The What’s What: OK. So, we’ve decided to take on a pretty big undertaking. And by big, I mean a MASSIVE undertaking: Over just the last four months we have been working, around the clock day and night (they just seem to blend together now…) to put together San Diego’s very FIRST, EVER — Electronic Music and Technology Conference; or what we like to call: SDMTCv.1
You may or may not be thinking to yourselves at this very moment: WHAT THE %&*^ WERE YOU THINKING?!?!?!?!?!?!
Well, we don’t blame you. However, this is how we see it:
San Diego is now, more than ever, ready for this: Our very own electronic music scene locally, has been blossoming with hopeful sprouts of talent the past five years. And in merely just two years time, our quaint garden of talent began to incline, and then, all of a sudden, it rapidly-flourished; growing into a full-blown jungle, teeming with innumerable new colorful, and bright species, vociferously- spanning corner to corner across the entire city, revealing new hidden sonic gems around every twist and turn, month after month. And, there is NO sign of this overwhelming and exponentially-burgeoning movement of both producers and enthusiasts of the sound slowing down — anytime soon.
To put it simply, San Diego is evolving. And leading the forefront of this change, is very much in fact, electronic music.
However, electronic music, inherently, cannot be without its indisputably-crucial soul mate: Technology. Imperative to the evolution of electronic music is its’ formation of and its’ essential reliance on its symbiotic relationship to technological development: In all corresponding realms including sound production, visual engineering, mobilization, info-systems and communications transmission, and global-reaching commercial dissemination. Thus unfolds our imperial justification of our decision to form a reciprocal correlation between Electronic Music and Technology.
Ideologically-speaking, it would not be too far-fetched to assume the general public’s understanding of electronic music’s dependence and its inherently paralleled-growth corresponding to technological advancement. However, what is apparent to those both inside and outside the two respective fields, is the disparity between the two, separate & seemingly, inwardly and exclusively-focused groups of industry professionals – in of themselves, respectively speaking. But because electronic producers MUST become, by nature, “inter-disciplinaries of the technological sphere”: both as users and engineers in many relevant instances AND because electronic musicians are forced to constantly adapt to current tools and personally familiarize themselves with new developments as they are released, it is necessary to bring together a dual-analysis of the individuals themselves from within both the spheres Electronic Music and technological at our inaugural event.
Thus to demonstrate electronic music’s growth internationally and locally, its relevance to “the bigger picture”, and the current impact that technological development has had on the evolution of electronic music and the role that eminent technological innovation will play on the universal whole, we have thoughtfully selected prominent individuals who are considered the industry leaders, culture-formists & taste makers, master producers, technologists and journalists from each field of practice. We aim to bring them all-together, unifying them together under one, single roof, to not only discuss their thoughts and invigorate inter-group dialogue in an open forum, but to also to activate a sense of participatory communication between panelists and attendees. The conference will provide an invaluable opportunity for panelists to share their valuable insight and highly-qualified beliefs about the rapidly-developing trends and movements within the electronic music realm, with equally passionate electronic music enthusiasts/technologists who are in attendance.
SDMTCv.1 will be a chance for all attendees and conference participants to interact and exchange ideas, in a relaxing and nurturing environment advocating potential networking and future collaborations. Because the future of electronic music depends not only on its relationship with technology but also the forward-thinking, innovative, and enthusiastic individuals who will drive the evolution in a positive direction.
SDMTCv.1 Conference Schedule:
SDMTC has been organized with a series of informative panels consisting of 4-5 panelists who will discuss the topic as outlined by each of their respective panel descriptions and under the guided discussion format by designated moderators to facilitate the dialogue as needed.

Day Two: Naut Humon (San Francisco)
Panel Descriptions:
Panels have been thoughtfully constructed in order to convey those discussions and topics that are the most significant, and at times, most controversial in the respective realms of electronic music and technology.
Advancement in Audio Technology
-Sound Solutions-
Pioneers and industry leaders will talk about how speaker systems have shaped the way we can communicate, and discuss their individual perceptions of the future of audio technology. Factors such as perceived influential, relevance, and/or a potential impact on the global market will be discussed pertaining to particular products that offer a unique function unmatched by its predecessors and competition, that have demonstrated innovation in the field of audio technology.
Aesthetics, Visual Stage Pros, and Light Shows
-Visual Advancements-
Past conceptions of clearly defined boundaries between artistic sectors have, and continue to fluctuate since visually compelling aesthetics have become increasingly significant in the electronic music performance. Past criticism of electronic music lacking that theatrical engagement in live performances has resulted in the birth of visual concepts: Contributing not only new solutions for expressing music visually and symbolically, but also influencing live production. Have aesthetics and visual principles in performance determined the way music will be marketed, produced, and ultimately, sold?
Evolution of Devices & Software Applications; APIs (Quick Panel)
-The Future-
We sometimes find ourselves huddling altogether under a bus stop, or shoving our way through shopping malls to get lunch, engaging in discourse, revelations, and discussions without even exchanging a word. The evolution of devices and software applications have enabled us to “talk” without “talking,” to “meet” without having to see each other, and to “create” what we cannot tangibly “touch.” Also discussed will be the ability to repackage Information & Increase Usability. With the Internet’s nature of free information, how can we collect, harness, analyze, and produce information based off this? Panelists will include those leaders who have not only maintained but revolutionized web applications that are indispensable to today’s businesses and customers.
Evolution of Media Sharing Systems; Streaming & On-Demand Content
- Sharing vs. Ownership-
We send bits and shards of playback, flashes of memory, and snippets of our daily routine to strangers we will never meet. Illegal? We think not. The world becomes more connected as we become part of this global, border-less and timeless system. As problems continue to arise from infringing copy right laws to government advocated censorship, there is an urgency for new media sharing systems that will not only benefit the economy with less risk, but also provide more options for their users. It is also important to note the “The Resurrection of Radio” — Mediated music discovery, online mixing, and content in the cloud are now easily accessible by way of independent or “pirate” broadcasts. The important question to ask is what or who has instigated the resurgence of this perceivable “dead” communication medium?
Experimental Electronic Music & Instruments
-The Creation of Future Sounds and Transmission; Controllerism-
Welcome to Digital. The industries founded on producing, duplicating, and distributing music have endured the most significant revolution since we started recording sounds on vinyl. Now the digital age is redefining the art of live performance. Music software and systems created to control it are undeniably eclipsing interest in traditional instruments. Multi-touch displays, access to rapid prototyping tools, and advanced hardware/software integration are just a few of the new developments pulling music makers down this new rabbit hole. This panel takes the red pill.
Future of Mobile Utilization, Mobile Applications & Music
-Constraints Burdening Necessity & Solutions-
Cell-phones are the future of digital music – but how we can monetize streaming? Let the trailblazers share industry insights on the necessary developments needed to be made for portable devices to stay connected, the loopholes of downloading services, and the current & perceived progress with carriers and music companies. Also another focus that will be discussed is how has the new mobile application space transformed the way you carry, play, and perform on your mobile device. You used to have to lug crates and crates of vinyl, and now you can carry it all in your palm. Participants will inform and exchange ideas about latest innovations pertaining to mobile platforms, and the perceived impact or improvement of mobilizing function-ability.
Future of Music: Generation Y
-Music is now YOUR brand-
From radio to user-generated content, to the emergence of viral videos, back to catering the niches and the consumers, the way music has combined with the entertainment industry has never been more important to our generation than it is now. For both current or recognized members of industry and those new comers currently seeking participation, this important discussion tackles the future of music, issues of exclusivity, and examines ways in which members can work to successfully be accepted as a source.
Leveraging Social Media & Online Brand Identity (30-minute Quick Panel)
-Facebook, Soundcloud, what’s next?-
Boundless and omniscient marketing strategies are available to the masses in this panel examining effective ways of distribution and creative communication. Industry leaders using social media will take you through how sites are indispensable for artists’ to market their products when used effectively, and how significant online brand identity is combined with marketing campaigns. Become an innovator after listening to tried and true methods in using social media to your advantage in today’s society.
Music Blogging & Exclusive Coverage Hunting; Monetizing Alternate Revenue Sources
-Evolution in the Public Sphere-
As bloggers become the new gatekeepers and taste makers in an accessible media environment, a participatory form of a genuine music fan and industry leaders has emerged. But how do we regulate writers or deem them as authoritative sources? How do we come up with laws to preserve quality writing and unbiased marketing schemes to prevent traditional music marketers from corrupting the game in the future? Parallels with the business environment and record industry will be scrutinized as well as a discussion on potential models of music blogging that may push boundaries further. Another issue regarding music blogging is monetizing your passion. One needs to be able to convince their market and their clients that their product is both symbolic and worthy of market value, to drive and obtain a modest profit. This will serve to ensure established platforms are able to produce content regularly and even improve upon successful ideas as the field of electronic builds and progresses forward.
Remixes, Producing & the Law
-Creative Reconstruction & Controversy-
If no song is a complete “original” – then how can the law regulate copyright issues on mash-ups, remixes and licensing? Watch top lawyers within the industry and up-and-coming DJs deliberate on how remixes and covers play an integral part in inexpensive marketing campaigns, as well as ways of gaining revenue while staying on the tightrope and remaining legal.
Taste Makers & Culture Forming
-Construction of Popular Culture & Fandom-
How have certain individuals formulated their own participatory culture and gained support via alternative means? The evolution of underground music and technology has simultaneously seen the rapidly increasing formation of subcultures. These alternative sources of fandom have resulted in the construction of public opinion for growing trends becoming more relevant on the mainstream level.

Kord Taylor – Looptastic: Business Development at Syntropique (Seattle)
Kord Taylor has been a consultant for Syntropique since 2002. Syntropique is a marketing, media, sales and services company. It has provided consultation and/or content to companies within music, pro audio, software, advertising, computer and mobile industries. Taylor Doms – Founder/CEO; TheMixster.com (San Diego)
Taylor Doms is a San Diego-based journalist who over the years quickly grew tired of the overwhelming amount of over-saturated market-driven content and mediocre journalistic conduct in the local press, and personally sought to instigate change in the typical individual’s social lifestyle and to give recognition to constantly-over-looked, yet hard-working, and forward-thinking locals — that was long-overdue. Doms started her nightlife and culture website TheMixster.com in February 2010 — dedicated to “those who simply dread routine” and too, were tired of the usual business agendas associated with the local nightlife scene. The site focuses HEAVILY on electronic music, as well as local nightlife, dining, fashion, and culture, featuring locals and covering breaking news on the international level as well. Her endeavors have been recognized on both the local and national scale, from The Washington Post, 944 Magazine, and to the San Diego Union Tribune. Doms also works in collaboration with successful national music blog, TheMusicNinja.com, covering new electronic music releases and interviewing world-renowned names such as Wolfgang Gartner, Armin van Buuren, Chromeo, Rusko, Boys Noize and The Glitch Mob, just to name a few.
As SDMTC’s Music Director, Doms has also played a significant role in the organization of the first ever San Diego Electronic Music and Technology Conference. TheMixster.com is honored and proud to be an active partner in this outstanding process and this truly special event.

I must declare, even though seeking through hundreds of blogs every day, the actual theme on this web site differs (for all the proper reasons). Should you not mind me personally asking, what is the title of the style or perhaps wouldn’t it certainly be a particularly made matter? It is substantially far better compared to the styles I use for some regarding my personal blogs ;:)
Comment by Kenyon Dickson — November 30, 2010 @ 5:03 AM

I must say, even though examining via dozens and dozens of weblogs weekly, the concept of your weblog is distinguishable (for the appropriate motives). Should you not head me personally inquiring, exactly what is the brand of this style or perhaps would it not certainly be a particularly designed extramarital relationship? It’s far far better in comparison to styles I take advantage of for a few regarding my personal sites ;–)
