I’ve had this mix, the latest from San Diego-based DJ [*one of my favorite & consistently awesome artists to book] Sean Fizz, at the top of my playlist over the last few days. It’s been my constant go-to background soundtrack for when I’m writing at the office or while reading over contracts. But, it wasn’t until I was driving on a deserted mountain road through the immense but yet eerily still Carson National Forest, somewhere out in the middle of New Mexico, that I realized how subtly vibrant and of course, thoroughly enjoyable this mix really is.
Fizz’s “Home Cooking Mixtape” is a well-curated playlist, that doesn’t include those upfront peak time drops or attention-coaxing tunes. It’s a downtempo-y house chill-out mix that subtly and very successfully, maintains its effervescent character. It’s not your typical “zone-out” mix. On the contrary, this selection heightens your awareness to your surroundings. Hypnotic vocal repetition, airy yet uplifting builds, minimal percussion, and elusive funky pulses throughout the mix effectively maintain your personal attentiveness rather than provoke a heavy-eyed reaction. Tracks like the latest off his new EP “Echoes of the Past” by Todd Edwards, Bok Bok & Tom Trago‘s collab “Pom Clash,” the definitively Claude Von Stroke remix of French Fries’ “Yo Vogue,” and Sean Fizz‘s own original, “Wavey,” are no doubt the stand-outs from this mix package.
Where his tune selection lacks in being
distracting “floor-filling,” it makes up for in its environmental versatility: in that anywhere outside of the club, this mix is adaptable; an ideal background soundtrack at anytime of day. As per the conditions by which Sean Fizz made this mix, “while cooking [his] breakfast this morning” [and thus, derived its namesake, Home Cooking] you can no doubt sense that “slowly ease out of bed, wake up to a hot & delicious home-cooked meal, and skip out the door in a good mood for the rest of the day/overall happy yet easy-breezy vibe” this mix presents.
Although, Sean Fizz may have put it best:
“All the love I put into my meal I also put into this mixtape, enjoy!”
