Subtext Gallery | 2479 Kettner Blvd.
Performance by Pocket at 9pm
This Friday, a ONE NIGHT ONLY exhibition as APASD showcases the crème de la crème of their Plastic Fantastic Call For Entries at Subtext Gallery in Little Italy. Featuring 30 photos to be exact, taken by a wide range of San Diego artists with one common thread – all captured with the use of only plastic film cameras. The photos are raw, notably undigital-ified, sometimes blurry, and abounding in awesome. Sounds pretty f-ing fantastic to me!
More info and photos after the jump!
“We’ve wanted to do a lomograph show for awhile,” says Don Hollis, partner at Subtext. He’s referring to the former little Russian Lomo camera that has become a worldwide phenom for those with a hankerin’ for a spontaneous method of photography that breaks all the traditional rules. Shoot from the hip, indeed.
“With the instant gratification of digital, this was recapturing that feeling of wonder with photography,” says Kari Pfeffer, coordinator of the event. “What will the image look like? Will it match my vision? Will it even come out?!”
Each photo on display was approached with a singular voice, utilizing a variety of film types and techniques by the artists – and all were taken using plastic cameras (Holga, Diana, Lomo, Polaroid, etc). “Not Just for Hipsters” was the APASD‘s headline for their Call for Entries earlier this year, though all you lovable hipsters out there are still highly encouraged to check it out.
Curated by photography gallery owner Joseph Bellows – the top 30 chosen photos entered in the competition are on display exclusively at Subtext, where the images will be auctioned off to benefit the AJA Project: a San Diego-based nonprofit that utilizes photography-based educational programs to transform the lives of displaced youth.
Other than fabulous art (at least one new exhibition per month!), mainstays of Subtext are the beverages provided and sweet music playing in the courtyard. Stop by to take a look, a drink, and a listen – and hopefully take home something that will make your walls a little more, shall we say… Fantastique?
