So I made this guide last year for all the COMIC CON festivities but we’ve decided to give our original guide, a nice 2011 reflip, incorporating more foodie goodness within just a hop and skip (and mere blocks away) from the Convention Center to satisfy all those cravings…

SO love Comic Con, but hate waiting in enormous lines and spending wayyyy too much money on mediocre food inside the Convention Center? Of course you do: We do too.
SO here’s a little treat that may be right up your alley: Leave the convention center, and go explore, without having to stray too far from the geek-o-sphere or having to move your car out of that nice and expensive premium parking spot you paid good money for: Our favorite spots are literally a hop and a skip away from Twlight wonderland!

Upscale/Corporate Dining

For those looking for the memorable and impressive upscale dining experience right in the heart of all the action.

If you’re looking for a meal that will undoubtedly leave an impression on your guests, Nobu is the only upscale locale that is guaranteed to impress any table, that has a bit of extra coin to drop. Sure the restaurant is expensive; but with world class cuisine, the world’s most elite sushi chefs, fish flown in whole daily to be masterfully prepared in house or even served still live to adventurous patrons, and their unmatched, impeccable service, it is money well spent for a genuinely, memorable experience.
Tips:
-*MAKE RESERVATIONS*
- Open for Lunch & Dinner
- It’s tradition at ALL Nobu restaurants to start with the Yellowtail Jalapeño. It’s delicious, worth every penny, and it would be rude not to.
- King Crab Tempura w/ Amazu Ponzu is to die for.
-
ALL Desserts are made in house daily — ask your server to create a custom dessert platter to get the best the house has to offer.
- Every Server is a Serious Foodie — Let them Prepare the menu for you, they never fail to impress*.
*Skip the “World Famous” “Black Cod w/ Miso in Lettuce Cups”. Black Cod isn’t caught locally (therefore not freshest available offering) and it’s a horrible and unpleasant-tasting dish. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.

Tips:
- MAKE RESERVATIONS
- The Swordfish with dried cherries and almonds is Malarkey’s specialty dish. If in doubt, this dish is an absolute winner every time.

Website & Full Menu

Open: 5PM Daily
-Upscale Italian Cuisine, Extensive Wine List, Full Bar, Perfect Pastas, Cheese & Salumi Bar*, Happy Hour (5pm-7pm) Elegant yet Social Atmosphere.
Everything at BICE Ristorante is absolutely-to-die-for. Fresh Pastas tossed in beautiful & expertly prepared sauces. Bowls filled with gorgeously tender Calamari rings that have been spared from the typical breaded and fried doom and instead have been lusciously bathed in fragrant broths and paired with fresh and crunchy bread. A special bar designated exclusively for Formaggi e Salumi (Cheese & Cured Meats) with an array of tempting and smoldering gourmet cheeses and so very delicately-sliced charcuterie makes me weak in the knees just at the very thought.
To top with a wine selection that cannot be surpassed, and served at the most perfect temperature, BICE is the Gaslamp’s gem of exquisite Italian Cuisine.
Tips:
- Happy Hour is from 5pm-7pm daily with an extensive menu of tempting $5 offerings. Mussels in a white wine, garlic and parsley broth are consistent winners.
- Special Wine and Cheese flight offered exclusively at the Formaggi e Salumi bar . (Also, 5pm-7pm daily)
- GET THE HOMEMADE BUFALA MOZZARELLA — it’s made fresh daily, and it is stunning.

Once things get busy, the kitchen gets flustered easily; order ahead of time with your waitress to ensure the night goes smoothly. The Hot Pots are deliciously bursting with bright flavors and these tantalizing concoctions, served over fluffy clusters of Jasmine rice, are perfect to split between two friends. The Shittake-Vegetable Spring Rolls are the best way to begin the meal, and are all-around crowd pleasers. The chef usually has a daily menu of gluten-free selections prepared upon request, so call ahead to avoid disappointment.

I’ve been thinking about starting something like this for a long time. My ‘hood, or San Diego’s Downtown area lacks a quality-written and edgy neighborhood-focused newsletter/publication. SO given the fact I know far too much about this city for my own damn good, I figured it was time to share my insidery experience and knowledge of what’s what in 92101, in a weekly webzine/print format.

“What’s Good in The ‘Hood” features exactly that: A simple yet thoughtful rundown of everything in the Gaslamp/East Village/Little Italy that’s relevant and particularly awesome for that week. All collected and easily printed to be the size of just ONE 8×11 sheet of paper. It’s the perfect guide for established locals looking for a heads-up on ‘Hood news and under-the-radar specials around town; and it’s convenient for tourists to fold up and carry with them in their back-pocket for the best experience they won’t find on the first 5 pages of Google.

I wanted to create something that was just plain cool. Nothing fancy or over-saturated with coupons and bullshit. Just something that’s informative and extremely effective. Without the frills.

Simply Put: “What’s Good in The ‘Hood”: is everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

To be completely honest, I don’t know how to hyperlink on the PDF itself yet and I still have a lot to learn in terms of making this as accessible as possible. But hey, this is only Volume One. And I can guarantee you, it’s only going to get better from here on out.

So get out there, and enjoy everything about this wonderful city.

Mon-Sun: 5pm-1am
Opening for Lunch: February 3rd!
I am always delighted when something new opens up in my neighborhood; but most especially when it’s a place that I have East Village has been desperately needing all along. (READ: SUSHI!!!!)
Thus I am so pleased to announce that The Dragon’s Den, directly across from Petco Park in East Village, is now open and is ready to serve the neighborhood! *Yay*

East Village, San Diego is a bustlin’ sphere of post-grad students, self-made entrepreneurs, fashionistas, media people, and dog-friendly urbanites. The neighborhood establishments that have survived the test of time or rather the Padres “off-season” are the ones that have never failed to provide excellent services and to fulfill the needs of the surrounding community. And while stellar establishments such as Cafe Chloe, BASIC urbn Kitchen, Cowboy Star, Neighborhood, etc. have continually provided top-notch service and outstanding quality products to residents in the area, East Village has long needed a place like The Dragon’s Den: A neighborhood bar and lounge, with a healthy Asian Fusion cuisine AND sushi bar that provides an urbané downtown experience but with a much-needed cozy feel.

The Dragon’s Den
meets all the necessary demands of its neighborhood:
*An über chic dog-friendly outside patio? Check.
*A FULL-bar plastered with a generous number of plasma-screen TVs to watch the game? Check.
*A borderline-obsessive assortment of organic beers and organic liquors? Check.
*A separated family dining room for quiet diners, away from the socialite/sports-fan crowd? Check.
*And, DUMPLINGS?!?!? Um, holy YUM!! Double Check!

The Dragon Den’s menu boasts not only an extensive number of Asian-fusion offerings, but they also have a FULL-sushi bar menu as well. Eager as always to try out new spots in my ‘hood, I have already experienced a number of “the Den’s” various dishes, as well as the incredibly fresh fish that is being served at The Dragon’s Den… and so far, it’s all pretty outstanding. It wouldn’t be fair to judge a place well before it’s scheduled *official* grand-opening, which is set for March 3rd, 2011, so I won’t be critiquing the food yet. However, here’s a sneak peek at what you can look forward to at The Dragon’s Den (and likely my new neighborhood hang):

~Open for Lunch (Starting February 3rd, 2010)
~A unique happy hour (that we’ve been told involves a timer and has *never* been done before…)
~Open late for dining and open ’til 1am every night for lounging and socializing.

Menu:
The long list of dumpling dishes greet diners first and foremost: And while there are plenty of interesting options including the Crispy Beef Curry Dumplings ($6) and the Diced Shrimp and Chive Dumplings ($6), the most appealing option seems to be the Dragon’s Den Dumpling Sampler ($8) which includes a pair of each dumpling including: Chicken Gyoza* (my personal fav), Shrimp and Pork Wonton, Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai, and Shrimp Ha Gau.

There are a variety of “small bites” offerings, including the Panko-Crusted Shrimp with Lemongrass Dipping Sauce ($5) and the Spicy Salt & Pepper Calamari ($7) that stand-out to me personally, and veggie-friendly bites such as the Green Onion Pancake ($4), Tangy Cucumber Salad ($5), and the Tofu Lettuce Wraps ($6) seem like perfectly heart-healthy and delicious options as well.

Traditional homemade soups such as the Southern-Style Homemade Pork & Shrimp Wonton Soup ($4/$8) are served in either a cup or a bowl, and an additional list of larger-portioned appetizers including the Dragon Balls ($7) and the Spicy Scallop-Stuffed Tomato ($11) are all fine choices for a tantalizing start to your meal or simply as a nice pair with a round of Dragon Den’s Signature Cocktails.

The Sushi menu offers a wide variety of your traditional offerings, as well as a few unique items — all at very competitive prices: All hand rolls including my favorite, the Scallop Hand Roll ($5) are all five dollars, while their combination platter of fresh Sashimi, will only set you back fifteen dollars: which is a pretty good deal for a Downtown-locale. The Dragon Den’s Roll ($14), a Shrimp tempura roll topped with Spicy Tuna, seems to be the outstanding house favorite and is highly recommended by the staff.

For larger or Family-Style entree dishes, Dragon’s Den offers a number of Noodle dishes including the Spicy Three-Ingredient Lo-Mein ($12) – which I thought was outstanding – and full dishes such as the Honey-Glazed Shrimp ($15), Cashew Chicken with Plum Sauce ($12), Spicy Cumin Lamb ($13), and Mongolian Stir-fried Beef or Lamb with Scallions ($13) will likely be the crowd-pleasing favorites. There are also vegetarian Family-style offerings such as the Spicy Eggplant in Garlic Sauce($10) and the Family-Style Tofu ($10).

For those who have an insatiable sweet-tooth (like mine), I am certain the Toffee Apple with Vanilla Ice Cream ($6) would be an unbelievable ending to any meal, or surely satisfy any late-night sugar cravings.

Although The Dragon’s Den has been open to the public for less than 24 hours, I have no doubt that this place will soon be East Village’s new *it* spot; And that the staff will know my name by the end of this week.

In a city sprinkled with commercialism, finding that perfect independent coffee shop can be a little daunting. You want atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, excellent service, and of course – a delicious cup of Joe. While we aren’t exactly Seattle or San Francisco, we do have a few gems. Luckily for you, quite a few new establishments have popped up in our fair city, providing coffee lovers and Wi-Fi seekers options that do not involve that familiar circular, green logo.

Coffee Junkie: Ryan Bros Coffee

1894 Main St
San Diego, CA 92113
(619) 546-6314
5 min away from Downtown San Diego
Cafe and Roastery
Free Wi-Fi
Hours: Mon-Fri (5:30am-5:30pm) Sat (7:30am-4pm) Sun (9am-2pm)
[Downtown/Barrio Area]

Literally 5 minutes away from the Gaslamp, Ryan Bros Coffee in Barrio Logan is the spot for the ultimate coffee lover. With an extensive menu filled with blends, espressos, cocoas, and specialty drinks, Ryan Bros Coffee has a drink to fit whatever mood you are in. A popular drink for those on the go and in need of a chocolate fix is the Cafe Mocha with Mexican Cocoa (also available in European and White Night). Let me tell you, the aroma of the Cafe Mocha was absolutely delightful and I am happy it was the drink recommended to me.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Ryan Bros Coffee is that it is not a mere coffee shop, but it is a true roastery. Think like a brewery, but for coffee. Situated towards the back of the building is where Ryan Bros roasts their own beans. Your coffee will always be fresh, and once they have your taste buds hooked, you can purchase those same beans for your own personal use. Best of all? All of their coffee is fair trade.

The building housing this coffee heaven is positively urban and spacious with its brick walls and beamed ceilings. Far from being a dingy warehouse in the Barrio, Ryan Bros Coffee is perfect for grabbing an early morning drink or stopping by for lunch. They do have free Wi-Fi for the laptop inclined, however it is not the spot for hours of study. It’s definitely more of a place to socialize with friends, family, and co-workers.

Tip: If you aren’t a coffee goer but your friends are, try one of their iced tea cocktails. I hear they are to die for!

Home Away from Home: Lestat’s on Park

4496 Park Blvd
San Diego, CA 92116
(619) 501-6638
7-10 min from downtown San Diego
Free Wi-Fi
Studious atmosphere
Hours: Soon to be 24hrs – keep checking back

Formerly known as that coffee bar in University Heights with the huge mural of a cleavage bearing chick, Cream Coffee Bar was bought out by Lestat’s and re-christened as Lestat’s on Park. The previous bleak cafeteria look of Cream has since been replaced with new wallpaper, comfy chairs, and dark wood furniture. The entire atmosphere has changed to that of a private study made for a cultured and savvy person in a smoking jacket.

Much of Cream’s menu remains the same with the addition of the ol’ Lestat’s spin, but it isn’t so much the coffee I enjoy most about this place. Aside from the atmosphere, the best feature of Lestat’s on Park is that it is laptop friendly. Not only is the middle portion of the shop sectioned off for those in search of quiet work time, the place is abundant in outlets. Power strips line the walls so that you are never at a loss for power.

Lestat’s on Park is open late, so those insomniac hours of study may be spent here. It is said that this location will also become a 24hr shop, just like the original Lestat’s in Normal Heights. For now Lestat’s on Park closes at midnight – so be sure to check back for complete hours.

Sweet Tooth Binge: Cafe Venti

4681 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 279-8500
11-15 min from downtown San Diego
Meal portion of the menu served after 6pm. Waffles, yogurt, and shaved ice served all day.
Beer on tap and soju also available
Hours: Close at 11pm weekdays, call for complete hours

Cafe Venti, despite it’s Italian name, is not what you would expect it to be. Instead of Italian coffees, you are more likely to find the Asian variety of milk teas. Instead of parents seeking paninis for lunch, you’ll find people requesting the drool-worthy Waffle Yo. And instead of soothing acoustic tunes, you’ll both see and hear sugary sweet K-Pop music videos on the flat screen TVs set throughout the shop. Complete with doorbells on the tables to gain the attention of the waiters and waitresses, Cafe Venti is a K-Town experience away from K-Town.

If fixing your sweet tooth cravings is what you are after, Cafe Venti will be sweet to all five of your senses. As previously mentioned, the Waffle Yo is extremely popular – and it’s hard to deny it as the aroma wafts through out the shop as soon as it is ordered. A fresh waffle is prepared just for you, topped with a large helping of frozen yogurt, and surrounded by generous amounts of kiwi, strawberries, and pineapples. Finish off with one of their specialty lattes – Lava Latte (white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate blend), Oreo Latte, or Green Tea Latte – and you’ll be hurting for the dentist! Cafe Venti is not exactly laptop friendly, but the plus side is that the wi-fi is protected and not hogged by nerds playing Starcraft or watching movies online (like many of the other coffee and tea shops within this area).

Tip: Request to sit at the Christmas lit patio (yes, year round) and you will be treated to a fresh Snuggie! Yes! They give you Snuggies to wear out on the patio!!!!

Also Try: Filter

1295 University Ave
San Diego, CA 92103
(619) 299-0145
Open 24 Hours

If you’ve been to Filter in North Park, you’re in for a treat at the new location right in the heart of Hillcrest. We have not visited this location yet, but there has been nothing but positive buzz about this new spot. Open 24hrs, Filter in Hillcrest is said to be a lot more spacious. You can practically see right through the coffee shop as it appears virtually “wall-less,” a plus for many of the day-goers who love natural light.

Influx

750 West Fir
San Diego, CA 92101
(619) 255-0735
Hours: 6am-9pm Everyday
influxcafe.com
&
1948 Broadway
San Diego, CA
(619) 255-9470

Influx Cafe isn’t quite like your stereotypical “coffee house“: Owner Jason Twilla wanted the design of Influx’s second location to be reflective of term “Influx” itself: An all-encompassing “sphere; “spacey” with a sense of meaning; welcoming an overflow of positive energy and an abundance of light. Influx is located in Little Italy’s new, likely-to-become the social epicenter of the neighborhood, building, the Q - whose gorgeous and innovative design has Jonathan Segal to thank. Segal brought to life his own envisions of a building reflecting a perceptiveness and sensitivity to space, and a thoughtful sense of “openness”. Thus, Influx’s new locale couldn’t be more perfectly suited to Twilla’s own vision.

The space reflects a sense of order: Clean lines, great natural light, modern decor – no mismatched pillows nor knapsacks here. No matter where you sit at Influxyou can see everything: Far and away from your usual dark, nook-y, and eclectic coffee joint. Yet despite their lack of “trying to be indie” efforts, Influx is relaxing and cozy in its own right: A cool breeze runs through the spot, whether you’re inside and out. Comfy cushioned booth or bench seating line nearly all walls. The outdoor seating is thoughtfully arranged and uncongested…

Because everything is better bottomless — especially when it comes to bottomless alcohol.. ****SEASONAL*****
(Call ahead to avoid disappointment!!)

Given the The Pearl Hotel‘s unbelievably charming and almost hidden locale, manicured impeccably with thoughtfully retro-chic decor, you’d expect that this would be the type of spot we’d like to keep to ourselves. But this place is a local secret too good to keep from our friends.

Let’s talk incredible: The Corn Bread Benedict – Pasilla Chili cornbread topped with juicy house bacon, perfectly poached eggs, cheddar cream, and brown sugar butter — is absolutely to die for. If you plan to exhibit any kind of poised modesty during the meal do not order this dish: say good bye to your composure because you sista have just bought yourself a membership to the clean plate club. And how o so divine it feels…

If you’re hunting for something a little less over the top, but still tantalizing palatable, it doesn’t get more simply put than Bacon & Grits: two eggs served any style atop the tender bacon slab and yellow grits, drizzled with a basil pesto and a Pomodoro sauce. Sure, it isn’t what you’d expect if you were coming for “simple” — but it’s certainly all the best of those comfortable and rich flavors that when combined together you’ll accept with nothing less than pure delight.

And aww yes, for my fellow sugar fiends out there, you have met your match with the Almond-Stuffed French Toast. Decadent, with a right balance and eye for texture, con pane baguette is sauteed to delicate perfection and stuffed with highly-addictive ground almond butter, topped with fresh, plump local berries (ours were delicious blackberries) and just the right amount of sticky Créme Anglaise. Another dish whose presence during our meal could only be detected by just the mere berry stains that were left on our plates as evidence…

For just $20, you get your meal and bottomless mimosas to your heart’s content. Served in nearly goblet-sized stemware and no lack of cute waitresses bouncing around and graciously refilling your glass to the tippy top, the Pearl’s bottomless mimosa brunch is no laughing matter — well, unless you count the champagne giggles… With The Pearl’s supremely fair hotel room rates and a kidney bean shaped pool that beckons your name all throughout breakfast, there is no reason to shuffle together a few fun friends and make a day, and night of the fabulous affair. Cheers.

MIX tip: Follow the Pearl Hotel on Twitter (@thepearlhotel) — every so often they announce they will be hosting a 1/2 off brunch for anyone who rides their bike to The Pearl that day!!

AVE 5

2760 5th Avenue
San Diego, CA 92103
619.542.0394

Brunch served on Sundays only
$25 or less

We had heard about the transformation of Banker Hill’s Ave 5 plenty before we knew we had to stop in and see the changes for ourselves. A new look, a tidy up of its decor, and even a drastic shift in their perspective and position on the food itself, certainly made the interior feel a bit more lively,  however it was that increased feeling of excitement throughout the place that really drew us in. Promises of bottomless mimosas were also persuasive arguments as well.

The menu offers an assortment of various Franco-American inspired selections, ranging from the Brioche French Toast and Croque Madame to more California-minded fare, such as the Huevos Verdes and Farmer’s Omelet. Unfortunately they did not have the Soyrizo that morning, a palate arousing combination with jalapeños, onions, fluffy eggs, and soy chorizo, and served with a side of fresh flour tortillas, but my second option however, didn’t disappoint. The Florentine Benedict was served with browned bits of cubed potatoes and caramelized onions, alongside the main event: two toasted English muffins topped with an assortment of flavorful and zesty sauteed wild greens, perfectly poached eggs, modestly coated in velvety hollandaise. The serving portion was spot on, as was the flavor — while nothing stood out brilliantly in the combination, the savory flavor of the greens paired just right with the richness of the eggs and smooth hollandaise, making for a bright, well-balanced dish.

We also went with the Salmon Sandwich: Served on a multi-grain bread with cucumber and a house cream cheese spread, alongside a salad of fresh crisp mixed greens that was ever so lightly drizzled in a peppery dressing, the dish would appeal to those who seek more savory options even during the early hours.

We ordered a bowl of fruit to balance out our savory selections, which came in plentiful form — cubed bits of fresh apples, melons, kiwis, strawberries and plump fresh blackberries to top it was a refreshing addition to the meal that I certainly would not overlook if I were you…

OK we know The Corner doesn’t have bottomless mimosa specials anymore – although they used to (as of October 2010) so hopefully, maybe, someday they will start having them again… Sigh…

However, we decided to include them in this round up solely because they did preserve their other special offering, and perhaps the single greatest brunch addition available here in San Diego: The Bloody Mary Bar: Enjoy your own spicy, vodka-laden creation over brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 am- 1:00 pm.

Organic/“slow” food

If you happen to be by Little Italy or Downtown San Diego, you are merely a short hop and a skip away from a spot that has been beloved by San Diegans since 2007, Starlite Lounge: A gorgeous retro beauty nestled in Mission Hills that beyond its farm-to-table fare served until midnight daily, its fabulous interior, and whimsically “starlit” outdoor patio, Starlite serves up arguably the city’s best Mule. A concoction of Rain Organic Vodka, Ginger beer, and Angostura bitters topped off with a lime in their signature copper cup, it’s a loaded vessel that will likely put you on your bum if you dare doubt its potency.

If you choose to dabble beyond the Mule, I’d point you in the direction of the Gunga Din, made with Montecristo 12-year aged rum, cold Earl Grey, cardamon syrup, lemon and a dash of mint. If you’re a real brute or just looking for a potent slap in the face, try the Kentucky Colonel, made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, ginger beer, lemon, and a dash of house made cherry vanilla bitters for a quick as a lick lullaby into no recollection of last night land…

Whisknladle is one of those rare establishments that has never disappointed me. It very well could be the very “jewel” of La Jolla’s namesake and long-standing reputation as one of San Diego’s most picturesque locales, for both locals and tourists alike. Amidst La Jolla’s Downtown area, you’ll find Whisknladle quietly nestled in, just a block or two off the beaten path and away from the gourmet shops and boutiques.

Beyond just their thoughtful and impeccably prepared farm-to-table selections, the handcrafted cocktails also beckon note for their exemplary palatable achievements, and they, too, deserve their own glimmer in the spotlight as well.

Concoctions such as the Tamarind Margarita, with Chinese Five-Spice, Orange and infused-Tequila or The Julian, with cinnamon-infused bourbon, rosemary, and cider are sure-fire libations that will warm your insides. Less fiery vessels such as the Lavendar Cosmo with Blueberry & Lavender infused vodka, white cran & blueberry will brighten the senses. But fair warning if you chose to order the Passion Fruit Vanilla Mimosa: you may want to opt for the pitcher to share as surely your thirsty mates will want more than just one sweet sip.

GREAT Service

While the decor may be a bit on the quirkier side, you can always depend on the vibe, the service, and of course, the concoctions, to always be absolutely on point at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge. East Village’s prime scenester locale also happens to be one of the city’s founding fathers of our explosive craft cocktail movement: True to their interior’s “Gold Rush” theme, the El Dorado staff is adorned in era-appropriate attire with a modern twist, yet their strict technique in crafting the perfect cocktail has and will always remain uncompromisable, despite the large and demanding crowds that flock to EL D every Friday and Saturday night.

While El Dorado changes up its menu and celebrates its release seasonally, tried and true classics never seem to slip away: You’ll never see any lack of the Moscow Mule, served in a Mason Jar and topped with a lime and twisted Mint leaf across the bar, while the Oaxaca Old-Fashioned is reserved only for those true connoisseurs whose tolerance can stand up to its smoky, sensory-arousing allure — and its not so secret sneaky affects.

There is always a new food fad sweeping the nation and Smashburger is the latest.  It’s as if someone went around the U.S. planting Smashburger seeds because they’ve been sprouting up like crazy since the first opening only three short years ago!  They currently have over 375 franchise agreements, plan to open 100-125 locations by the end of 2010, and estimate that number to exceed 500 within the next five yearsSouthern California is in the middle of the craze, with the opening of its third location in just a matter of months.  With its diverse menu, fresh approach to fast food, and emphasis on customer service, it’s no wonder Smashburger is quickly becoming “every city’s favorite burger place”.

It’s easy to think of Smashburger as just another place to grab a quick burger and fries, but once you step inside and take one bite you’ll notice some unique differences from other well known fast food spots.   “Smash, Sizzle, Savor”, the largely printed words upon the walls of every location, means that your Smashburger isn’t made until you order it.  Only then is the 100% Angus beef smashed on the grill, cooked to juicy perfection, topped with fresh veggies, and served with your favorite Smashside.

The full smash and a round-up of our fav Smash Selections after the jump!

You would think with hundreds of locations that they are just a well-oiled machine, pumping out the same menu items day after day in each location.  If you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all right?  Wrong!  Smashburger wanted to throw out the concept of a completely uniform menu and create special items specific to the location.  If you stop by any Kentucky store you can get the Bluegrass Smashburger (or Smashchicken) with applewood smoked bacon, Wild Turkey Bourbon barbeque sauce, cheddar cheese, and fried banana peppers on an egg bun.  Before you roll the dice in Las Vegas, pick up a Sin City Smashburger (or Smashchicken) toppped with a fried egg, American cheese, applewood smoked bacon, haystack onions, grilled onions, and Smash Sauce on an egg bun.  And of course the three San Diego locations wouldn’t be complete without their own signature burger packed with all the flavors of Southern California. The San Diego Smashburger (or Smashchicken) is piled high with, you guessed it, fresh avocado, cilantro, onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and chipotle mayo served on a torta roll with a slice of lime.  I guess you’ll just have to pop into the next Smashburger you see to find out what one-of-a-kind selections they’re offering next.

I was privileged to be at the Mission Valley grand opening where I tried a variety of  Smashburger goodness.  We ordered the Spicy Baja Smashchicken, with guacamole, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, Chipotle mayo, and fresh jalapenos on a Chipotle bun.  I felt compelled to try a salad just to challenge the taste and appeal of fast food salads everywhere.  I ordered the Smash Wedge, a giant hunk of iceberg lettuce sprinkled with lots of tangy blue cheese, crispy bacon, fresh tomatoes, and crunchy red onion drizzled with blue cheese dressing.  It looked like I could have ordered it from a modern little bistro and paid $15 for it.  Instead, this over-sized, super fresh, and quite satisfying salad only cost $7. That’s another concept Smashburger has adopted: Serve only fresh, quality, made-to-order products, while making sure it’s still quick, delicious, and always affordable.

Photos by Taylor Doms for TheMixster.com Copyright 2010 All Rights Reserved

As if that wasn’t enough we decided we needed some Smashsides too.  While the friendly girl at the register was pushing the Fried Pickles, we went with the Haystack Onions and Veggie Frites. The very thinly sliced onions were delicately battered so they stayed light and crispy but still maintained a sweet onion flavor.  The Veggie Frites were something I hadn’t seen before, especially not on a fast food menu.  The flash-fried carrots, asparagus, and green beans were slightly over salted for my taste but it didn’t seem to matter since I didn’t stop reaching for them until I hit the bottom of the basket.

I have to mention the service because it surpassed my expectations, and in my opinion, how you’re treated as a diner can be just as important as how the food tastes.  From the people taking the orders, to those delivering them, to the employees walking the floor, every single one of them was genuinely interested in making the dining experience perfect for each person.  We felt very taken care of and every employee was motivated and willing to do what it takes to make the guests happy and want to come back.  We met one of the Mission Valley Smashburger owners, Wayne, and we instantly knew where this motivation came from.  He expressed his desire to give young people an opportunity to work hard and learn good customer service skills to carry through their lives and future careers.  It was really refreshing to see young high school and college kids enjoy their job and be able to put their own personality into their work.  If you want to find out how to be part of the Smashburger team, from in-store to corporate positions, click here: www.smashburger.com/work_here.php.

Mix Tip: Leave those strict vegetarian or vegan friends of yours at home.  We saw a sign at the counter offering a “meatless” option, the Black Bean Burger, but were surprised to note the small print that read “NOT vegetarian or vegan”.  All the burgers, and chicken for that matter, are cooked on the same surface so if you’re concerned about your meatless burger potentially touching meat, then try a salad perhaps?

The Mission has already created quite a fan base in San Diego, but if you haven’t had the privilege of chowing down at one of their three locations, then get in line.  No, literally get in line!  Every time I decide to hit up The Mission for an amazingly fulfilling breakfast it seems the rest of SD had the same idea, and got there before I did!  Regardless, a lengthy line could never keep me from what they’re cooking up inside, and fortunately it’s worth the wait every time!

You should know now that you’re not going to find the run-of-the-mill bacon and eggs on the menu.  The Mission offers over-sized classic and Latin inspired dishes full of flavor, but not full of  fat and calories.  They decided early on that food should not only be extremely tasty but surprisingly healthy. Each plate shines with vibrant colors that can only come from the freshness of ingredients.  Oh, and they also made it ridiculously affordable as well.  Giant gourmet portions all around $10 or less? Sounds good to me.

Enough about how much it costs, once you’ve had an enormous plate of famous Mission French Toast you’d be willing to pay anything to have it all over again.  Sweet, griddled house-baked cinnamon bread sits gently atop a tart berry puree, and then is dusted lightly with powdered sugar.  To this day I don’t think I’ve been able to finish my entire plate, but I always happily go down trying.

The pancake selection is pretty impressive, combining common flavors with a healthy twist.  It’s like when your parents used to trick you into eating your veggies by making cauliflower look like mashed potatoes; except this time you’re more than O.K. with it.  Strawberry Granola Pancakes, Blueberry Cornmeal Pancakes, or Banana Blackberry Pancakes are piled high, packed with seasonal fruit, and decoratively drizzled with the berry puree.

If you’re ready to move past the pancake and french toast breakfast then The Mission has some eclectic options you’ve probably never seen on a quite the same way ona menu before. The Zen Breakfast might just be the opposite of the Mission French Toast platter.  They’re scrambling protein-packed egg whites, braising tofu, and lightly grilling crisp zucchini, tomato, onion, and squash, and serving it with whole grain brown rice. That’s not even one of the eclectic options I was talking about, though.  There are some uniquely bold flavors coming from their Chino-Latino based breakfasts.

If you’re feeling adventurous, or the room is spinning, try the Mission Chilaquiles: corn chips topped with scrambled eggs, black beans, and roasted tomato ginger sauce.  This dish has been known to cure the common hangover, as spicy foods have been believed to help in the healing process of one too many margaritas or Jager shots.   So it’s pretty much a super food and my idea of the perfect Sunday morning meal/cure to overindulgence.  The Plata Verde con Huevos pairs sweet corn tamales with eggs any style and smothered in fragrant roasted tomatillo sauce.

Their breakfast plates are so delicious, so beautifully presented, and so distractingly large that I almost forgot they serve lunch as well!  They’re making sure to appeal to the masses while still sticking to their Chino-Latino roots.  They’re calling these dishes ”simple, healthy, and ethnically eclectic” which takes the words right out of my mouth.  They’re offering cheesey House, Steak, and Chicken Pesto Quesadillas, and a bunch of super healthy lunch plates.  The Ginger Sesame Tofu and Brown Rice are tossed together with perfectly cooked brown rice, zucchini, squash, bean sprouts, broccoli, and braised sesame tofu. Another anti-meat option is the Vegetarian Roll-up; with Thai peanut sauce coated sprouts, cilantro, pan-fried noodles, and mixed vegetables are generously packed into a wheat tortilla. For a little heat order the Baja Shrimp Wrap and enjoy tender rock shrimp, black beans, cabbage, jalapenos, and their signature Chipotle cream sauce folded into a grilled Roma tortilla.  There’s also something on the menu called the Indo-Chine Double Happiness Bowl. It’s similar to the Ginger Sesame Tofu and Brown Rice, but apparently makes you twice as happy.

The Mission is also pretty proud of their coffee (they call it the “last legal vice” and I couldn’t agree more), smoothie, and shake varieties. Oregon Chai Latte, Mission Mocha Thai, Power-Aid Slush, Mocha Chip Shake, Non-fat Blackberry Banana Smoothie, and Mango and Green Tea Freeze are just some of the many beverages they’re mixing, blending, and pouring daily.  And in case you were wondering/hoping, they’re also making fresh muffins, brownies, croissants, and the personally named, and personal favorite, Gerry’s Pecan Banana Bread in their bakery, each and every day.

MIX Tip: The Bean Cloud: Heaven in a glass, a dream on the palette, and a tender-loving and tantalizing tingle on the sweet tooth. Don’t try and fight your will power, just DO it. Also, if you’re feeling generous and happen to be in the neighborhood please feel welcome to bring one by the MIX HQs too — that would simply make our day; and it’s a sure fire way to get yourself good marks in our books as well.
