images via Treasure Island Festival Website

You’re San Fran bound for the weekend, and you’re ready to poke your head into every which crevice, eatery, and happening that the West Coast’s most urbane city has to offer. Why wouldn’t you be? Well fortunately, if you’re a die hard lover of all things dance music-minded and/or you have an affinity for potential mateys adorned in pirate guises, you most certainly picked the right weekend to be in the city. Treasure Island Festival, going down October 16th & 17th on San Francisco’s secretish island located in the middle of the bay and off of the famed Golden Gate Bridge, will play host to some of the world’s most renowned dance-music makers and shakers on the planet. And as always, the coordinators on deck will be bringing the best of the city’s eclectically bountiful offerings within reach of tens of thousands of TIFesters that will be on board for the weekend-long adventure as well. So delightfully convenient and refreshing really!

The aim: is to create an extraordinary, and unique festival experience that’s a world-away from any other show you’ve ever attended before.

There are many MANY reasons as to why Treasure Island Festival remains my personal, absolute FAVORITE festival experience. From thoughtfully scheduled line-ups, free luxury transportation, curious novelties, stellar video displays, to just the overall vibe of well-mannered enthusiasm for life and a genuine love for all things music-minded, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the adventure year after year. Not to mention the amazing line-up of artists this year that are scheduled to whisk you to a whole new euphoric levels.

The best part about TIFEST other than the fact they separate the talent by genre and into two separate days, is that single day tickets won’t cost you an arm and peg leg.

Because I am a devotee to the world of electronic dance music I’ve decided to give a more detailed look at several particular artists from the line-up performing on Day 1 at Treasure Island Festival, October 16th.

LCD Soundsystem

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

Founder of Death From Above Records and Plantain Studios, James Murphy is recognized by his fans as the influential pioneer of body-movin’ sounds and as their faithful leader on their aural journey into a secret world of hip-shake-worthy rock n’roll-minded jives.

With three successful releases under their belt, including this year’s release of “This is Happening” and even a few Grammy nominations as well, there is no doubt that LCD Soundsystem is still committed to producing downright, straight-up good dance music. Their feel-good grooves seep into the ears of the masses for all to get down to and gleefully enjoy.

LCD Soundsystem first gained attention with the release of their single, “Losing My Edge“. Described as “an eight-minute, laugh-out-loud funny dissection of cool over a dirty electronic beat” the single became an underground dance favorite,” which was later followed by a never-faltering array of boogie-minded tracks that continuously summoned Murphy’s classic salacious vibes and swell toe-tapping times.

LCD Soundsystem’s music is the absolute paradigm hipster Casino-synthesizer dance party sound. It’s hard to imagine how James Murphy’s funkster electro-bop sounds translate to any stage outside of ones inside seedy underground dives. Their, intentionally mind you, one-dimensional rhythms seem best fit inside your favorite live music hang, drinking PBRs with your other friends wearing non-prescription thick-framed eyeglasses, skinny jeans, and beanies on a warm and summery Saturday night. Needless to say, we will all soon find out, now won’t we?

Although yes, it is very exciting LCD Soundsystem is headlining this year’s Treasure Island Festival, however, to be perfectly honest I think I’d rather rock my PJs and watch Daft Punk play in my house any day. Just sayin’.

What better way to celebrate the pirate gathering than with a HOOKed in performance by deadmau5.

YES. MOAR DEADMAU5!!!!!

I am so beyond thrilled that deadmau5 is indeed playing at my very favorite festival of the year. And he will be performing his “HOOKED” set people, so TIFeststers: Get ready to have your minds fucking blown away.

The first time I ever saw deadmau5 “Hooked-IN” show was at Coachella, and I still get tingly brain bubbles just thinking about the very experience. I go back and watch the videos often, usually to torment those unfortunate others who missed the very fantastical spectacle. Definitely one of the top moments of 2010 for me personally! Eyes roll back to the back of my head with nostalgic cold shivers down my spine at the very memory…

I can personally guarantee you that this is an act you will certainly NOT want to nor should miss.

Miike Snow

Another act I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to see play several times this past year, and let it be on the record, that I have not personally witnessed a Miike Snow performance that fell below anything less than mesmerizing: Each and every show has been positively haunting and spine-tinglingly enchanting.

Miike Snow no doubt has an incredible set list — given their expert ability to churn out massively popular hooks track after track. Their infectiously awe-resonating sounds combined with their always engaging shows, that never fail to utilize thick clouds of fog, ever-so-appropriately, to give even more steam (no pun intended) to their already chilling sets and always memorable performances.

Die Antwoord

image via http://www.eastcoastcool.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/die-antwoord.jpg

The electronic world has been taken over by the pioneers of the ZEF domination. Out of the Zefside of South Africa the trio of potty-mouthed, dirty-minded bandits consisting of Ninja, Yo-landi Vi$$er, and somewhat mysterious character, DJ HI-TEK, arguably accomplish more during their swift live performances than some other artists do in their entire lifetime. As a personal front row witness to the momentous, mind-blowing 30 minute set Die Antwoord played at Coachella this past year, indisputably Die Antwoord presented hands down one of the most memorable shows of the entire festival — and permanently struck a cord in my membrane that I can only describe as the very real, relevant, and ever-so-infectious ZEF virus.

Die Antwoord’s new video for their track “Evil Boy” produced by the one and only Diplo, is well, very inappropriate for the workplace and grandmas house. But between you and me, it’s delightfully fitting to the Die Antwoord Enter the Ninjavision we all know and love. However, there is certainly no lack of penis in this most recent audio/visual release. Or mice.

I can’t wait to see Die Antwoord light up the stage, the proceed to smoke it.

Set begins at 3:00pm sharp. DON’T miss it.

Kruder & Dorfmeister

photo via yeahdevelop.wordpress.com

Out of Austria the duo consisting of members Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, Kruder & Dorfmeister have been making music for nearly two decades, and are known for their very downtempo-dub stylings and sultry ambient grooves. Their sound stroke your sensory system – with deep, impeccably mastered vocals, melodic reverberating echoes, teases of trip-hop enhances, and a smooth and reliable dub heavy bassline to round out the genius of their unique sound.

Their recording studio in Vienna, G Stone Recordings, has nurtured and housed the production of the greater majority of the duo’s tracks and internationally acclaimed remixes, along with a slew of others such as Stereotyp, DJ DSL, Rodney Hunter, Urbs, Makossa & Megablast, and Sugar B./Dub Club.

Although the primary source of their notoriety still remains to be in Europe for Kruder & Dorfmeister’s acclaimed live DJ performances and album drops, the bulk of their presence on the international consciousness exists primarily in connection to their remix works, including Madonna‘s “Nothing Really Matters,” Depeche Mode‘s “Useless,” Count Basic‘s “Speechless” and Roni Size‘s “Heroes”. Their highly-anticipated live performance at Treasure Island Festival this weekend will no doubt finally be our long-awaited opportunity to have an eye and ear into the insight, stage presence, and sound that’s been tucked away in the depths of Europe — an experience we are finally ready to pursue after all these long years later. I feel something special brewing here, I would sincerely suggest catching this act.

Pronounced in the human language as “Chk Chk Chk” the members decided to go with the unconventional unpronounceable name !!! to express their overall excitement about music and life; and to make things really complicated for their fans. Either way, !!! or Chk Chk Chk, fans have nonetheless made ado and have  continued to vocalize their support for the group’s positively jiggy state-of-mind and their never-ending desire to “shake things up”.

Their beginnings as a punk band and their current style and need to make more boogie-minded tracks that channel that dancefloor feel-goodness clash; and what’s made sense of out of the mess is a sound that is both funky and jivey. And pretty damn fun.

Although their six track EP, Jamie, My intentions Are BASS won’t be out until after the festival, due out on October 25th in the States, it has been said their live performance absolutely rivals anything they’ve put out previously in their studio sessions. So be sure to catch their set at Treasure Island Festival on Saturday at 4:35pm on the dot!!!

Friday, October 15th South Africa’s most zef import in probably, well, ever, Die Antwoord will be touching down at The Independent strapped with absolutely filthy thoughts and equally deranged and dirty beats to torch the dark sonic underbelly of the club and penetrate their nasty slants into the ripe minds of the crowd. Prepping the aural crevices for Die Antwoord will be Vin Sol. Unfortunately, yet unsurprisingly, the show is already sold out however, where there’s a will, there’s always a way. Have at it smooth talking socialites. More info here.

Saturday, October 16th, Rogue Wave, along with with The Mumlers, will be taking down The Independent on the last and final night of the official Treasure Island happenings.
