The greatest movement within San Diego’s local art & culture scene is turning two years old this week. And already, and even in its infancy, Sezio has become an archetype within our city and has contributed a vast spectrum of meaning and artistic relevance to our entire local community.

(Party Details and more after the jump)

Sezio.org is, without a doubt, one of San Diego’s most prominent websites and perhaps San Diego’s most influential non-profit movements in and outside just the local art scene. Still at the forefront of the movement, Sezio’s leader, Zack Nielsen formed Sezio as an organization that would aim to provide local artists a network in which they would be able to access resources and collectively provide support. Sezio‘s objective is to attract the public’s attention and initiate community involvement through a variety of innovative ways; involving new media and creative, public displays.

Since then, Sezio continues to grow from the forward-thinking minds and persistent and talented individuals who are involved with the organization: Those that simply have a whim of hope that San Diego and its’ present community have the potential to blossom with an appreciation for the arts; that will one day grow into a city-wide garden bursting with cultural value in full bloom.

Here are a couple of Sezio’s noteworthy achievements throughout the years that I find personally captivating, inspiring, and well-worth reminiscing:

Exist 1981 – “Sewer Beasts” – March 2010

Sewer Beasts” is exactly what it sounds like: A subterranean trip below the city. A project where Exist 1981 sought to explore the underbelly of civilization and to undercover the “Sewer Beasts“- and leave his own personal artistic mark among them as well. Exist 1981 worked for two days straight and the journey was documented by fellow Sezio man Wes Bruce. Sezio set up a challenge for explorers to find the “Sewer Beasts” – with their reward being a ticket to the forthcoming Washed Out/Small Black show. They set up clues and a video map of the location of the “beasts” and sent their loyal fans on the hunt beneath the streets in search of Exist 1981′s latest undertaking. Three, anxious Sezio-heads and Washed Out fans found the “beasts” in less than 72 hours after the scavenger hunt was announced. An unmistakable demonstration of Sezio’s loyal, and very curious following.

All-Star Collab on the “Boat House” – February 2010

Featuring artists: Mike Maxwell, Neko, Exist 1981, Tocayo, Kelli Murray, Brent Sandor, Carly Ealey, Wes Bruce, Sean & Stacy Kelley, Sean Ward and Jane Weibel

“The Boat House” was basically a noble undertaking after Sezio was “lent” a home (think the house was pretty much doomed for foreclosure…) and the artists, mentioned above, came together and for one week created one-of-a-kind works of art on the walls of the home that formerly belonged to four very talented San Diego musicians. After the week, Sezio threw a party to celebrate and invited along three local bands to play at the event, and all of their close friends as well. Although the police ended up crashing the party just hours into the live music and the festivities had to be cut short, the art that resulted from the week-long effort was visually stunning; and it all expressed the aesthetic array throughout not only San Diego’s art sphere, but also the internal diversity within Sezio’s own creative collective.

To celebrate these and the many other significant contributions the members of Sezio have made to our city’s ever-growing culture-sphere and their unmatched dedication to San Diego as a whole, they will be throwing events at both The Casbah and Subtext on Saturday, June 12th for all their loyal supporters and friends: The Sezio Family.

At the Casbah, will be Writer, Cuckoo Chaos , and from up north, Trouble in the Wind, with Knorphus in the Atari Lounge. Over at Subtext, Little Deadman will be performing, while the following artists will be showcasing their own creations – made just for this special evening:

Please come show your support for Sezio and all the energy, talent, and cultural they have continually provided for our community. And for purposes only to serve your Saturday night sensibilities: Sezio knows how to throw a really good party. I can assure you on top of that feel good tingle you’ll get for being a good neighbor, you’ll also be rewarded with an evening of good times – surrounded by the best and brightest of San Diego’s social and creative folk.
Beverages will be provided by Karl Strauss Brewery, Honest Teas, and Evolve Wines.

Party Schedule: 6:00pm -11:30pm
6pm-9:30pm- Subtext

  10. Hey man I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to write something worth reading . I am all over the internet and I see so much pointless content that is just written for the sake of putting something new on their page. It takes passion to create good stuff, thanks for caring.
