While the site was down last week for maintenance, there were a few sonic gems that were released; and that I was foaming at the mouth DYING to write about. But, alas the site was in the process of being destroyed and put back together, piece by piece & code by code, and leaving me shit outta luck. That is, until now. One of those said gems happened to be from one of my top 5 favorite producers in the Moombahton game, Jon Kwest and his mix for Dirty Sweaty Nasty‘s podcast series “Throbcast.” (Which is an excellent name I might add.)
DSN’s series have featured a handful of INCREDIBLE mixtapes – the one from Sazon Booya happens to be my VERY favorite the NYC duo have made to date. These podcasts don’t get even NEARLY the amount of attention they so deserve, and it’s a damn shame; because each and every one I have heard thus far are downright TOP NOTCH. I highly recommend you take the time and peruse the archives when you have a bit of downtime.
On the latest THROBCAST installment, Jon Kwest throws down a carefully curated playlist of moombah club floor killas, that are heavy on layers of murmuring sub bass and light on the bro-ish “jump-up” growls & teethy leads. What differentiates Jon Kwest’s own brand of sound and his approach to the genre, is that his selection of samples are unlike anyone else’s, genre-wide. His own tracks are packed with more weight on the bass end, while his highs aren’t nearly as confrontational, screechy or squealed to a high-pitch as you’d hear typically used by most Moombahton producers. Kwest’s tracks are focused around building energy through darker basslines, and less focused on the punchy saw lead stabs. And he accomplishes the task of building his tracks to uplift the vibe of any crowd, without having to add “noise” to forcibly invoke hype; and he does so very successfully.
My favorite track in the playlist, also happens to be one of Kwest’s latest originals, “Scanner” – a techy-minded gutter-low bassline with hi-beam synth builds and a dark yet groovy bass drum pattern. It’s mashed in the mix, underneath the vocals of Kwest’s official remix of DJ Class’ “Tear Da Club Up,” so to accurately get the full umph the track delivers, download it below and listen to it on its own.
