LOCAL PRODUCE SPOTLIGHT: SQZMYLMNS

SQZMYLMNS, the duo consisting of the deck masterminds Saul Q and Omar Ramos aka Kid Wonder, come together in the form of a tropical tech-infused hurricane: Raining down heavy, bass-laden drops that absolutely drown the dance floor with refreshing aural flows, that leave the crowds soaking wetand always begging for more.

From rooftop parties to inside the darkest underground clubs, I’ve witnessed SQZMYLMNS ferociously tear dance floors apart. Personally, I didn’t even notice the (apparently) massive earthquake that hit this past Easter Sunday. For me, and the 200 other tech-entranced others around me, we were far too mesmerized by the earth-shaking and foundation cracking breaks of SQZMYLMNS’ set that had already been hitting us unrelentingly all afternoon long.

At Local Produce on July 1st on the IVY Rooftop, we can only assume their performance will be no different: Highly-kinetic electro bangers, with a huge incline for tropical tech grooves, that channel that sultry Miami state of mind: Moving bodies — glistening in the warm moonlight, while overlooking the clear ocean waters off of South Beach; hips swinging and feet moving nonstop; commanded only by the powerful and rhythmic percussion and luscious, summery synths — tickling all of your senses until dawn.

However what makes SQZMYLMNS’ sound so distinct and yet so innately symbolic, is their infusion of an array of Latin hybrid sounds. Both born and raised in San Diego, Saul and Omar integrate those inherent sonic facets, that hold tremendous cultural significance and relevance within our local community into their dance electronica fundamentals. Thus, their use of samples like traditional Mexican brass horns, multi-layered-cumbia-inspired percussion ensembles, and the cool fluidity yet unavoidable shoulder-shaking character of corrido – are what make SQZMYLMNS’ creations so sonically distinguishable; that achieve a sound that is uniquely, and, so undeniably, San Diego -inspired.

Here are a few of my personal favorite SQZMYLMNS creations, for you to fall in love with as well.

SQZMYLMNS – Paisonic

All Leather — Audios Mis Amoebas (SQZMYLMNS remix)

Crookers vs. Khia – My Neck My Knobb (SQZMYLMNS mix)

Here’s Saul Q’s Latest Mix I’m currently obsessed with:

Saul Q – Agua Fresca

AGUA FRESCA MIX by saulq

And Kid Wonder’s Mixtape: That I don’t think I will ever be able to remove from my iPod. Honestly I have to admit the only reason I actually made it back from Coachella safely — through the deadly desert back roads route (aka suicide mission) — was because I had this baby playing, at max level and on repeat the whole death-defying ride home… SO in a way this mix kind of saved my life…

Kid Wonder – Puro Party

Catch SQZMYLMNS at LOCAL PRODUCE on Thursday, July 1st on the IVY Rooftop along w/ COLOUR VISION and get ready for the infectious sounds of their cumbia tropical tech-heavy set and a furious booty shakedown.
