Fresh Mix Pick: DJ HeadShake

At TheMixster.com, we only feature DJs we 100% believe in- ones that we know that you will be hearing a lot from prettay, prettay, prettay soon. That being said, we are delighted to bring you the freshest raw cuts that the electro soundscape has to offer. And of course, spotlighting local San Diego DJs that cut through the crap and strive to bring us these killer new beats.

DJ HeadShake, aka Joseph Maldonado, is a forward-thinking man who believes in fresh & hard dance music. Thus, we are big believers in the HeadShake movement. From Dutch house- electro- dub-step to God only knows what – you can certainly expect HeadShake to always have you on tip toes.

Born and raised in San Diego, we assume that DJ HeadShake must be a very curious and persistent individual. His sound & taste in music is so far and away from the typical boom-boom nightclubs in Gaslamp Land. He is constantly introducing us to his new aural discovers- whether we are ready for them or not. HeadShake certainly won’t win the rat race doing what he does; however he assures us that he never intended to join the race to begin with: He’s already started a campaign; that is all his own.

His blog Mintphonic is pioneering the movement to bringing beats to those ready to experience the fresh-as-Mint vision. Bringing to your attention tracks and artists that leave a cool-clean feeling on your palette and primed and ready for a whole extra dosing for more. Personally, I like a lot of the tracks HeadShake features on his site, but what makes his site really stand out to me is his writing style: Insightful and interesting commentary, that is nothing like the typical music junkie with a blogspot and a big-mouth blab. Hit up Mintphonic for the music; but stick around and check out what he has to say about music; it’s totally worth your while.

DJ HeadShake may be sort of newish to the DJ game but that in no way reflects on his expertise when it comes to the subject of serious gut-lurching electro. DJing with the likes of Le Castle Vania, Zoo Brazil, Them Jeans, and Todd Fink from the The Faint, DJ HeadShake certainly hasn’t let his “novice to the scene” stop him from ascending to the top of his game.

His mix Silent Boom, is a more than just an earful; His latest mix, Silent Boom is an electro heavy collection of his freshest beats- ; including little tastes of dub-step he’s started to feed us. Get ready to put that body to work — because some of these tracks are about to consume your senses. Check it out below!!

Kicking the whole thing off with a head-bobbin’ worthy remix of Empire of the Sun’s track Walking on a Dream” HeadShake eases us into his compilation with a track that is manageable for even beginner electro heads- and that still packs a funky beat.

Skipping ahead to one of my favorite songs of the moment, “We should all wear Polka Dots“  by Afrojack he starts to skew even farther off the mainstream, into the outright wacky. You’ll dig, too.

About 37 minutes into it, a remix of Blake Lewis’ “Heartbreak on Vinyl”, will make you think “Man this might be getting a little too trancey-house for likings” but be patient, as the bass kicks right back in full throttle.

A Grand Puba track will give you a taste of a fueled up hip hop track- that then transforms into an all out glitchy-dub step cut that sinks your teeth to grind status.
