Last night was like any other Wednesday night: Browsing the internet on my laptop and checking Facebook on my phone at the same time. Once I realized how ridiculous this was, I casually looked around to make sure no one saw. Sadly, this is far from the first time this has happened. My technological A.D.D. isn’t limited to social media networking either. My inclination to spend copious amounts of time messing around on my phone and computer also extends itself into music software. With that, I thought I’d direct your attention to a handful of proper music apps that we believe have proven themselves worthy of their price tag.

iMashine – $4.99 (Apple’s App store only)

This app basically condenses the Maschine from Native Instruments into a nifty app. iMaschine is a fun, easy-to-learn beat studio in your pocket. It consists of 4 groups that can any combination of 16 -spot beat pads, keyboard, or audio recording. It comes with 400 individual samples which can be easily added to by either recording your own or buying expansions in the app store. I love this app! It’s a great time killer and really makes me want to upgrade to getting an actual Maschine. With Christmas right around the corner, Native Instruments’ ploy might just have worked on me.

Tap DJ – $0.99 (Apple’s App store only)

Tap DJ makes it easy to mix music from your own iPod library on the go. Whether you’re a pro or like me… lacking in musical skill or any where in between, this app is for you. Looping takes a only seconds to learn (admittedly longer to master). You can even record and share your own live mixes with the built in features. You’ll be the king or queen of the speaker system on your next road trip.

Ultimate Guitar Tabs – $2.99 (Android and Apple)

For all guitar and bass players out there: YOU NEED TO GET THIS APP. The $3 this will set you back is completely justified when you realize how useful it is to be able to search Ultimate Guitars gigantic tab library on the fly. Want to learn the latest crappy Bruno Mars song? Me neither, but it might come in handy if you’re trying to woo a group of young ladies. Yes….. a group of ladies. It is easy to create your own playbook by saving songs to your favorites. The app even comes with tab packs that are sorted by genre and level of difficulty, so even if you don’t know what song you want to play you’ll find something worth playing.

Bonus: Virtual DJ: Free DJing software for the computer that packs a considerable amount of power.

This wasn’t my first trip to the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, but it was certainly the best. Since its inception in 2008, the festival has grown immensely, attracting food junkies, die-hard music fans, wine connoisseurs, artists, and everything in-between. Yet while the people of Outside Lands are each amazingly unique, it is the location that truly separates this gathering from anything else. No festival experience can compare to this harmonious gathering in Golden Gate Park, so describing it to someone who’s never been is almost impossible since they can’t experience the same sights, smells, and sounds; but here goes my best attempt.

You’ve all seen the pictures we’ve been featuring on the Facebook page, but what goes into making each shot? A picture is worth a thousand words, but there is so much that you miss from a festival or a concert by sitting at your desk and scrolling through a photo album. That’s why I’m starting something new on the site. Behind the Lens gives you, our beloved readers, an inside look at what happened before, during, and after a show. From the pre-party to the after-party. From the moment you tilt your head back to take a shot to the hours you spend bent over the porcelain god. The ultimate goal is a more comprehensive festival coverage, with nothing but honest opinions and stories of things that were either hidden from the camera, pictures that were just too crazy to post on Facebook, or snapshots that just need a little further extra explanation.

Sun God Festival at UCSD

A couple weeks ago was my first trip to the Sun God Festival at UCSD. With a sick lineup (HUGE for a college campus in San Diego), some nice cool weather, a press pass in hand, and no shortage of Asian students, I knew it would be a day worth remembering. Damn was that an understatement. Sun God was the BEST festival I’ve ever been to! I can’t thank UCSD’s ASCE enough for throwing one of the most massive college events to end the year with a bang. With three huge stages hosting a wide-range of genres and out-of-this-world talent, I will NOT miss this festival next year. The most amazing thing was how massive the festival was, yet how intimate it felt. You’d think that hundreds to thousands of college students from local colleges would just jumble together, but I couldn’t stop running into people I knew. And when you’re meeting tons of new people your age, but hanging out with your old friends at the same time, you can’t not have a good time.

Before the music came on and the dancing began, we had to pre-game of course (we are college students after all). This is where the dirty girl scouts and a gorilla come in. A “Dirty Girl Scout” is a shot; first you get on your knees and have someone fill your mouth with chocolate syrup, then you have someone pour peppermint schnapps in your mouth, then you swish. Voilá, the taste of a Thin Mint! The only hard part is staying sober enough to take pictures…

It’s just the beginning of the new year, did you Mixsters think your gift giving was over? How wrong you are my friends, how wrong you are! While buying your favorite hangover concoctions at your local drug or grocery store, I’m sure you’ve noticed that all the holiday items have been replaced by bright red and pink Valentine’s Day cards and balloons. When a blogger is bored, they turn to Twitter. And so with boredom, provoked our call-to-order for the best Fuck Jams (#fuckjams) across the EDM sphere via our Twitter and Facebook Fan Page. And let’s just say our fans feel VERY strongly about their fuck jams.

We received an enormous response across the board, but one especially spunky enthusiast, an individual we refer to in the scene as the almighty “Vanilla Guerilla”, rose to the occasion. VG not only contributed enough tracks to make even nymphos shy away, but who also generously took the time to give the most carnal tracks we curated a little extra special attention. Careful, a few of these salacious sounds, are powerful aural aphrodisiacs, it’s best to enjoy these in the comfort of your own private chambre.

Read on for VG’s round-up of the very best electronic fuck jams

Because I know you all can’t think JingleStep is as funny as I do. Here’s for the serious carolers: Killer Christmas covers and new tunes sung some of the most gorgeous voices inside (and outside…) the indie world.

Florence & the Machine - “Last Christmas”
This cover of George Michael’s “Last Christmas” is soulful as it is melodically pristine.

Ha so it’s very apparent that Sufjan Stevens is quite the Christmas enthusiast: he’s released a Christmas EP every year for the last FIVE years (which are now available as a box set!). On BBC Radio 6, Stevens, alongside The National’s Bryce & Aaron Dessner, and Arcade Fire’s Richard Perry debuted two new Christmas jingles: A beautiful and melodically-layered rework of “Silent Night” as well as a new track called ““Barcarola (You Must Be A Christmas Tree)”.

Spank Rock + Johnny Sierra (The Death Set)-
Little Drummer Boy
Spank Rock and Johnny Sierra of The Death Set parody the supremely awkward Bing Crosby and David Bowie video – where they discuss music and Christmas and then break out into a totally weird duet version of “Little Drummer Boy“. Total crack-up haha.

Best Coast and Wavves -“Got Something for You”
Not gonna lie this is a pretty catchy little hipster ditty.

Too be honest with you – I’m not very big on video games. Unless it is of the 8-bit variety, I’m not going to geek out over the latest game releases. However in recent years, game developers have been taping into a new market – my market: the PARTY market: Interactive video games involving dance and music have been popping up like zits on a pre-teen adolescent – and I’m sure you’ve taken notice!

Alright you DJs and dancers, before you step in with the “It’s NOTHING like DJing/actual choreography!” let me say, well duh. It’s a video game! Playing Guitar Hero is obviously not like playing an actual guitar, but these interactive music games have swept the world and stolen the hearts of many lushes and drunks in need of something to do other than play beer pong. Click on to read which games you should be trying your hands… and vocal chords, and bodies at!
