In the Mix: Gloss Boutique

When I think fashion, I hardly ever think “Hey! Let’s shop in PB!” Unless I plan on buying a Halloween costume, bikini and a beer belly, Pacific Beach is the last place I would look to get my stylista on. So when I was told a new boutique was hitting Garnet Ave, I had my reservations.

As I stepped inside Gloss, I could certainly sense a difference between this boutique and the other shops that have been stapled along Garnet. Loud music, bottles of wine next to the cash register, staff running in and out – styling customers and placing inventory back onto  well thought out displays. I felt as if I were backstage in Bryant Park during NYC fashion week – definitely not a block from PB Bar & Grill!

Gloss‘ strives to be more fashion forward but without alienating the beach crowds. “Everything is more casual or thrift store, there is no real style in PB. It’s not like North Park where people are a little more adventurous,” says owner Herb Terrell. “I want to bring style to the beach.” And by the looks of things, Herb certainly seems to know what he is talking about! Having dabbled in both the fashion scene and retail, Herb formerly co-owned a women’s shoe boutique, Forward Footwear, and has even been a model himself. He’s worked the runway and has been part of a few big-name campaigns…

Understanding Herb’s vision, I pictured a more stylish PB: Girls in sexy-spiked heels but keeping within the beach vibe w/slouchy tanks and distressed cut-off shorts. The shop is filled w/animal prints, ruffled dresses, rompers, and I am digging the wall of hanging woven belts! The best part? Everything at Gloss is affordable, ranging from $20-30. And you’ll never have to worry about being caught wearing the same outfit as the girl in line for the bathroom! “Every piece has something different about it and we have new shipments come in every Wednesday,” says Herb.

Awesome, Herb likes to keep it fresh!

Tonight, Gloss is gearing up for their grand opening showcase benefiting Keep a Breast; a charity promoting breast cancer awareness. Not one to only support his own cause, Herb believes in supporting good causes as well. This event is not one to be missed as there will be art showcases, giveaways, and beats brought to you by DJ Corey Biggs.

And just for you readers, I come bearing gifts!
