Tres Terrifique – Urban Art Weekend Guide

Tres Terrifique - Urban Art Weekend Guide

How will you impress your friends on Monday? What will you tell them you did? How will they know, as I do, that you are a culturally enlightened being who knows what’s what and who’s who in the San Diego art community? Going to any (or all) of these three events this weekend is a good start.

1. Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair | Hilton Bayfront | September 2–5

2. APASD Presents: Plastic Fantastic | Subtext Gallery in Little Italy | September 3, 6–10pm

3. Current: An Exhibition of Hand Crafted Design Presented by Set & Drift | The Bakery in Barrio Logan | September 2–5

Get all the juicy details after the jump!

1. Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair | Hilton Bayfront | September 2–5

40 mostly local contemporary galleries, solo as well as collaborative artists, will show their stuff in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront this weekend. Sunny day, fancypants location, art and wine, with booths set up for your viewing pleasure today through Sunday. Notably check out Mark Murphy in booth B10 for work by Cathie Bleck and Mark Todd with original art created exclusively for the event. It’s a great way to get a taste of some of the biggest and brightest galleries and artists in the area (and beyond) all in one place. A double espresso shot of contemporary art. Do it. Tickets available here.

2. APASD Presents: Plastic Fantastic | Subtext Gallery in Little Italy | September 3, 6–10pm

This Friday, a ONE NIGHT ONLY exhibition put on by APASD showcases the crème de la crème of their Plastic Fantastic Call For Entries earlier this year. 30 photos, to be exact, taken by a wide range of San Diego artists with one common thread – they were all captured with the use of only plastic film cameras. The photos are raw, notably undigital-ified, sometimes blurry, and abounding in awesome. Images will be auctioned to benefit the AJA Project. Sounds pretty f-ing fantastic to me! Beer and music provided: Pocket in the courtyard at 9pm.

3. Current: An Exhibition of Hand Crafted Design Presented by Set & Drift | The Bakery in Barrio Logan | September 2–5

The workshop at The Bakery has undergone a temporary transformation in the name of hosting renowned designer Kwangho Lee’s Black Whale, a sculptural lighting installation knitted with power cords, along with Mercantile, a pop-up shop showcasing furniture pieces, prints, and hand-stitched textiles by 9 American designers and artists. Check out their handywork and be inspired. Artists include: Miki Iwasaki, Josh Higgins, Neko Burke, Gabriel Salcedo, Casie Lurie, Philipp Bosshart, Luxury Death Machine and Cloven Hoof.
