Came across this gem of an EP thanks to a tweet from our friends at Gotta Dance Dirty – One that merely read something like “#bassline” and then some nondescript shorted link. Suppose I shouldn’t be so willing to admit my easily aroused interest, but they had me swiftly at #bassline. Nonetheless. I’m so pleased I clicked through because the rewards were absolute top-shelf pickings.
Fresh off San Francisco’s tech-beast of an imprint, dirtybird has unleashed their premiere original release of 2012 with an EP from London legend, DAVE SPOON, under his new moniker SHADOW CHILD. The self-titled EP contains two original tunes, String Thing & Rustic Chip, both of which align themselves well with the DirtyBird’s signature style: sinister bass-headed and full of unabashed tech-bending mentality. String Thing‘s funky synth lines are padded with glowing reverbs that are extra crisp cut and aurally striking while Rustic Chip integrates classic Dave Spoon percussion and very DirtyBird reminiscent (Chicago/nu techy house) grooves that no doubt earned his new sound and production pseudo instant approval from the imprint’s boss, Claude VonStroke. Not only was I fully into both tracks at first listen, but I was SO much so that I am happy to say I too, am now the proud owner of my very own SHADOW CHILD EP.
