If you’ve never been to San Francisco’s Treasure Island Festival before, it’s definitely one of those experiences that will make you scratch your head at other festivals in the future and think “now why in HELL did they decide to do THAT?!” Treasure Island Festival is like the dream experience for true MUSIC-LOVING connoisseurs who have an appreciation for excellent design and thorough organization. It’s not a RAVE.
TREASURE ISLAND FESTIVAL (TIMF) is a picturesque pirate-themed gathering that is made-up of simply two stages – curiously within just yards of each others, with STAGGERED set times (so you never miss an act) and FREE limo-bus transportation to and from the festival grounds from the city. How often does a festival provide FREE transportation?! The answer is “NEVER” followed by a pretentious laugh.
The greatest thing about TIMF however is the fact that it’s the prime place for new music DISCOVERY. The line-up is always very well curated with an expert eye for sonically-inclined diversity and a unique foresight for future “IT” factor break-out artists, along with awe-evoking headliners.
This year’s day one headliners include EMPIRE OF THE SUN, CUT COPY, DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979, CHROMEO, and DIZZEE RASCAL.
The fact alone that Dizzee Rascal will be there is enough for me to pull the trigger and go! Last time I saw Dizzee Rascal perform live I was sitting on top of a sound shed four-stories high inside of a black tent they called “The Boiler Room” (since sweat dropped like icky raindrops from the ceiling) at a festival in New Zealand five years ago. And needless to say that show was INCREDIBLY sweaty and fucking amazing.
Now keep in mind, I’ve been to TIMF several years in a row now, and still I have yet to even consider going on the second day. I’m just simply not an “indie” person. However, the first day, the “EDM-themed” day of the two-day festival is what I have been affectionately referring to — it’s that incredible one-half of TIMF that I couldn’t recommend more.
The server for Treasure Island Festival’s site has crashed so you can’t access it today, however head over to their Facebook page for more info or wait a day to hit up the official site and swoop up their early birds ASAP.
