This Thursday, March 25th, something really awesome is going down involving one of my favorite local non-profits, at my hands-down one of my favorite venues in all of San Diego to date: The artist organization, Sezio, will be holding down a special event at Sushi: Center for the Urban Arts (390 11th Ave.) featuring two breakthrough electronic music artists that are making serious sound waves on the national circuit.
All the way from the East Coast, to SXSW, to our humble San Diego abode, The “Washed Out- Small Black” Tour will be taking our heads for a spin and our bodies for a ride as the dance floor bumps with heavy electronic vibrations and deep bass that packs a sense of aural intrigue.
Washed Out is a one-maned pop production, of Ernest Greene, that involves a daze of synthesized sounds and deep drum beats that cause a sway-worthy reaction.
My favorite Washed Out track has to be “Feel It All Around” – Which sounds like a mix of Depeche Mode with Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”.

Almost feel like throwing on an 80s new-wave aqua-blue blazer and rolling up my sleeves while I listen to “Hold Out“- it channels that “top down cruising through South Beach” vibe. I like the lyrical disco thing kinda going down in the track “Lately” that’s equipped with an upbeat, “take me down to funky town” bass-line.
Small Black is a collective of men who certainly love synthesizers of all different shapes and sizes. Also making their way from their showcase at SXSW, Small Black is ready to bring their minimal sound in the form of drum machines and by other electronic means to fill the Sushi Center up with cool tones and lyrical melodies. Their track “Despicable Dogs” perfectly exemplifies their concrete-Popish sound.
Pictureplane, out of Colorado, will be kicking off the night with probably the most upbeat and heavy-dance set of the night. Their track “Goth Star” is electronically multifaceted and incorporates a rhythmic back drop sure to get the whole evening moving in the right direction.
If you’ve ever been to a Sezio event, which you probably haven’t, but if this event is anything like their “Boat House” Event last month, all I can say is get ready for chaos to occur in the form of great times, killer energy, and an eclectic crowd sure to boggle a few brain bubbles. And if you miss it, be ready to hear the rundown of how awesome this event was for the next month or so…
Can’t handle being left out? I’d suggest jumpin’ on a ticket sooner than later. And I’m only saying that because I bought my ticket three weeks ago, so I’m not worried; But you on the other hand… You better your A into G buddy…
