Rubicon Deli is already the go-to place for surfers, businessmen, and families alike, but in case you just emerged from that rock you’ve been living under, I’ll give you the low down on this bitchin’ Mission Beach hot spot.
This deli is built on one philosophy: Fresh, fresh, fresh! They’re baking up seven different kinds of bread daily including classic white and wheat, along with pesto, jalapeno jack, garlic, and blue cheese. They’re topping each delicious loaf with crisp vegetables, thinly sliced deli meats, their housemade creamy tuna salad, and hearty Italian meatballs. They’ve already appropriately/inappropriately named their multi-layered concoctions like The Whales Veg, Achin’ 4 Bacon, and the 1/2 Pound Dom Pastram so you’ll never forget your favorite.
When you think of a deli, perhaps you think of taking a number and waiting for the half pound of sliced meat you chose from the selection sitting behind the shiny glass cabinet. Rubicon is taking these old fashioned ideas of what a deli should be, and modernizing them. You have to place your order and wait to be called but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. You can take your order and hit the road or stay, sit at any available table, and watch T.V., if you’re so inclined. Last time I was in the flat screen was playing old Popeye the Sailor cartoons. The black laquer based high tables and off-white half booth is not the interior you’d expect from a fast-paced deli but the seemingly fancy furniture fits perfectly with the quality of their products.
I usually go for The Stallion piled high with salami, ham, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, pepperoncini, roasted red peppers, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, mayo, and mustard on my choice of their signature breads (which always seems to be wheat). They offer half and whole-sized sandwiches and let it be known that it took me two days to finish a whole!
Mix Tip! Rubicon Deli lingo: Order any sandwich “naked” and wave goodbye to the bread. If you can’t do without it, you can always request it “scooped” and they’ll hollow out the roll for you. Announce that you want your sandwich “dapper” and they’ll heat it up and serve it along side some aus ju ($1.00 more). They can also transform any of your favorite sandwiches into its more health conscious counterpart: A salad.
I’m all about knowing how to order to an establishment’s specifications, hailing from the Philadelphia area. If you walk into a Philly cheesesteak joint you BETTER know exactly what to say or else you’re not getting your food the way you want it, if at all! The intimidation of the employees alone will make you want to practice your order before you walk in the door. Luckily, Rubicon is taking it a little easier on its customers.
The impressive deli selections can be distracting, but Rubicon is also tossing fresh ingredients into some surprisingly filling salads. The Baby Blue Eyes combines spring greens, avocado, blue cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts, and a side of creamy poppy seed dressing for an impressively gourmet looking AND tasting lunch. They’ve also included their own name into the classic Rubicobb, with bright green romaine topped with avocado, tomato, bacon, hard-boiled egg, and rolled turkey with a side of house-made dijon vinegreitte.
Whether your an early riser or a night owl, Rubicon Deli is making sure you can get the breakfast you crave at any hour. They’re mixing up the all popular Acai Bowls with ripe berries, crunchy vanilla almond granola, honey and bee pollen? That’s interesting. Or try the Love at First Bite, white, wheat, or cinnamon suga’ bread fresh out of the oven daily, with a spread of luscious peanut butter, Nutella, banana, jelly, or sweet honey. For a more traditional morning meal, Rubicon has the Late Riser at your disposal all day, every day: You choose the bread and they’ll add some tender egg whites, crisp bacon, spicy pepper jack cheese, fresh tomato and avocado, topped with a Tapitio Remoulade to add a punch of flavor to your day.
Mixster Sidenotes: If you want to take Rubicon Deli’s fresh baked bread home and pawn it off as your own, you can do just that. Order half a loaf for $1.75 or a whole for $2.75.
Though it is very limited, there is free parking next to the building.
Delivery options are available to your home, office, or if you’re just relaxing on the beach they’re delivering right to the sand too.
Procrastination is rewarded, so call Rubicon to cater your next event with as little as one day notice.
$2.00 bottomless coffee and tea so hang out all day and get buzzed.
