Whooooaaaaaaaa Dirty Bird definitely made a HUGE and very impressive presence at Voyeur on Thursday, October 28th. Minimalism reigned king when Justin Martin of San Fran’s clucktastic fantastic tech house cult by the name of Dirty Bird Records took the decks at Voyeur. I know, I know. The night was meant to be a celebration for Harvard Bass – being knighted into the highly regarded kingdom that is Voyeur — as the goth LED lit haven’s newest resident DJ. However, I think it’s important we all just take a second and step back, and take a look at this damn fine fellow Justin Martin. The man, JM, absolutely slashed and murdered the dance floor, with sleek as freshly sharpened steel beats and deep cutting grooves.
My favorite videos and some tunes from the night are after the jump so be kind, click the “more” & have a look please.
A member from within Martin’s own inner circle asked if I had seen him live before and when I responded that sadly I hadn’t, he simply replied “It will change your life.” Dramatic maybe, although still quite the persuasive argument, it was however, those not so subtle hints from my very own trusted circle of local taste makers who saw Martin’s performance two weeks ago at Ruby Room, who quietly claimed Justin Martin was indeed of high musical caliber, that had me 100% convinced that this was not the show to miss.
The dance floor was PACKED and anxious to see Justin Martin take the stage and finally when it seemed the crowd was getting slightly restless, Martin took over. Now, I frequent Voyeur QUITE a bit, more than I’d like to admit to any of you here. Being a Voyeur veteran 8239574986 times over, or so, I do have some sort of justifiable position to state: Justin Martin’s music isn’t quite your typical array of sonic palatables that the Voyeur crowds feverishly flock and engage in naughty dance floor activity to. Deeply melodic and slowly building synths, and reverberating bass-laden layers, along a steady yet powerful stream of percussion, although ever-so-aurally luscious to some, minimal/tech house doesn’t typically spark the raver LED-laced fire inside the kids these days here in San Diego. However, last night – all of that changed. And I’m just not sure if Voyeur crowds will ever be the same. It might be too early to tell, but I think San Diego too, has caught the Bird.
Atmospheric grooves featuring aurally-intriguing and airy percussion lines, intermingling haunting and captivating vocals, caused the crowds to “Woop!” in perfect unison when Justin Martin dropped his newest single “Mr. Spock“. Which I am led to believe was all part of his master plan…
In all seriousness, it was time for the Percolator. One of the Dirty Bird variety. And it came to San Diego in the form of Justin Martin.
Justin Martin, please come back to San Diego again soon. And bring the other Dirty Birds along with you too please, we’d quite like that as well thank you. Because as you can see, we’re hooked.
