certainly not disappoint. Follow us on Twitter, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on after parties/NYD party action cuz we’ll no doubt be dawn-lurking about with the rest of you crackheads.
Happy New Year Mixsters!!!
